Carly Rae Jepsen is still the queen of the Billboard Hot 100 as Call Me Maybe spends a 7th week atop the chart. This is now the second longest running #1 this year next to Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know which ruled the chart for 8 weeks. Jepsen has a chance to force a tie next week but it will be a close match with Maroon Five's Payphone and Katy Perry's Wide Awake as the gap among those songs are now closer than ever with each song has a certain lead. Jepsen in Sales, Maroon Five in Airplay while Perry is rising on both accounts! Let's see which song will top the chart next week

This week top debut is from country artist Jason Aldean, his song Take a Little ride debuts at #12. Also debuting on the chart is, Settle Down at #34, this is the comeback single of No Doubt. The longest staying songs on the chart this week are Kelly Clarkson's Stronger and .fun's We Are Young both at 31 weeks.

Philippine Box Office Roundup 20

For last week's recap, go here and as always a couple of reminders and disclaimers:

• The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
• Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
• I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
• Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.

The Dark Knight Rises opens with a strong 98.6 million pesos. That's the third best opening after The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-man but don't get me wrong as this is a good opening for The Dark Knight sequel as the movie is darker and longer than the other two which would not be as appetizing to the family audience which made a good percentage of the grosses of the first two superhero movies. Plus the movie is shown in 2D only unlike the first two which had 3D versions to boost their grosses. The Dark Knight earned around 150 million pesos back in 2008 and The Dark Knight Rises is certain to surpass that.

Philippine Box Office Roundup 19

To check out last week's roundup click here and as always a couple of reminders and disclaimers:

• The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
• Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
• I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
• Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.

Filipinos love Scrat and company as the 4th installment of the Ice Age series Ice Age: Continental Drift opened strongly in the Philippine box office earning 43.8 million pesos. The movie is poised to be this year's top animated movie as it is already close with the current champ, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, gross of 56 million pesos.

Other new releases this week is the Channing Tatum stripper movie Magic Mike which earned an OK (for the type of movie this is) 8 million pesos and the SM-exclusive Act of Valor that earned 2 million pesos, which is line of the earnings of previous SM-exclusive cinemas

The Amazing Spider-man cross 300 million mark, already earning 320 million pesos in 3 weeks. But the movie will be hit badly as The Dark Knight Rises invaded the theaters last week although not as dominant as The Avengers and the aforementioned as the practically had 90% of the screens when they opened which is not the case for Christopher Nolan which faces the sequel of the more famil- friendly Ice Age. And with the almost 3-hour runtime, don't expect the movie to earn as huge as first two superhero flicks

Victoria Ruffo is hailed as the Queen of TeleNovelas in Latin America. She starred in several hit shows such as Triunfo Del Amor, Simplemente Maria, En Nombre Del Amor and the smash hit La Madrastra. La Madrastra is one of the initial offerings of TeleNovela Channel when it was launched last year. The soap ended its run last April but requests to air it again flooded the channel.

Spotlight: REquieme!

First of all, I'm so excited to see this film on this year's Cinemalaya Film Festival because my good friend Anthony Falcon is part of the cast! He was my high school friend and we also went to the same college under the same department (he's a Communications major while I'm a Broadcast Journalism major) and our school organizations' offices were just right at each other (he was part of of the school theater while I was part of the student publication). So I'm so proud to see my good friend's dreams coming true! Anyway, even without a friend connection I still think REquieme's premise is very interesting plus the director, Loy Arcenas, impressed me last year Niño so I'm looking forward to his follow up. Here are the screening schedules of the movie and plot synopsis. I'm planning to watch this on Wedneday after work, so excited already!

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: July 28, 2012)

Call Me Maybe logs its 6th week atop the Billboard Hot 100 as the song continues to dominate the chart despite drop in sales and airplay. But Call Me Maybe still has the perfect balance of all chart components to remain on top. Meanwhile, Payphone continues its impressive chart logging its 13th consecutive week in the top 3 but never reaching the top spot. Will Maroon Five ever get to #1 ? It still has a chance but it will be tough with Katy Perry's Wide Awake rising to #3 this week. This is Perry 8th consecutive top 3 hit.

Entering the top 10 this week are Flo Rida's Whistle which rises #12 to #7 and Pink's latest single Blow Me (One Last Kiss) which zooms #58 to #. It's the 8th top 10 hit of the former while the 12th hit for the latter.
