Playing Programmer 2012: CBS

It's the time of the year when the US Broadcast network announce renewals and cancellations along with the new series they will pick up for next season. Next week is what they call the UpFronts which is like the equivalent of the trade shows our local networks do here. It's the time where each network showcases their schedule for the upcoming TV season. Like last year, I will play programmer and try to schedule the networks programming next season.

Link
The CW? Done! FOX Done! NBC? Done? ABC? Done!

And so for the finale of my Playing Programmer 2012 blog series (haha!), I will now focus with the very stable CBS, America's most viewed network in primetime. The network renewed around 20 shows and picked up 6 new series for this season. I don't see much changes for the network this season apart from plugging holes for cancelled series. Anyway, here's my schedule for CBS:

Sundays

7 PM - 60 Minutes
8 PM - The Amazing Race
9 PM - Vegas
10 PM - The Good Wife

Sunday a weak night for CBS with only The Amazing Race bringing in solid ratings so I can see them launching their high profile Western drama Vegas starring Dennis Quaid, Michael Chicklis and Carrie Ann Moss at the 9 PM slot. The Good Wife's ratings are poor for CBS but they likely renewed the show because of the prestige it brings, I can see CBS moving The Good Wife one hour later to 10 PM where it will do the least damage in the ratings

Mondays

8 PM - How I Met Your Mother
8: 30 PM - 2 Broke Girls
9 PM - Two and a Half Men
9:30 PM - Mike & Molly
10 PM - Hawaii Five-0

Yes, I didn't change a thing in this schedule, it works well for them and CBS wants stability so I don't see them making drastic changes for whatever works for them.

Tuesdays

8 PM - NCIS
9 PM - NCIS: LA
10 PM - Made in Jersey

The 10 pm slot has been tough for CBS but I think they well try again to have female-led drama show at 10 PM and that would be Made in Jersey

Wednesdays

8 PM - Survivor: Philippines*
9 PM - Criminal Minds
10 PM - CSI

*not to be confused with the local version Survivor Philippines with no ":" in between.

Like Monday a very solid night for CBS. I don't see them changing it as well

Thursdays

8 PM - The Big Bang Theory
8:30 PM - Friend Me
9 PM - Person of Interest
10 PM - Elementary

A lot of people are predicting CBS will make a 2 hour sitcom block while I would advocate that before The Big Bang Theory did excellent the past season on the same timeslot and while it would definitely get highe ratings at 9 PM, I think CBS will stick with the same schedule since they tend to nurture their procedural and Person of Interest did increase its ratings during the latter half of the season which shows potential for growth (NCIS and Criminal Minds had been on the same timeslot since they premiered and they started with modest ratings and grew to become ratings powerhouses so POI could be another long term hit for CBS). They will likely launch a new sitcom here since TBBT is strong and they picked two sitcoms and Friend Me seems more compatible with TBBT. CBS modernized version of Sherlock Holmes Elementary is a buzzed project and will likely get the Thursday 10 PM slot.

Fridays

8 PM Rules of Engagement
8:30 PM - Partners
9 PM - The Mentalist
10 PM - Blue Bloods

CBS used to rule Fridays but their ratings power over that night started to lose their power there so I see them making some changes here and reserve Undercover Boss and CSI: New York for midseason and try something new by having sitcoms at 8-9 PM and The Mentalist moving to 9 PM.

Tomorrow, I'll share my thoughts on the released official schedules so far :)

Playing Programmer 2012: ABC

It's the time of the year when the US Broadcast network announce renewals and cancellations along with the new series they will pick up for next season. Next week is what they call the UpFronts which is like the equivalent of the trade shows our local networks do here. It's the time where each network showcases their schedule for the upcoming TV season. Like last year, I will play programmer and try to schedule the networks programming next season.

I'm already done with The CW, FOX and NBC so it's now time for my "schedule" for my favorite Broadcast network, ABC. Last year, I did well by correctly predicting my gutsy Sunday line up composing of 8 new show Once Upon a Time (8 PM), Desperate Housewives (9 PM) and Pan Am (10 PM) , let's see if I could make another shot here :D

Sundays

7 PM - America's Funniest Home Videos
8 PM - Once Upon a Time
9 PM - Nashville
10 PM - 666 Park Avenue

Once Upon a Time is a hit and I don't see why ABC should change the timeslot as the show is the perfect 8 PM show. With Desperate Housewives gone and the failures of Pan AM and GCB it will leave ABC with two holes in the schedule. ABC's most buzzed pilot is drama about counry music Nashville so I will give it the DH slot since I could see a good viewers flow with family friendly OUAT and while I think it's risky to launch two new shows back to back I thinkABC should take a chance and have the promising supernatural drama 666 Park Avenue on the 10 pm slot. It would be a departure from their usual soaps at 10 PM but there's always room for change right?

Mondays

8-10 PM - Dancing with The Stars
10 PM - Castle

I thought that this might be the time to finally move Castle but with a fall edition of The Voice coming in challenging DWTS yet again plus a promising new drama Revolution at 10 PM, ABC will likely play it safe with their schedule and keep Castle in the same slot

Tuesdays

8 PM - Last Man Standing
8:30 PM - Malibu Country
9 PM - Dancing with The Stars Results
10 PM - Private Practice

Last Man Standing started well then the last five episodes hit lows week to week but I think it will grow and maybe pick up some new audience when summer reruns air and there's no other fitting companion for LMS than Reba McEntire's new sitcom Malibu country. Private Practice proved it can be on its own when it held up well after DWTS this spring so might as well not change it.

Wednesdays

8 PM - The Middle
8:30 PM - Suburgatory
9 PM - Modern Family
9:30 PM - How To Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life
10 PM - Revenge

As much as I both like Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B--- in Apartment 23, their ratings while solid, are not maximizing the ratings of Modern Family so I think ABC will use the 9:30 pm slot to launch a new show yet again and I think How To Live with Your Parents might be a good fit to MF since it's a family centric show. I was tempted to move Revenge on Sundays to fill the soap void left by Desperate Housewives but the show is basically an average performer and it solved the Wednesday 10 PM problem they had for so long so why move this show, right?

Thursdays

8 PM - The Last Resort
9 PM - Grey's Anatomy
10 PM - Scandal

The 8 PM block has been a problem for ABC now and I think they will slot one of their most anticipated shows with the Shawn Ryan-produced drama The Last Resort. It's male appealing but ABC successfully launched FlashForward here four years ago (it ultimately flopped by midseason but the show had creative problems that may have been the reason it lost a lot of its premiere audience but I don't think that's enough reason for ABC to be scared of launching another one on this slot.) Scandal is still relatively new and should stay on the same slot after Grey's Anatomy.

Fridays

8 PM - Shark Tank
9 PM - Neighbors
9:30 PM - Family Tools
10 PM - 20 / 20

Shark Tank did well this season and with ABC ordering a full season this time around there's no doubt that it will be back on the same slot. With the relative strength of Shark Tank I think ABC will try to air scripted program at 9 PM. I read people are suggesting a Last Man Standing-Malibu Country line up here because they "cheap" since they are multi-camera sitcom but I don't think ABC will do that (I don't think the paychecks of Tim Allen and Reba McEntire are cheap) because they are trying to build their Tuesday comedy block. I was torned between the Modern Family castoffs block of Happy Endings-Apartment 23 or a freshmen block of Neighbors-Family Tools but I ultimately went for the latter since those shows have no big stars on it and might not be expensive to produce so it won't be a big risk to launch them on low-viewed night Friday.

Midseason: Body of Proof, Red Widow, Mistresses, Zero Hour, Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B--- in Apartment 23

Body of Proof will likely wait for the spring edition of DWTS to return (Private Practice is expected to end this season). Mistresses is developed for summer programming but could be moved up to spring just like Missing this year. Red Widow and Zero Hour feels like midseason shows and the Modern Family castoffs block of Happy Endings-Apartment 23 could come in after DWTS ends this fall for a four-sitcom comedy block on Tuesdays.

Playing Programmer 2012: NBC

It's the time of the year when the US Broadcast network announce renewals and cancellations along with the new series they will pick up for next season. Next week is what they call the UpFronts which is like the equivalent of the trade shows our local networks do here. It's the time where each network showcases their schedule for the upcoming TV season. Like last year, I will play programmer and try to schedule the networks programming next season.

After FOX and The CW, not it's time for me to share what I think NBC's schedule should be. This network has a lot of problems with every scripted show struggling in the ratings this season. However, they have one saving grace which is The Voice which got strong ratings in midseason and even defeating Idol earlier (however the show slipped in the ratings as the season progresses and American Idol beat it for the rest of the season). So even if NBC is risking of overexposing The Voice by having a fall edition it's understandable that they will have because they need it to launch new shows.

Sundays

Football

Mondays

8-10 PM: The Voice
10 PM: The Revolution

The Voice should provide lead in to their most potential new show The Revolution from JJ Abrams. Smash should be kept for midseason for the spring edition of The Voice.

Tuesdays

8 PM - The Biggest Loser
9 PM - The Voice Results
10 PM - infamous

Slicing The Biggest Loser to one hour works and The Voice Results does well for them and will provide a good lead in to soap-ish new show Infamous which could be a good fit to The Voice.

Wednesdays

8 PM - Whitney
8:30 PM - Up All Night
9 PM - Law & Order: SVU
10 PM - Chicago Fire

Despite critical backash, Whitney actually did decently on Wednesdays and I think they should keep it on the same slot and pair it with Up All Night who actually did fine in the fall when it was on Wednesday but when it moved to the post-Office slot it did poorly. SVU is now weaker but its their best option for the 9 PM and could provide a solid lead in for the new show Chicago Fire.

Thursdays

8 PM - Parks and Recreation
8:30 - Go On
9 PM - The Office
9:30 PM - 1600 PENN
10 PM - Parenthood

Parks and Office ratings are not that great anymore but they were still the best performers from the current Thursday block so I'll keep them here and launch two new promising sitcom Matthew Perry's Go On and the White House family sitcom 16000 PENN. I'm moving Parenthood here since ABC has failed to launch new series on this slot since E.R ended so might as well give it to a veteran with a decent audience.

Fridays

8 PM - Community
8:30 PM - 30 Rock
9 PM - Grimm
10 PM - Dateline

Community and 30 Rock suffered big ratings loss last season and both shows have a passionate following. Feels like Community was renewed for more episodes on syndication so might as well give it to Fridays with low ratings expectations and 30 Rock is on its final season so might well put it to pasture on this night

Midseason: Smash, Off The Rockers, Animal Practice, Guys with Kids, Do Not Harm, Next Caller, Hannibal

NBC has a bunch of new shows so obviously they're going for midseason. I'll leave relative acceptable ratings performers Smash and Off The Rockers for midseason as back up shows.

Playing Programmer 2012: Fox

It's the time of the year when the US Broadcast network announce renewals and cancellations along with the new series they will pick up for next season. Next week is what they call the UpFronts which is like the equivalent of the trade shows our local networks do here. It's the time where each network showcases their schedule for the upcoming TV season. Like last year, I will play programmer and try to schedule the networks programming next season.

Earlier I did my "suggested" schedule for The CW and now I will dish out my scheduling thoughts for FOX. The network is still #1 on the overall average for the advertisers demo of 18-49 however the network struggled this season with all its scripted shows hitting lows and American Idol although still strong suffered its biggest rating decline yet. It should be noted as well that they don't program the 10 pm hour unlike ABC, CBS and NBC so they have an advantage there. And that's also makes easy for me to schedule them :)

Sunday

7 PM - Football
8 PM - The Simpsons
8:30 PM - Bob's Burgers/The Cleveland Show
9 PM - Family Guy
9:30 PM - American Dad

No new animated series in development so far for FOX so the schedule will likely be the same. I just don't know which between Bob's Burgers and Cleveland Show will take the 8:30 PM slot.

Monday

8 PM - Bones
9 PM - Mob Doctor

Bones is a reliable performer and will keep FOX Mondays stable with House exiting this season. This should also help the launch of the new series Mob Doctor (which I hope gets a better title before it premieres).

Tuesday

8 PM - Raising Hope
8:30 PM - Ben & Kate
9 PM - New Girl
9:30 PM - It's Messy

Fox tried a 2-hour sitcom block but it failed but I think they're going to try again this fall now that they have two promising new sitcoms that are compatible with Raising Hope and New Girl . What happens to Glee? I'll deal with it later ;)

Wednesday

8-10 PM - The X Factor

The X Factor was considered a disappointment during its first season since it didn't had the buzz and ratings American Idol had but lofty expectations aside, The X Factor was a hit and gave FOX three solid hours of great acting which helped them keep the crown as the top-rated network in 18-49 especially how FOX struggled in the spring. So without a doubt, X Factor stays on the same slot.

Thursday

8 PM - X Factor
9 PM - Glee

Glee has suffered ratings and buzz loss on its third season but still the ratings are still solid but I think if Fox wants to protect this show they'll move it here with a fairly solid lead from The X Factor. Plus they could also start the season later after FOX coverage of baseball is done wherein Two hours of X Factor can be used before Glee premieres.

Friday

8 PM - Touch
9 PM - Fringe

Touch got a renewal despite poor ratings behind American Idol and I guess they only renewed it to "save face" since all other shows that they launched floundered plus it has top notch talent Kiefer Sutherland involved. But with having the best lead in possible already and I don't see Touch going to grow anymore so it's possible that FOX relocates it to Friday where they usually put their shows that aren't strong anymore to pasture. On the positive side, this could be a utility player as well if a new show flops horribly. Fringe stays on the same slot for their final season.

Midseason: The Following, Goodwin Games, Kitchen Nightmares

The Following stars Kevin Bacon and is reported that he only agreed to work for just 15 episodes. So an uninterrupted midseason run for this is the best option for success. Goodwin Games is a sitcom that could replace any show that flops in the Tuesday block or maybe used after The X Factor. Kitchen Nightmares is a reliable Friday show that could replace Fringe once its done.

Playing Programmer 2012: The CW

It's the time of the year when the US Broadcast network announce renewals and cancellations along with the new series they will pick up for next season. Next week is what they call the UpFronts which is like the equivalent of the trade shows our local networks do here. It's the time where each network showcases their schedule for the upcoming TV season. Like last year, I will play programmer and try to schedule the networks programming next season. First up is the CW which cancelled two freshman series The Secret Circle and Ringer and renewed everything else plus they picked up 5 new series. This mini-network badly needs a makeover next season as it suffered an all time low in the ratings with only one show they could call a hit (The Vampire Diaries). Here's my schedule, new shows are italicized:

CW

Monday

8 PM - Beauty and the Beast
9 PM – Hart of Dixie

Hart of Dixie got a surprise renewal and probably one of the factors that it was renewed that it was actually building up from Gossip Girl this season which suffered its lowest ratings to date. I say that the CW should keep Dixie on the same slot and try out one of their promising pilots at 8 PM. The modern take of the beloved fairy tale has a recognizable TV star on the lead role (Smallville's Kristin Kreuk) and I could see this show appealing to a larger audience and given that it has an established brand already this could be strong enough to lead a night.

Tuesday

8 PM - 90210
9 PM – First Cut

90210 is CW's third highest rated and the show has been shuffling schedules for its entire run and for the previous season it did a solid by CW standard ratings on this timeslot so CW should keep as it is and pair it with their young-skewed medical drama First Cut which feels like a junior version of Grey's Anatomy. I honestly didn't thought that CW would pick this over The Selection (a pilot which has similarities with The Hunger Games in premise) since it doesn't sound that it will be a strong sell for the network but since they picked it up, the pilot must have been good. This is the best slot this show could have with a veteran show support as lead in and not much brutal competition on other networks. And you know it just needs to improve from the disastrous ratings of previous timeslot occupant Ringer to survive. I have a feeling that this show could have the 'Old school WB show" vibe that has been missing since the old network merged with UPN to form CW. This could probably surprise us.

Wednesday

8 PM – America’s Next Top Model
9 PM – The Carrie Diaries

America's Next Top Model bled a lot of viewers this season despite having All Star and British invasion twists for its two cycles but I heard there's going to be a major revamp on the show next season and that change could generate interest from old fans to check this out again so I'm leaving it on the same timeslot. The Carrie Diaries is a prequel to the HBO classic Sex and the City so the show has an established fan base already and I think it will complement ANTM as they might appeal to the same type of audience so pairing it up is a viable option for the network.

Thursday

8 PM – The Vampire Diaries
9 PM – Arrow

The Vampire Diaries is by far CW's top show so it's absolutely staying on the same slot. CW last year tried to pair the show with The Secret Circle and on paper it would have been a match made in heaven but alas it didn't work and the latter got cancelled. So I thought the CW should just stop thinking of a show that has a similar vibe with TVD and slot a show that has a completey different audience but had a brand and pre-existing fanbase already and that is Arrow is an adaptation of the DC Comics character Green Arrow. The two shows definitely don't go together but since Arrow is CW's biggest bet this season might as well give it the security of a prime slot paired with the strongest show CW has. And as I've mentioned earlier, Arrow has an estbalished brand already and could viewers on its own so this could potentially be a strong night for the CW. And if Arrow does well they could move it to a new timeslot by midseason and give the post-TVD slot to another show.

Friday

8 PM – Nikita
9 PM – Supernatural

I was surprised CW renewed Nikita despite low ratings but looks like it's working for them and Supernatural is CW's #2 show despite being on low-rated Friday night so I don't see them changing the schedule next season. I thought of moving Supernatural to a new night to help out the other new shows but CW does not have anything to support their Friday night so might as well leave it as it is and focus on the other nights which has more available viewers.

Midseason: Gossip Girl, Cult

Gossip Girl received an 11-episode final season pick up and just like One Tree Hill's final season they should be aired during midseason when other CW shows are in repeats. Cult has a lot of potential but since it will like it will be heavily serialized, an uninterrupted midseason run is the show's best shot.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: May 19, 2012)

Not much changes on this week's Billboard Hot 100 as Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye feat Kimbra lead the Hot 100 for a 4th consecutive week. The entire top 10 is basically unchanged for the last 3 weeks.

This week's top debut comes from an unlikely collaboration of B.o.B and Taylor Swift with Both of Us debuting at #18. On the other hand, making a big leap is Rihanna's latest single Where Have You Been which zooms #78-#28 this week. Lastly, LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem holds on for another week on the chart to extend its run to 59 weeks, the longest staying song on the chart.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

A Woman's Word Week #7 Plug

Let me share the very first plug I wrote and produced for TeleNovela Channel! It's the Week #7 plug for A Woman's Word (Palabra de Mujer). Check it out!

A Woman's Word airs 2 am, 8 am, 2 pm and 8 pm weekdays and catch the weekend marathon every Sunday.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: May 12 2012)

Somebody That I Used to Know continues to conquer the Billboard Hot 100 as the song spends a third week atop the Billboard Hot 100. The song from Gotye (featuring Kimbra) also makes history as the first song to sell 3 consecutive weeks above 400k. It sold 414K copies this week, 463K last week and 542K two weeks ago. The song also tops the On-Demand chart (subscription-based online streaming) and is closing the gap with fun.'s We Are Young on the airplay chart. Somebody That I Used to Know and We Are Young will likely battle it out for the Billboard Year-end chart #1 later this year. Which song will get it? Let's wait and see, 2012 is far from over :)

Joining the top 5 this week is Carly Rae Jepsen with her debut single Call Me Maybe climbing #7-#5. Jepsen is actually older than me (26) but her song is without a doubt a teen bubbglegum pop song that surprisingly top various charts all over the world. Can it top the US chart as well?

This week's top debut comes from Wiz Khalifa as Work Hard, Die Hard debuts at #17. Meanwhile, the biggest jumper this week is Pitbull's Back in Time which leaps #65 to #48 this week. The song is from the soundtrack of the upcoming Men In Black 3.

Longest chart sitter Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO extends its chart life to 58 weeks as the song climbs #43-#41. Meanwhile, 45-week old single Moves Like Jagger by Maroon Five feat Christina Aguilera is on its way out and be a recurrent as the song drops #44-#47 this week.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Philippine Box Office Roundup 11

Here's the 11th edition of my Philippine Box Office Roundup and you can read my previous recap here. And as always here are some notes with regards to my box office roundup:
  • The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
  • Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.
***

As expected, The Avengers dominated the Philippine Box Office and setting record breaking numbers! The movie easily topped the year to date rankings and is ahead of the #2 movie by over 100 million pesos! MASSIVE!

Here are some of the records set by the movie:
  • Biggest Wednesday Ever: P56.6-M, beating “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s” P55.4-M.
  • Biggest Thursday Ever: P44.1M, smashing “Spider-man 3’s P28.4-M
  • Biggest Friday Ever: P45.3-M, outgrossing “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1’s” P44.1-M.
  • Biggest Saturday Ever: P66.4-M, breaking “Transformers: Dark of the Moon’s” P60.8-M.
  • Biggest Sunday Ever: P68.5M, outlasting “Transformers: Dark of the Moon’s” P60.8M. Sunday’s receipts for “The Avengers” also now holds the distinction of the all-time biggest single-day gross in the country.
Elsewhere on the chart, Wrath of the Titans moves ahead of The Hunger Games for the #3 while Battleship overtakes Underworld: Awakening for the 5th spot.

Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at the BoxOffice.com forums:

Up

So today (ironically in a way since it's Labor's Day) I begin my "new job" at the office. Yeah, I'm still in the same company but I have a "promotion" of some sorts. It's in quote because it's not official and things are under probation but essentially I got an "upgrade" from the job because I will no longer write dubbing scripts as I'm now a segment producer. I will produce plugs and promotional materials for TeleNovela Channel. Aside from producing plugs, I will also do quality checking of the materials that will air on the channel. Truth be told, I got this "promotion" because two people resigned so it's a de-facto promotion haha. And I have no salary increase whatsoever which sucks but well manager told me when i do a good job maybe I could get one. Let's see. It's a tougher job than my previous one because well the stakes are higher and the responsibilities are bigger. I was hesitant to pursue this actually but you know I just thought that I'm not getting any younger anymore and I've been with the company for almost 3 years so it's time for me to stay out of my comfort zone and try out something new. I may not have a salary hike (for now I hope) but it's a good opportunity to expand my horizons. Plus I get paid to watch TV, that's awesome!

You know what I thought of leaving the job several weeks ago as an opportunity to move to a new place seems feasible but it didn't work out in the end and I was really upset as I wanted to get that job. But in a way, maybe it was all in God's plan. It's not time for me to leave my current company because I still have things to learn. Anyway, this new opportunity and definitely a blessing. It will be tough but I will do my best. :)
