2011 Emmy Awards Predictions [Part 1]

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards is almost here! It will be on September 18, 2011 in the U.S (September 19,8 am in the Philippines via Velvet channel). This week I'll share to you my predictions for some categories. For the first part I'm gonna dish out who I think will win in the writing and directing categories. Let's roll!

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A COMEDY SERIES
  • Modern Family - Halloween
  • Modern Family - Slow Down Your Neighbors
  • Modern Family - See You Next Fall
  • 30 Rock - Live Show
  • How I Met Your Mother - Subway Wars
Winner: Beth McCarthy [30 Rock "Live Show"]
Close Second: Michael Spiller [Modern Family "Halloween"]
Wildcard: Pamela Fryman [How I Met Your Mother "Subway Wars"]

I think this will be a close fight between Spiller and McCarthy, Spiller have the edge of winning the DGA award earlier this year however McCarthy was able to successfully translate 30 Rock's essence and humor to the live, multicamera format and that's something hard to do so I can see the academy honoring this amazing achievement. My wildcard pick is Fryman, this episode is really well-directed and this episode already won the editing award so this might surprise us come Emmy night.

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A DRAMA SERIES
  • Boardwalk Empire - Boardwalk Empire
  • Boardwalk Empire - Anastasia
  • The Borgias - The Poisoned Chalice/The Assassin
  • The Killing - Pilot
  • Game of Thrones - Winter is Coming

Winner: Martin Scorsese [Boardwalk Empire "Pilot"]
Close Second: Tim Van Patten [Games of Thrones "Winter is Coming"]

This is Scorsese's award to lose and I would be utterly shocked if he doesn't win the award. But if ever there's someone that could beat the Academy award winner it would be Van Patten who helmed the wonderfully-crafted pilot of Games of Thrones.

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A COMEDY SERIES
  • Episodes - Episodes 107
  • Louie - Poker/Divorce
  • Modern Family - Caught in the Act
  • The Office - Goodbye Michael
  • 30 Rock - Reaganing
Winner: Louis C.K [Louie "Poker/Divorce]
Close Second: Greg Daniels [The Office "Goodbye Michael"]
Wildcard: Steven Levitan / Jeffrey Richman [Modern Family "Caught in the Act"]

Honestly speaking Louie's Poker/Divorce is so-so overall but the "Poker" part of the episode was amazing and I could see that alone could carry this episode to a win. Daniel's wrote a heartfelt sendoff for its main character giving this show a great shot for the award. Personally, I found "Caught in the Act" just an OK episode of Modern Family but among the nominees this episode had the most laugh out loud moments so this should not be counted out.

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A DRAMA SERIES
  • Friday Night Lights - Always
  • Game of Thrones - Daelor
  • The Killing - Pilot
  • Mad Men - The Suitcase
  • Mad Men - Blowing Smoke

Winner: Matthew Weiner [Mad Men "The Suitcase"]
Close Second: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss [Game of Thrones "Baelor"]
Wildcard: Jason Katims [Friday Night Lights "Always"]

Weiner has owned this category for the past couple of years already and "The Suitcase" is a particularly strong episode so this would be his award to lose. "Baelor" is a strong acclaimed episode as well so that could challenge Weiner but we should not count out Katims who wrote a good episode that closed out the series on a good note.
