Midyear Musings (Midweek Musings 15)

The first half of 2011 is almost over and I know I've been saying this since time immemorial but 'time really flies' and I really can't believe we're already on the halfway mark already. The past 6 months have been very interesting to say the least. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, both personally and professionally. But I learned a lot and I admit I'm still in the process of transitioning to adulthood. Oh yes that word "adulthood", it's only this year that I realized (and accepted) that I am really an adult now. All they have said about the "real world" is so true and I really have a new found appreciation of my life before as a teen. Sometimes I admit I love to reminisce because the present is too tough and the future is so uncertain the relieving the past gives a warm feeling to my heart. I know all people go through to this phase and I'm glad I was raised well to handle this kind of stuff. I'm not saying I'm a brave young adult now, like I said I'm still in the process. And I know this is just the start of more challenges to come but I'm ready. There will be times I will feel like breaking down or giving up but it's just normal and what's important is how you will face whatever life throws at you. aI will do my best to handle all the hurdles that comes along in the best way possible. I am at a point of my life where decision making is so essential that having a strong sense of self is important. I don't know if I'm placing the right words to fully explain what I'm feeling right now so pardon me if what I'm saying is just running in circles. Anyway, with those issues haha I just wanna thank God for guiding me, I also had some struggles spiritually I admit but I'm over it and my faith is stronger than ever :)

Spotlight: Transformers: Dark of The Moon

Last night I was invited by Pinoyexchange to watch Solar Entertainment's press screening of Transformers: Dark of the Moon at IMAX, SM Mall of Asia. Truth be told, it was my first to watch a movie in 3D since I always resisted watching movies in that form because it's expensive haha! So I'm glad my 3D movie experiencing is for free! Anyway, here's my review of the movie which can also be seen at the Movies subforum of Pinoyexchange.com

Michael Bay has already said that Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the last of the movie franchise (of course there’s still a possibility of a reboot or another sequel in the future with another director at helm) and while this trilogy (intended or not) is not a well constructed one as a whole, the third Transformers movie served as a fitting end to the franchise.

Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) struggles in his transition to adulthood and has been longing for the days when he felt that he mattered. After helping save the world twice, Sam feels like a total loser as he had difficulty landing jobs after graduating from college and what’s worse, his new girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) is basically supporting him. He finds a job later on which is somewhat degrading but this job led him to discover the brewing conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons which will endanger the lives of the human race.

The movie takes on an alternate history which involves the 1969 NASA moon landing and the way they told that story is contrived (the alternate history its trying to tell is muddled as well) but it’s serviceable. In Transformers: Dark of the Moon the Autobots and the Decepticons take center stage, yes Sam is still a prominent character but this time around the robots are not just there to deliver those action sequences but their characters in this movie have more substance and has purpose. And this not limited only to Optimus Prime and Bumblebee as almost every robot (even the little ones) left a strong impression. The Decepticons were nastier and scarier too.

LaBeouf did fine as Sam transitions from awkward teen to a mature young man. Sam still has those annoying childlike qualities (his screams for example) but he steps up in this movie and is not just an accidental hero who was only trapped by circumstance. Megan Fox’s replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley did okay, unless you are easily distracted with her accent and her lips then she shouldn’t be a bother. You could still somehow feel that Carly is really just Mikaela with the way her relationship with Sam is developed plus how Bay treated her character (despite being in the middle of an apocalyptic battle she’s still clean and gorgeous and she was running and getting thrown while wearing high heels at that). I didn’t like the movie’s attempt for humor though as it was unnecessary and was just simply annoying. Ken Jeong’s character was a great example to that, the character has a real purpose but choosing to play the character with toilet humor diminishes his credibility.

The action scenes and visual effects are good and there are a lot of insane sequences here which translated well on screen. However, there were really a lot of things going on that you could easily lose track on what’s happening already. And while the action sequences are fun to watch it was dragged on too long and could have been tightened even more like lessen the use of the slow-mos and better pacing. It’s a hot mess.

Overall, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is an entertaining ride, it has a great but not perfectly polished visuals but this time around it has a story that is functional that drives the story to a point with more dynamic characters carrying the movie. 7 /10

Billboard Hot 100 (July 2, 2011)

Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep" streak continues as it spends a 7th consecutive week atop the Billboard Hot 100 and is now the longest running #1 song for 2011 beating Lady GaGa's "Born This Way" which logged 6 weeks at #1 earlier this year.

Katy Perry is on track to get her 5th consecutive #1 as her 5th single from her sophomore album "Last Friday Night" zooms #31 to #4 this week. She previously topped the Hot 100 with "California Girls" (6 weeks), "Teenage Dream" (2 weeks), "Firework" (4 weeks) and "E.T" (5 weeks) all from the same album. If she manages to get "Last Friday Night" to #1 she will only be the second artist to be able to send 5 songs from 1 album to #1 after Michael Jackson did it in the 80s with his album "Bad" which spawned the hits "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man In The Mirror" and "Dirty Diana.

This week's top debut comes from Bad Meets Evil, a side project of Eminem which teams him up with former D12 member Royce da 5'9". Their single 'Lighters" which features Bruno Mars lands at #16 which makes Bruno Mars 6th Top 20 Hit which is equally divided with his three singles as lead artists and three singles as featured artist.

Selena Gomez and The Scene's "Who Says" jumps #27-#22 on its 14th week on the chart. This is Selena's highest charting single of her career on the Hot 100.

The longest chart sitter is still Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"which hangs on for another week on the chart at #48 on its 48th week on the chart. It could drop on the chart next week and go recurrent. Let's wait and see

Next week watch out for Maroon Five's new song "Moves Like Jagger" which features Christina Aguilera to make a big splash on the chart next week as the song is currently the #1 song on US iTunes on the heels of a live performance of that song on the new hit American reality-singing competition "The Voice" where Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera are mentors.

Please Watch Frenzy Xtreme at Solar Sports

As the title shamelessly says, please watch "Frenzy Xtreme" tonight June 11, 2011, Saturday, 8 pm at Solar Sports channel. This is a one-hour program that chronicles the excitement of the "Frenzy Xtreme: Extreme Sports Competition" that was held last May 20 and 21 at SM Mall of Asia. Our company Beginnings At Twenty Plus organized the said event and I wrote the events script/host spiels (our host was the lovely and very nice Andi Manzano of Magic 89.9) and also co-wrote the script for this one hour show. Editing this one was really tough, I had sleepless nights and stayed overnight at the office for two days (and missed out on the company outing too). But my "sacrifice" paled in comparison with our producers and editors who stayed for almost 4 days to make it on time. I'm proud of this project a lot even though I admit the pressure almost got me. Anyway, the bottomline is I learned a lot from this experience and I will definitely not forget this :)

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: June 18, 2011)

Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" logs its 5th straight week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the song will likely top next week's chart for a 6th week which will be, along with Lady GaGa's "Born This Way", the longest run at #1 so far this year.

Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song" rises to #4, earning a new peak and also matches the lowest peaking Bruno Mars-related song Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" which also peaked at #4. The song has a shot to get a new peak at #3 as it has rising airplay and solid sales but a top 2 peak, much less #1, is a long shot with "Rolling in the Deep" still strong and #2 Pitbull's "Give Me Everything Tonight" soaring on both airplay and sales.

Nicki Minaj is thisclose on landing her first top 10 hit as a lead artist as the insanely catchy "Super Bass" jumps to #11 this week. Nicki Minaj has two top 10 song as a featured artist: Britney Spears' "Til The World Ends (Remix)" which peaked at #3 and Trey Songz' "Bottoms Up" which peaked at #6. Her highest peaking song as a lead artist is "Moment For Life" with Drake which peaked at #13.

One Republic's "Good Life" jumps #23-#16 this week, their 3rd highest ranking song after "Apologize" (#2) and "Stop and Stare" (#15). This is an impressive achievement for a 4th single form an album that was released two years ago and had disappointing sales. I personally hope it could break the top 10 but that's tough thing to do these days as pop/rock band songs struggle on the Hot 100. Last year, Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" was the only pop/rock band song that broke in the Top 10. Will "Good Life" break the drought? Let's wait and see.

Coldplay earns their 6th Top 40 hit with their new single "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" enters the chart at #29, this week's top debut. Coldplay's other Top 40 hits were "Viva La Vida" (#1 for 3 weeks), "Speed of Sound" (#8), "Christmas Lights" (#25), "Clocks" (#29) and "Violet Hill" (#40). Coldplay's other notable songs "Yellow" and "Fix You" peaked at #48 and #59, respectively. While my favorite Codplay song of all time "The Scientist" failed to chart.

Country star Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" rises to #23 this week, expect this song to surpass Aldean's previous best "Big Green Tractor" which peaked at #18 two years ago. The song's remix featuring Ludacris is currently in US iTunes Top 10 while the original is still in top 10 as well so the accumulated sales for both versions will push the song in the Top 10, and perhaps Top 5, zone next week.

After dropping out last week, Lady GaGa's "Judas" re-enters the chart at #78 but don't expect the song to have a renaissance as third single "The Edge of Glory" already overshadowed it in both sales and airplay rises #8-#7 this week. Meanwhile, Beyonce's 'Run The World (Girls" drops from its peak position at #29 last week all the way down to #55 this week. Beyonce's new single "Best Thing I Never Had" enters the chart at #84

After almost dropping out on the chart last week, Bruno Mars' "Grenade" and "Just The Way You Are" avoids going recurrent this week with Grenade staying put at #50 (36 weeks) and "Just The Way You Are" climbing to #44 from #48 last week (46 weeks on the chart).
