Nostalgia Fit: These Things Defined an Era

I'm really a sentimental freak! I know things change, we need to move on. But it's always nice to look back on the things that you grew up with, most of this stuff are almost gone but they will be in my heart forever, haha how mushy! Reminiscing makes us giddy. It makes you smile, it will bring good memories. Nostalgia is a precious feeling.
Komiks

- I know the Pinoy komiks is still alive as the success of Pugad Baboy, Beerkada, and Kiko Machine showed but the weekly komiks is something I really miss. I'm a big fan of Filipino Funny Komiks for Children and my family use to buy a lot of komiks back in the day. This was the past time of the common folk back in the day. There was a komiks for everybody, for kids, for moms, for teens, for men. A lot of great stories were told there!

WalkMan and Cassette Tapes

- This was the iPod before haha. I still regret that my severe use of my walkman led to its destruction. Through Walkman I became a radio fanatic, both FM and AM!
Meanwhile, cassette tapes were the cheap way for us to purchase records, now people get music for free through illegal downloading [which is killing the industry sadly]. Album sales were high in the Philippines back in the day mainly because of cassette tapes. I treasure my collection of tapes, they are hard to find memorabilia already haha!
I also use to record songs played on radio through cassette too haha. Ever heard of mix tape? The mix tape was the old school way of today's burning a CD :D

VHS

- The VHS player, the rewinder with the goofy sound playing when you rewind a tape. We use to visit the video shops a lot back in the day to rent movies on VHS. Well, the DVD is a lot better of course compared to VHS but through VHS a lot of homemade family videos were made. We have one too, the video coverage of my sister's 18th birthday debut party 13 years ago. Too bad we couldn't view it anymore because our VHS player is broken already.

Song Hits

- Today it's now easy to Google a song's lyrics and chords. Before, buying songhits was my way to know the lyrics of the songs (guitar chords for my brother). I always wait for a songhits to feature an album I just bought recently on cassette tape. They were also my source for music news and some also featured music countdowns and profiles of radio DJs. There are still songhits on sale until now but I guess it is not as popular as before.

Brick Game

- This was the PSP back in the day. I'm not really into gaming but I was addicted with playing Brick Games in the past haha. I think we had 3 brick game toys one for each of us brothers. All are gone now. It's a very simple game but it was fun playing it! Less is more sometimes

Charice to make Chart History!

Charice perfomed her single "Note to God"on Oprah today and as expected she is blasting on the US charts! I was very sure she will get a huge boost, after all a performance on Oprah made Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love a success in the US and Josh Groban's Noel the best selling album in the US in 2007 despite being a CHRISTMAS album. But I did not expect that Charice's single will do this well, see the numbers below:

As a chart geek and a Filipino, I'm so thrilled that Charice's international debut single is doing well. I'm so excited for her, she will chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 this week for sure! The first Filipino to do since I believe Jocelyn Enriquez 12 years ago with A Little Bit of Ecstacy and Do You Miss Me 12 years ago. She will definitely make chart news this week. I'm very excited. It's really amazing how YouTube paved the way for her to reach this kind of success. Ayos!

I'm still performing terribly at work. I AM ASHAMED ALREADY.
I don't know what to do anymore, I tried my best to make things work but just when I thought I was already progressing I faced another setback today. My work was so bad that it was made an example of a failure work! My superior was still nice though by not revealing who did that stupidity. But I can feel it he is already losing his patience with me.
Why am I having the hard time to absorb the guidelines for editing those scientific manuals?
Well, I know the answer but that's no excuse. Yes, I don't like the job nature but the pay is good and the benefits I could reap in the future are so great. But why do I feel that those reasons are not good enough for me? I know these trying times I should not be picky but I could not help but feel empty everytime I go to work. And as my work performance shows, this is not working out.
We are having a "test" this week to evaluate our work. I'm afraid I'll fail it. I might lose this job.
And even if I luckily pass, I will still not enjoy or even at least like this job, I will still yearn for that something. But I'm afraid to take the risk and search for that one. I did that last year after graduation, I waited that I will get the job but I was left heartbroken.
Growing up is so hard.

Nostalgia Fit: S Club 7

What I really love about YouTube is that it comes in handy for my nostalgia fits haha.
Today, out of the blue I typed S CLUB 7. Over a decade ago, this song came out and it was love at first hear. "Bring it All Back"is an infectious bubblegum pop song and the choreography in its music video was very 'cool' for me back in the day haha. This is such a happy song and the video is fun to watch! The dance steps were cute haha. And I really had a strong crush with members Rachel and Hannah <3 . I also liked some of their other singles like "Never had a Dream Come True", "Reach", and "Don't Stop Movin" but their first single would always be special. The song reminds me of my childhood innocence where a simple catchy song will make my day. Nowadays, to be happy is just a struggle. Oh wait I will not go there haha. Let me just reminisce again, see the video below and let's dance! :D

My Top 5 Favorite Music Videos

As a kid, I love watching MTV, back then it was still part of Studio 23, it became so famous that it moved into its own free channel but eventually went to cable TV. Then there was also Channel [V] but it was not as successful here in the Philippines and then there came MYX who provided lyrics for the videos just like the videoke. I love music videos with great concepts like an edgy story, magnificent production, amazing choreography and quirky themes.

Some great videos would make me like the song . And there are the videos that are just worth repeating over and over again.Of the several videos produced there will be the ones that will leave a significant impact to you
Today, thanks to YouTube, we could now gain access to several music videos especially from the past. Let me share to you my Top 5 Favorite Music Videos of All Time.

Click the image of each entry to see the corresponding music video.

5. Chasing Pavements - Adele (2008)

- I love the "dead-couple-dancing-lying-down" concept and how the dance told their love story.

4. Coffee and TV - Blur (1999)

The star of this music video, the milk carton, is iconic. The concept is both cute and bizarre! There is something with the smile of the milk carton, its charming and haunting. It will make you think why did they use a milk carton, does it symbolize something?

3. The Scientist - Coldplay (2002)

The editing of this video is top-notch and very tight. You want to know how the story unfolds and towards the end it will leave you feel sad because you know what happened.

2. Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim (2001)

I remember seeing this music video a lot of times in MTV back in the day. Christopher Walken is just amazing in this video. It was really surprising to see a serious actor dance like that and pull it off.

1. Here It Goes Again - OK Go (2006)

This won a Grammy for Best Music Video- Short Form and it deserves it hands down. This video is a simple concept but very difficult to do , dancing a well-choreographed routine on a treadmill in a singular take is very impressive. One of the most creative music videos ever!

Blackout

The death of Ted Failon's wife seems like an episode straight from CSI however unlike the show we are not sure if we could get answers, instead this case will just get a bunch of conspiracy theories and rumors which will elevate this to an urban legend in no time, which is very sad considering how tragic the incident is. But does it really matter if we know what really happened? All I know someone died and a family shattered. I admit I also had theories and suspicions regarding the case but then I realized no matter what the news would present, we will never know the real story behind this. And its not really our business to begin with, for me the family and close friends are the only people that deserves to know what happened. This is their lives. I know that as Failon is a public figure it is inevitable that the case won't be publicized, plus this tragedy resulted to more issues and conflicts. But it have been really messy now.
I won't join this circus.
I won't follow this case anymore, it's painful to watch already.
And this is also to show respect to the deceased and her family.
May she rest in peace.

400

This is my 400th post here, yay!
400 posts of anything and everything although I started having the Philippine Music Charts recap and my top 20 songs of each month here last year so therefore this blog already have 'regulars' so to speak. I changed the blog description from 'Anything Under the Sun' to 'Musings and Music Charts' because I find the previous so boring already haha plus the new one perfectly captured what the blog is all about already haha.
***
By the way, I removed the "Quick Messages" (cbox) here because it was vandalized, tsk..tsk.. If you want to say something, kindly leave a comment on each entry.
***
The Lenten break is about to end and well I spend it trying to do many things with some
of those stuff not fully accomplished.
But I was able to analyze and reflect on some of the problems I've been having lately. I know what to do to solve this, I just hope I could apply that succesfully.
I realized I was not really afraid of growing old but growing up.
***
Happy Easter everyone!

Next On...

I only have two working days next week because of Araw ng Kagitingan and the Holy Week and I never felt this happy since classes were canceled on the day the first draft of our college thesis was due haha. Let's just say this will be an opportunity to evaluate and reflect on my life. Yes, I will do serious contemplating this Holy Week break.
Where am I heading?
Am I making the right decisions?
Yes, those questions are lingering in my head the past few days because this week I realized that I don't have a clear plan on my life, I was just riding the wave with no clear direction.
I performed terribly at work this week because of my own fault. My errors were horrendous, I'm sure my superior was annoyed with the quality of work I've been submitting, thank God he is polite and did not embarrass me but everytime he discussed what's wrong with my work I really want to disappear at that moment due to embarrassment on how stupid my errors were!
And I witnessed how my batchmates are progressing while I get left behind. I admit that I took it hard upon realizing that among the new employees, I'm in the bottom pile in terms of performance. It sucks really especially for someone like me who was a consistent good student in school. Yes, I don't really aspire to be on top all the time BUT I never liked being at the bottom . I am where I am right now at work because I did not take my job that serious because I had no goals, I was just working for the sake of not being unemployed. Then it hit me that's the reason I could not focus on work and thus performing poorly. That's why the upcoming week I will take the first step.

Self-Indulgence

I don't usually spend that much (you can say I'm kuripot haha) but last week I decided to be self-indulgent and bought three books, 1 CD, and 2 VCDs since I realized I do have some extra cash and the stuff I bought are not that expensive (the most expensive cost 250 pesos). Anyway, for the VCDs I bought WALL-E and JUNO, two movies that I really waited for the prices of the original VCD to go down and I was lucky because both titles are part of the "buy 1, take 1 promo" of AstroPlus. I'm supporting original VCDs actually because I don't want the industry to die, I could not afford original DVDs so I go for the cheaper alternative which are the VCDs . But I would not be a hypocrite I do buy pirated stuff but mostly for the hard to find ones and US TV series or watch free online streaming (I don't know how to downloads using torrents haha). But as much as possible and as long as I could find it on shops, I'll go for original. As for tv shows, well I went back to watching it on real TV, yeah I'll be delayed but it's okay. Although for US TV shows not available local TV, I might still buy pirated stuff or watch it online haha. But lately I'm not much of a TV person unlike before.
For the music CD, I bought Pupil's second album Wildlife and it was surely worth my money! I love it! I don't often buy CDs anymore because they are bit pricey unlike when there were still cassette tapes which were cheaper and I was frequent buyer back then haha.
I know we could download it for free but like the VCD/DVD, I don't want the industry to die and I don't even have an mp3 player anyway because I'm a radio fan. But yes I do download some singles (but very rare) I never downloaded a full album/discography of artists, usually I check album tracks through YouTube. But I do hope that someday we could have a legal downloads sales market like in other countries with easier payment means (no need for a credit card instead they could just have 'cards' like the cellular phone prepaid cards where your purchases will be just deducted from there).
As for the books, I bought Ricky Lee's first novel Para Kay B (or kung paano dinevaste ng pag-ibig ang 4 out 5 sa atin), I'm on the middle part already and the plot's really deep yet it does not alienate readers with hard to understand words and metaphors.
I also bought the latest compilation books of newspaper comic strips Beerkada of the Philippine Star and Kikomachine Komix of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. I love reading those comics because of the comic relief they give me, they are the type of books worth re-reading, been collecting their compilations since they started, I have all 9 Beerkada books and 5 Kikomachine books. I also have the 20 books and the several off shoots of the most popular newspaper comic strip in the country today, Pugad Baboy.
I do find it amazing that I could now buy my "luxuries" with my own money now although I'm proud to say when I was still a student, I could buy those with my allowance without going broke because I was raised by my parents to manage money well. Yes, I had savings but I never deprived myself with stuff that are self-indulgent. I had made bad decisions and experienced impulsive buying but I charged it to experience. Moderation is the key.
