Iron Man 3 Breaks Philippine Box Office Records

Tony Stark singlehandedly broke all existing box-office records in the Philippines, as Marvel's Iron Man 3 grossed a monumental P305.96-million in five days – the biggest opening weekend EVER and the fastest time to reach the P300-M mark in local history!
This was announced today by Victor R. Cabrera, Managing Director of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines, which distributed the film.

We are elated and proud of this remarkable achievement,” said Cabrera. “Marvel has crafted a spectacular film and this just adds to Disney and Marvel’s commitment in keeping the property evergreen. You see Marvel and Iron Man everywhere, in movie theatres, on TV, malls, in retail, publishing, etc. You see people in Iron Man t-shirts, kids playing with Iron Man toys. Filipinos are just true Iron Man fans. We cannot be happier with the way the Filipino consumer is embracing the movie and the property.”
“Iron Man 3” opened across the country April 24 with a stunning P62.9-M which obliterated two box-office records – the highest opening day ever (beating 2007's “Spider-Man 3”) and all-time most successful Wednesday (surpassing “Marvel's The Avengers”).

From then on, the film never looked back – smashing single-day records one after another, specifically, biggest Thursday (P48-M), Friday (P48.41-M), Saturday (P71.94-M) and Sunday (P74.63-M). All previous records were established last year by “Marvel's The Avengers.”

Disney rolled out “Iron Man 3” in more than 500 cinemas throughout the archipelago and in 3D, 2D, IMAX 3D and 35mm formats. Getting the lion's share of gross receipts was SM Mall of Asia (P19.56-M), followed by SM North EDSA (P17.69-M) and Trinoma (P13.11-M). Not to be outdone are SM Megamall (P12.58-M), Glorietta 4 (P9.11-M), SM Southmall (P7.85-M), Newport (P6.35-M), SM Fairview (P6.29-M), Eastwood (P5.99-M) and Power Plant (P5.82-M). Also posting impressive receipts are Alabang Town Center (P5.81-M), Greenbelt 3 (P5.73-M), SM Clark (P5.30-M), Market! Market! (P5.10-M), Gateway (P4.89-M), SM Marikina (P4.28-M), Shang Cineplex (P4.20-M), Robinsons Ermita (P4.156-M), SM San Lazaro (P4.154-M) and Robinsons Galleria (P4.02-M).

"IRON MAN 3" Grosses P62.6M on Opening Day, Breaks All-time Record

MANILA, April 25 – Tony Stark rewrote the record books, as Marvel's “Iron Man 3” debuted yesterday to a stunning P62.6-million – the biggest first-day gross ever in Philippine history, foreign or local film.

This was announced today by Victor R. Cabrera, Managing Director of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines, which distributed the movie.

“`Iron Man 3' flew off the box office chart, soaring past the stratosphere to break the country's all-industry, all-time Opening Day records,” said Cabrera. “P62-M in one day is previously unheard of. What a boost to the industry!”

The third “Iron Man” installment surpassed the opening day record of “Spider-Man 3” at P58-million which was achieved on a May 1 Labor Day holiday back in 2007.

“Iron Man 3” now also owns the biggest Wednesday gross ever in history, the biggest Marvel/Disney opening day ever, beating “Marvel's The Avenger's” record of P56-M last year.

To put this further in perspective, the opening day gross of “Iron Man 3” is double that of “Iron Man 2.”

Philippine Box Office Recap 39

It's been almost a month since I last updated this list but well it was only until this week that Box Office Mojo updated the Philippine Box Office chart. The last recap is located here. Anyway, for this recap I will list the Top 40 grossing 2012 movies in the Philippine Box Office. I will just use the local currency and not in dollars because or ranking discrepancy because of Peso-Dollar exchange changes so might as well stick with the local data. Also, The Hobbit's numbers are also here and since I have no way to find out what part of the gross belongs to 2013 might as well use the data BOM have and make this list  about the earnings of movies released in the country last year. Lastly, MMFF movies were not tracked by Box Office Mojo but the organizer released box office data for the Top 4 movies so I used it on the chart. Once again, this is not likely an accurate prediction  of the grosses of each film as we are not how wide BOM's coverage but better than nothing right?

• The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
• Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
• I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
• Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusives My Week with Marilyn, Lawless, The Raven, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and local movie Gun Guni so it's not on the charts below.

The Hobbit opens with a strong 55.3 million pesos. It's not as huge as what with the superhero movies opened this year but it's December and traditionally box office is not as strong this season due to holiday spending so all things considered this good opening for the Lord of the Rings prequel. Other new releases is the Japanese film adaptation of the popular Anime Rurôuni Kenshin which earned 26 million pesos in 2 weeks which is a terrific performance from a film that is neither in Filipino or English. This could probably open the gates for more Japanese films (or at least the ones with Anime origins) to be exhibited in local theaters. The 3-hour Cloud Atlas earned 5.9 million pesos. The movie's premise is a tough sell so it's was not really expected to earn that much and it actualy did better than more mainstream appealing movies such as horror flick House at the End of the Street (3.6 million pesos) and action movie Deadfall (1.1 million pesos).

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 moves to the #3 spot for the 2012 rankings as the movie earned P319 million surpassing The Mistress' P269 million. The show has a slight chance to surpass The Amazing Spider-man for #2 which earned P340 million but it will depend on how it would hold up before The Hobbit opens on December 13.

Star Cinema's Star Magic anniversary movie 24/7 in Love earned P56 million in 2 weeks and while it's a solid gross it won't reach P100 million  which is somewhat disappointing given the all star cast. This will be also the first movie with John Lloyd Cruz that won't cross the P100 million landmark since Box Office Mojo began tracking Philippine Box Office in 2007.

Rise of the Guardians opened with 34 million pesos which is a solid opening and will have a chance to beat Madagascar 3 (P56 million) for the third highest animated grossing movie this year after Brave (66 million) and Ice Age 4 (92 million).

The first starring roles for Eat Bulaga's famous comic duo Jose and Wally D Kilabots Pogi Brothers.. Weh opened with a decent 14 million pesos. The movie looks relatively cheap (budget-wise) so this is a solid opening and it actually beat other local mainstream movies like Just One Summer, I Do Bidoo Bidoo and My Kontrabida Girl overall earning in just 5 days of release.

Horror sequels Paranormal Activity 4 and Silent Hill: Revelation disappointed with just P12 million  and P5.6 million grosses, respectively. Also opening poorly are Clint Eastwood's drama Trouble with a Curve with just P2 million, Nicholas Cage latest Stolen with P1.6 million, Viva's sexy drama Rigodon P1.2 million and the 3D re-release of Finding Nemo with a paltry P535 thousand.

• The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
• Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 opened with a massive 166.9 million pesos, the second biggest opening after The Avengers (277 million pesos). The final installment is on track to reach the 300 million pesos mark and could challenge The Amazing Spider-Man for the 2nd spot for the year to date charts. Meanwhile, Skyfall bumps The Hunger Games off the top 10 as the latest Bond flick has already 141 million pesos edging the novel adaptatio's 139 million pesos gross. The next installment of The Hunger Games saga opens on November 2013 and will likely fill the void of Twilight (box office wise). Let's wait and see. .

Skyfall rises to #14 earning P122.8 million meanwhile A Secret Affair surpasses The Healing to get the 5th highest earning local movie this year with P112.4 million. The only new movie is the SM Exclusive Chernobyl Diaries earning P1.9 million.

• The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
• Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
• I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
• Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn and local movie Gun Guni so it's not on the charts below.

James Bond dominates the Philippine box office as the latest Bond film Skyfall opens with 77 million pesos. This is an improvement from Quantum of Solace which opened with 54 million pesos in 2008.  Skyfall should easily surpass the Solace's cume of 103 million pesos. Other new releases are Disney's Wreck-It Ralph which had solid debut of 18.6 million pesos while the latest Star Cinema romcom Suddenly It's Magic opened modestly (compared to previous Star Cinema romcom) with 25 million pesos. Meanwhile, A Secret Affair closes in with the 100 million mark as the movie already grossed 95 million pesos in 2 weeks which will be the first non-Star Cinema affiliated movie to reach that mark this year.

A Secret Affair tops the local box office earning a P55.9 million on its opening week. The other new releases did so-so: The Three Stooges remake earned 5 million pesos while horror flick The Apparition nabbed 3 million pesos. Meanwhile, This Guy's In Love With U Mare bumps the Bourne Legacy out of the top 5 of the year to date chart. It won't beat The Mistress anymore but still an impressice performance to overtake The Dark Knight Rises. Also, Taken 2 enters the top 10 as well bumping off Kimmy Dora 2

 This Guy's In Love With You, Mare jumps to the 6th spot of this year's top grossing movies as the movie earned 197 million pesos and while it's an impressive performance it might not topple The Mistress as the year's top grossing local movie of the year. Opening well is the local horror-comedy Tik Tik: The Aswang Chronicles earning 25 million pesos. There are also a bunch of new releases but all did so-so digits, leading the pack is the critically-acclaimed Argo with 6 million pesos followed by another critical favorite Looper with 5.7 million pesos, next is Alex Cross with 3.2 million pesos, SM exclusive Frankenweenie earned OK with 2.7 million pesos,  horror/suspense flicks Bait and V/H/S earned small with 1 million pesos and 751 thousand pesos, respectively.

• The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
• Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
• I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
