Spotlight: The Avengers

To be honest the first trailer of The Avengers didn't impress me that much. I didn't feel the spectacle of having these superheroes in one movie but the recently released new trailer is very good and I must say this would definitely make a killing in the box office. I'm not a comic book geek (despite how I look haha) but this already got me excited what more the hardcore fans? Anyway, here's the the latest trailer of The Avengers coming out this April:

Review: "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"

Last night I attended the press screening of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" at Powerplant Mall. Thanks to Pinoyexchange and Warner Bros Pictures Philippines. You can also see this review at Official PEx Movie Reviews.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is anchored by a boy who has idiosyncratic reactions to a life-changing event. With a not-so-likable lead and a real life tragedy in the background, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a difficult movie to sit through but it does offer an interesting point of view of someone going through a deep pain.

Oskar (Thomas Horn) is an eleven year old boy struggling to deal with the death of his father (Tom Hanks) who died during the 9/11 attacks. A year after his death, Oskar finds a key labeled “Black” in his father's belongings and he begins his hunt to track down its origin thinking that this is his father's last challenge that he needs to solve. In his journey, Oskar meets various people including the mysterious The Renter (Max Von Sydow) but at the same time it pulls him away with his mother (Sandra Bullock).

The film suggests that Oskar is suffering from Asperger's Syndrome and with him narrating the story, it gives us a glimpse on how someone who has a special condition like him process a devastating event of a losing someone in such a horrible way. As I said above it's not an easy watch and a lot of Oskar's mannerisms and actions will make you want to slap him but what the film does is to get us in his shoes,to let us see how he process a pain when he doesn't have the emotional capability to digest it all in. That for me is fascinating to watch as I felt Oskar's confusion and the hunger to get an answer to a question he does not fully understand but feels the need to uncover it in any way possible. I felt the struggle of not getting the answer he wanted and letting go of the memory of the person that he loves so much.

I'm not sure if Oskar is an accurate depiction of most kids with special needs but I have to say though that the character resonated well with me because I personally know someone who's just like him and what I saw in the movie mirrors him perfectly. They offend people obliviously because they say things as it is. Deep inside though they want to connect to people better but their obsessive and detail-oriented nature keeps them from doing so.

The controversial aspect of this movie is the fact that story's point of inception is during the September 11 attacks at the World Trade Center in New York. It's a sensitive topic that must be handled delicately and I have to say that some of the choices director Stephen Daldry made pushed the buttons a little too hard making the film somehow exhausting to watch. In some ways it felt like the tragedy was exploited to manipulate emotions but however the sense of grief felt in the incident tied in with Oskar's emotional journey.

With Oskar at the center of the story, it's important that they get the right actor to play this difficult character and Thomas Horn did an excellent job. For a first timer (he was discovered in the quiz show Jeopardy), it's quite impressive how he held his ground with seasoned actors. I can imagine how physically and emotionally difficult the role is and while there were scenes in the first part of the film where Horn's performance felt too calculated, he lets loose as the movie progresses.

Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are the big names in the cast but it should be noted that their roles are quite small especially Hanks for obvious reasons. But to their credit they made their short scenes shine and Bullock in particular was strong in the confrontation scene she had with Oskar. While the screenplay did not have the extensive background of The Renter like in the novel, Max Von Sydow's performance was so good that the character left a very strong impression.

Screenwriter Eric Roth did a solid job of adapting Jonathan Safran Foer's book as Oskar's voice in the novel was translated well on the big screen. For those who read the book, some characters in the novel are not present here like Ron (Linda's friend whom Oskar suspects as her new boyfriend) and the old man who does not leave his room until he accompanies Oskar in his search. And while the book's original ending was there, the film added a couple of new scenes to wrap up the story in a more traditional way. The film's ending felt a little too heavy-handed but it connects well to the story overall.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close at its core is a film about grief and the process of dealing with a great loss. The film worked for me on an emotional level, it maybe not be for everyone as the divided critical reception suggests, but it has a story worth telling. 8 / 10

The 84th Academy Awards Winners

And here are the Oscar winners! I did a horrific 11/24 in my Oscar predictions! I loved Hugo but I never thought it would get a lot of awards but still I'm very pleased it won 5 Oscars! The technical aspect of that film is just amazing. The Girl with the Dragon also pulled a surprise by winning Best Film Editing, this is the same team that won for The Social Network last year so back to back win for them and I must agree with the award, the film was sleekly edited and hold the film together and it's not easy given the film's several subplots. And woah Meryl Streep finally bag her 3rd Oscar beating front runner Viola Davis. And I'm glad Man or Muppet won! Although to be honest I wish The Muppets won for the snubbed Life's a Happy Song instead, but still it's a brilliant funny song and it's cool to have Academy Award winner tagged next to Bret McKenzie. Anyway, here's the list of 2012 Oscar winners:

Oscars 2012: Best Original Song Square Off

The 84th Academy Awards is happening on Monday (Philippine time) and one thing I'm really disappointed this year is the Best Original Song category where only TWO songs are nominated. I was really frustrated that they snubbed The Muppets' "Life's a Happy Song" which is a fun, energetic song to watch on stage during the awards night. But well it didn't matter anyway because even if the song got nominated we won't be seeing a performance after all since the Academy dropped the original song performances this year! The two nominated songs: "Man or Muppet" from The Muppets nd "Real in Rio" from Rio could have interesting and entertaining production numbers but oh well (and frankly could have provided an entertaining intermission to an otherwise too serious awards show). I hope the music branch of the Academy will do a better job this year.

Anyway, the two songs deserved their nomination! Many Oscar watchers are predicting "Man or Muppet" will prevail given the brilliant funny composition of Flight of the Conchords' Bret Mackenzie but "Real in Rio" is a show stopper type song no less composed by the legendary Sergio Mendes. So in my 2012 Oscar Awards predictions I posted earlier, I predicted "Real in Rio" will win. I think the Academy will take the opportunity to reward Mendes. But anyway whichever song wins, I'll be happy. But still, the fact that the Academy robbed us of seeing Anne Hathaway (for Rio) and Jason Segel (for the Muppets) perform on stage still saddens me. Here are the nominated songs:

"Real in Rio" from Rio

"Man or Muppet" from The Muppets

Spotlight: "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore"

While doing some research for my 84th Oscar Awards predictions post I stumbled into Best Short Film - Animated nominee "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" which I've read is the one to beat in this category. Luckily, it can be see via YouTube and wow I was mesmerize! I never thought an animated short can get me teary eyed. Anyway, check out the short below and see what I mean:

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: March 3, 2012)

Katy Perry's Part of Me debuts atop the Billboard Hot 100 after selling more than 400k downloads this week in the wake of its Grammy Awards performance. This is Perry's 7th Hot 100 #1 following her string of five #1 hits from her sophomore album (the album's 6th single The One That Got Away lived up to its title and ended the #1 streak by peaking at #3). The song ia from the upcoming re-released edition of her album subtitled The Complete Confection. The last song to debut at #1 was Lady GaGa's Born this Way a year ago. Part of Me is the 20th song to debut at #1 on the chart, here are the other 19 songs that entered the chart at the summit:

1. Michael Jackson — "You Are Not Alone" (September 2, 1995)
2. Mariah Carey — "Fantasy" (September 30, 1995)
3. Whitney Houston — "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (November 25, 1995)
4. Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men — "One Sweet Day" (December 2, 1995)
5. Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112 — "I'll Be Missing You" (June 14, 1997)
6. Mariah Carey — "Honey" (September 13, 1997)
7. Elton John — "Candle in the Wind 1997" / "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" (October 11, 1997)
8. Céline Dion — "My Heart Will Go On" (February 28, 1998)
9. Aerosmith — "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (September 5, 1998)
10. Lauryn Hill — "Doo Wop (That Thing)" (November 14, 1998)
11. Clay Aiken — "This Is the Night" (June 28, 2003)
12. Fantasia — "I Believe" (July 10, 2004)
13. Carrie Underwood — "Inside Your Heaven" (July 2, 2005)
14. Taylor Hicks — "Do I Make You Proud" (July 1, 2006)
15. Britney Spears — "3" (October 24, 2009)
16. Eminem — "Not Afraid" (May 22, 2010)
17. Kesha — "We R Who We R" (November 13, 2010)
18. Britney Spears — "Hold It Against Me" (January 29, 2011)
19. Lady Gaga — "Born This Way" (February 26, 2011)

While she didn't hit #1 this week Adele still had a great week. She is still in command of the Billboard 200 Albums for a 21st week and selling 730K copies with, all 3 singles from that album are inside the top 10. Set Fire to the Rain holds at #2, 59-week old single Rolling in the Deep leaps to #5 and 33-week old single Someone Like You jumps to #7.

The late Whitney Houston's former #1 single I Will Always Love You (which was a re-entered the chart last week thanks to a policy change) jumps up to #3 this week. Also, I Wanna Dance With Somebody is up to #25, Greatest Love Of All is at #36 and How Will I Know re-enters the chart at #49.

Last week's #1 Stronger by Kelly drops to #4 but expect it to go back to #2 or even #1 as the song is surging in airplay and sales are consistent. Also, fun.'s We Are Young drops to #6 from #3 last week but it's back at #1 on iTunes and with rising radio airplay to boot so we would likely see the song stay in the top 10 for awhile.

Aside from the #1 debut of Katy Perry's latest track, two other new songs debuts in the top 10 and both songs also got a sales boost from the Grammy Awards: Nicki Minaj's Starships at #9 and Chris Brown's Turn Up the Music at #10.

British boybands are making promising moves on the chart this week: The Wanted's Glad You Came rises to #23 and is currently #4 on US iTunes so expect to jump in the top 20, maybe top 10, next week while One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful debuts strong at #28.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

The Philippine Box Office as of Feb. 12, 2012

I've been obsessing with box office than I normally do in the past. I casually monitored US box office over the years but it was only last year that my interest intensified to almost the same level with my love for music charts and US TV ratings. Oh yes, another media statistics content that I love to consume! Anyway, I've been hanging out at Box Office Theory forum a lot lately and well I started updating the Philippine box office thread there and let me share to you the list but first here are some notes:

  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not reported on Box Office Mojo so they are not on the list.
  • There's a discrepancy with Underworld Awakening's box office stat on the said site. On the latest weekend box office they posted (Feb 8-12, 2012) the movie;s gross to date is already $2.2 million but on their 2012 Box Office list, they have it only at around $755k. I followed the gross to date of the latest weekend box office list since it's more believable and consistent with its previous reports they posted and I strongly believe the 2012 box office list is just an error.

Filipinos certainly love vampires as Underworld Awakening leads the Philippine Box Office so far this 2012 earning rought $2.2 million dollars and roughly 96 million pesos. I don't think Underworld Awakening has a shot to cross 100 million pesos mark as the show is already gone in most theaters. Following Underworld Awakening are the first foreign releases of the year Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with $1.4 million / 61 million pesos and Alvin and the Chipmunks with $1.3 million / 56 million pesos. In 2010, The first Sherlock Holmes earned $1.1 million while the second Alvin & The Chipmunks movie was close roughly earning $1.1 million as well. With the ticket prices over the two years that passed, both movies roughly earned the same amount of money with their predecessors. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol earned roughly $1.1 million / 50 million pesos from its overall gross of $3.9 million and 168 million pesos. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island settles in at the 5th place with $1.1 million / 47 million pesos, a big movie from its predecessor Journey to the Center of the Earth which just $755k in 2008. Local movies A Mother Story and My Cactus Heart roughly earned the same amount and if reports are to be believed both movies are modestly budgeted that even if their total box office are far below Star Cinema's standards, the studio could still see profit. David Fincher's The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo earned $209 K / 8.8 million pesos in its short two-week run in limited screens. Since the movie is rated R18, the movie lost a hundred possible theater to screen in because the biggest cinema chain in the country from SM malls have a policy of not exhibiting R18 movies. The box office is decent but not spectacular as last year an R-18 rated movie The Hangover earned $676,073 with almost the same amount of screens The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo here. But it should be noted that The Hangover 2 is a comedy unlike David Fincher's film which also runs for 2.5 hours thus limiting screen times as well. On a personal note, We have to commend the local distributor for screening The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo here with an R-18 rating and most importantly without cuts. They could easily downgraded the movie to an R-13 rating so SM can't screen (thus more money) but I appreciate that the film was screened the way the people behind it envisioned it.

Review: "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance"

Last Wednesday I attended the press screening of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance at Glorietta 4 Cinema 3. Thanks to Pinoyexchange and Warner Bros Pictures Philippines. You can also see this review at Official PEx Movie Reviews:

The first Ghost Rider was not exactly well-loved and Ghost Rider: Spirit Vengeance didn't do that much to elevate itself from the original but it showcases good action sequences and once again features an acting performance that you simply can't take your eyes off even if you want to.

Johnny Blaze (Nicholas Cage) isolates himself in an attempt to keep the demon inside him from hurting people even more but a monk Moreau (Idris Elba) tracks him down to ask his help to save a young boy from the Devil... and the possibility of getting rid of the curse forever.

Ghost Rider: Spirit Vengeance is directed by the team of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor famously known for the Crank movies. Having them on board benefited the movie as this team definitely knows how to shoot stylized action scenes effectively. The visual effects and stunt work are well-coordinated and seamlessly integrated.

However, the story is a hot mess. Yes, it goes to a darker route compared to the first one but it's still too all over the place. The movie still has its morbid sense of humor but there are moments when they try to hard to inject humor like in a quick montage showing pictures of the historic figures associated with evil where the punchline was flat.

The acting is solid as most of the supporting cast are good enough to prevent things from going overboard. But they all pretty much have to bow down to Nicholas Cage as the actor is so engaging to watch frame by frame. He still looks awkward in this role but the sheer audacity he gives in this performance is something that you really want to look away but you simply can't. The actor's screen presence pretty much holds the film together.

Ghost Rider: Spirit Vengeance deserves some props for improved action sequences and visual style but the attempt to have a darker tone didn't work that well. In the end though, it will still depend on how you perceive Cage's performance on whether you will enjoy this movie or not. 6.5 / 10

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: Feb. 25, 2012)

Despite some crazy chart action this week, Kelly Clarkson holds firm as Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) stays on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week. Clarkson's first two #1 singles (A Moment Like This and My Life Would Suck Without You) both spent 2 weeks at #1 also. Will Stronger be Clarkson's longest running #1 song? It won't be easy as there's intense competition for the top spot next week. So what are Stronger's competition for the top spot next week?

First Adele has two songs in the running for #1 next week. Yes, you heard me right TWO songs. Her last #1 Set Fire to the Rain which stays at #2 this week remains a potent competition to take the #1 position back but what's more surprising is that her first #1 and Billboard's 2011 Song of the Year Rolling in the Deep has an outside chance to return to #1! How is that even possible? Well during the Grammy Awards this year Adele, who won all 6 awards she was nominated for, performed the Record of the Year and Song of the Year winner Rolling in the Deep on stage that led to song to fly back on the upper rungs of the US iTunes (it's currently #2 right now) and the song is still receiving a solid amount of airplay so there's actually a chance that this song can go back to the spot. This week Rolling in the Deep leaps to #17 from #44 last week extending its chart run to 58 weeks! Meanwhile, Adele's second #1 Someone Like You climbs #11 from #22 last week on its 32nd week on the chart.

The next song in contention for next week's top spot is the one that I'm sure no one thought will go back to #1 again! Yesterday Billboard shocked chart geeks around the world when the late Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You re-entered the chart at #7. Aside from that two other classic Whitney Houston songs charted this week: I Wanna Dance With Somebody at #35 and The Greatest Love of All at #40. Why did it happened? Remember Billboard has rules that recurrents and old songs are not allowed to chart anymore (unless officially re-released to radio/commercially). Well, Billboard revised its policy on recurrent/old songs chart where they can now allow recurrents to chart as long as they have large enough points in sales or airplay to chart within the Top 50! Although the rules of songs 20 weeks and older that will chart below #50 will drop out and go recurrent still applies. You can read more about the change of policy here. It's an interesting development which is dividing chart geeks and music fans everywhere. Personally, I think it's fair enough since with the digital age, a media exposure or extraordinary events (like a celebrity passing) does result to people to rekindle or even perhaps discover an artist catalogue and in essence if the people support an old song again in droves then it's essentially a "hot" song of the moment. Let's see how it affects the chart activities in the long run. Anyway, I Will Always Love You is a contender for the top spot mainly because of the strength of its sales and resurgence in radio airplay in the wake of the untimely passing of Whitney. It will be an interesting result if I Will Always Love You goes back to #1 nearly two decades after it lead the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 consecutive weeks.

Adele's Grammy sweep and the untimely passing of Whitney Houston were the big music stories of the week which ultimately boosted their songs but Katy Perry will most likely steal the #1 spot as her new song Part of Me is currently the #1 song on US iTunes. This is Perry's new single from the upcoming re-released edition of "Teenage Dream" album. The song was performed during the Grammys and it climbed up on the iTunes chart and eventually surpassed both Adele and Whitney. The industry is expecting huge sales as the Grammys was watched by 40 million viewers in the US, the second most watched telecast ever. Adele and Whitney songs are expected to sell huge so what more Perry who managed to beat them on iTunes. Incidentally, Part of Me is actually #101 on the Billboard Bubbling Under just one shy spot of charting this week. If it was able to chart at #100 this week and climbed all the way to #1 that will be the record no one can beat as the first song to make the highest leap possible to #1. The current record holder for the largest leap to #1 is Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You which skyrocketed #97-#1.

So yeah five songs have a realistic shot to hit the #1 spot next week. This is an exciting chart race so stay tuned!

In other chart news, fun. and Janelle Monae's Super Bowl-boosted We Are Young is the best selling song of the week which catapulted the song from #41 to #3 this week. Meanwhile, another Super Bowl-boosted song enters the top 10 this week, Madonna's Give Me All Your Luvin' climbs 3 notches from #13 to #10 this week earning her 38th top 10 hit, the most for any artist. LMFAO who performed with Madonna during the Super Bowl also received some boost as their #1 hits Sexy and I Know It and Party Rock Anthem climbs #9-#4 and #20-#18.

The song that ended Rolling In The Deep's #1 run last year, Give Me Your Everything by Pitbull feat Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, drops out this week and goes recurrent after 45 weeks on the chart.

Review: "Hugo"

Last night I was at the Hugo press screening at Newport Mall, Resorts World Manila (my first time there and I was amazed but that's for another blog entry). Thank you to Pinoyexchange and Solar Entertainment. You can also see this review at the Official Pinoyexchange Movie Reviews page. "Hugo" opens tomorrow (Feb. 15).

Hugo is marketed as a children's tale ala Oliver Twist but what you will actually discover in this film will make you appreciate the art of film and the movie watching experience itself.

Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is a young boy who secretly lives in a train station's walls while managing to keep the clocks in the station working after his uncle disappears. Aside from taking care of the clocks, Hugo is working on an automaton his father (Jude Law) was trying to fix before he died. In order to fix the automaton, Hugo steals parts from a toy store but one day the owner, Georges (Ben Kingsley), catches him and takes away the notebook that tells how to fix the automaton. Georges' god-daughter Isabelle (Chloe Grace Moretz) helps Hugo get his notebook back but on their quest to fix the automaton they discover secrets that connects them together.

The first part of the movie has a slow pace and it will take awhile before you'll get a clear direction where the story is heading. There's a sense of disconnection between the movie's first and second half as the story took a different turn. The first half was building up the mystery of the automaton but how it actually turns out in the end didn't give the impact I thought it would have given the emphasis given to it earlier. The core mystery is actually engaging but the earlier events seems like it was just incidental, not that is a bad plot device but it's not well-integrated.

But that's my only quibble in the film as everything else worked out. Hugo, the character, is a representation of a broken person holding on to something that he believes could fix him. Sometimes we do no get what we expect or hope for but along the way we stumble into to things that will give us the experience of a lifetime. And without us knowing we fix our own issues when we help fix other people first. Buttefield did a good job portraying the titular character. His eyes speak a lot from the vulnerability and sorrow of being left alone to the hunger to find out the truth. It seems like you can literally see every flicker of emotion in his face.

Meanwhile, the back story of Georges is fascinating as the character is actually based on a biographical truth. Admittedly, I don't know who the actual Georges Melies is before this movie and learning about his story is both heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. The way the film treated his story was really good as we can clearly see the the story of a broken man who wants to forget his past but his passion overpowers any regret or remorse he ever felt. I was teary eyed when Georges had his moment of “victory”. Kingsley delivered a wonderful performance by letting us feel the character's emotions. Helen McRory also shined playing the role of Georges' wife. While I give credit to the amazing make up of aging McRory up, I'm impressed on how she can play a character way older than she actually is so naturally. There's not much depth with their god-daughter Isabelle but Moretz has a strong screen presence to make up for it. It's actually refreshing to see the young actress play a role so different from her best known but transgressive characters in Kick-Ass and Let Me In.

Hugo at its core is a love letter to film making. Scorsese's passion and affection for films is strongly felt here. The movie will help us appreciate films and the people behind it. I love how the film highlighted the creative process that happens when making movies. And perhaps the strongest element in Hugo is the movie's message of keeping the art of films alive and not just in the physical sense. Once you see the gorgeously-rendered sequences featuring the restored actual footage of early films you'll understand why film preservation is important.

The production design, cinematography and visual effects are impeccable and makes the film a marvel to watch. I'm not a fan of 3D movies but I love how Hugo used it. In this film, the 3D effect was not just a gimmick of throwing objects in your face but it emphasizes the construction of images and its amazing dimensionality. In almost every frame, you'll be amazed of the depth depicted in the images on screen. The design of the train station, the railway's interior and the clockworks are mesmerizing. The movie is set in a romanticized version of Paris in the 1930s and it's absolutely a pleasure to watch. Hugo is a visual splendor and Scorsese did a terrific job directing it.

Despite some of my issues in the story, I'll still give Hugo my best rating possible. Why? Simply because this film moved me and for me the best works are the ones that inspire you to do something. I don't consider myself a cinephile, I'm more of your average casual movie lover but after watching Hugo, it left me a desire to learn more about the art of films and its rich history. 10 / 10
