Longest 15 Seconds

So yesterday I was given a project at work to produce a 15 seconder plug for a client. It was a big pressure for me since it was my first time to be given a task to produce an audio-visual project. I've written scripts for various AVP projects before but to actually be the one in command to produce one is a first Yes, it's just 15 seconds but it was still difficult given the short notice and the immediate deadline. I have to think quickly and act fast. Thankfully my video editor Kuya Ice was great to work with and I learned a lot of stuff from him. Anyway, it was a good experience despite the nerve-wracking circumstance. The 15 seconder plug below took 4 hours to do! I'm very proud of the outcome ;)

Makeover

After 4 years of sticking with the same template I decided to change my blog skin today. I don't know what got into me but just I was exploring the blogger's new functions I thought of why not changing the look of my blog to freshen things up? Anyway, I'm not really a techie person so I still stuck with a simple design to make things easy for me. I like the look so far. I might make more changes soon as I tinker more with the layout haha. Would love to hear feedback with the forg files makeover ;)

Spotlight: It Will Rain - Bruno Mars

Yeah the song's lyrics is so cheesy [it's from Twilight afterall ;) ] but I really like this song a lot! Bruno Mars is just fantastic, he can sell any song. Admittedly It Will Rain is hard to sing along to because of the high notes hahaha! Bruno Mars performed this song t the X Factor USA this week and it made me love the song even more! Just let the clip below do the talkin'

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: December 3, 2011)

My predictions for the Billboard Hot 100 2011 Yearend chart is now up, you can check it out here

Rihanna logs a 4th week atop the Billboard Hot 100 as We Found Love (featuring Calvin Harris) continues to dominate the chart. We Found Love spent more weeks at the top spot than her last three #1 singles combined (Only Girl, What's My Name and S&M all spent a week at #1). Trailing behind Rihanna's track is a trio of non-movers LMFAO's Sexy and I Know It at #2, former #1 Someone Like You by Adele at #3 and David Guetta and Usher's collaboration Without You at #4. Rounding up the top 5 is Bruno Mars' It Will Rain which climbs #9-#5 this week. The song from the OST of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Down is Mars' 7th top 5

This week's top debut comes from Canadian rapper Drake as his second single from his sophomore album Take Care bows at #9. The track also features the current queen of the chart Rihanna. The next highest debut comes from the Glee cast as their Adele mash-up of Rumour Has It / Someone Like You debuts at #11. This is the show's first top 40 single this season and the 4th highest peaking single Glee track after their covers of Don't Stop Believin (#4) and Teenage Dream (#8) and the original Loser Like Me (#6). The mash up also ties the #11 peak of the Glee's cover of Forget You which featured Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Band Perry spends a full year on the chart as If I Die Young logs it 52nd week on the chart this week. The track is down from #30 to #41 this week.

My 2011 Billboard Hot 100 Year-end Chart Predix

With the release of the final chart eligible for Billboard 2011 Year-end chart I decided to make a prediction on what songs will likely make it to the Top 20 of the Year-end Hot 100 chart. Again the Billboard chart year is from December of the outgoing year to November of the incoming year (in this case December 2010-November 2011) the reason that Billboard does this is because it will give them enough time to produce the Billboard Year-end charts magazine to be released on the second week of December. The tabulation of the year-end chart will be based on the accumulated sales, audience impressions (airplay) and streaming points during the chart year. My prediction is just based basically on hunch taking into consideration the chart performance of each song. So without further adieu here's my prediction:

That's Love

Photo by Facebook user Reddie J

Amidst all the crazy political stuff and high profile crime cases dominating the news there's one story that captivated our hearts. When I first read about Lola Aurelia's story I was teary eyed. In a nutshell, she lost her husband Lolo Luis two weeks ago and from that on, every single day since his disappearance she roams the streets of Manila with a printed picture of his missing husband pinned at her dress (front and back) hoping to find her husband or at least someone who have seen her husband. Yes, it is something that feels like it came from a novel or a movie. But it was all real.

Thankfully, a man took a picture of her while looking for her husband and uploaded it on Facebook. Lola Aurelia's plight soon became viral and caught the attention of the media. Her story was just truly captivating and there's something about the elderly (like small kids) that pinches our heart. It was such a strong showcase of love that we can't help but feel for her and wish that she finds her husband soon.

Thankfully yesterday Lolo Luis was finally found. Admittedly, I choked up when I saw the news clip of their reunion. The way Lola Aurelia hugged and kissed her husband was so filled of relief and love. It was truly a wonderful moment to see. That is true love without a doubt.

Review: Happy Feet 2

Last Saturday (Nov. 19) I attended the press screening of Happy Feet 2 at SM Mall of ASIA's IMAX for Pinoyexchange's Official Movie Reviews:

For most of us Happy Feet reminds us of its cute dancing and singing penguins but the Academy award winning film also stood out because of its subtext that you wouldn’t expect to be touched on a movie targeted to kids. Happy Feet 2 further dove to a deeper direction but resulted to a weaker narrative but it is simply charming enough that you really wouldn’t mind the flaws.

Erik (EG Daily) is experiencing the same dilemma his father, Mumbles (Elijah Wood), had when he was young: he’s an outcast too but in a more difficult spot because he can neither dance like his father nor sing well like her mother Gloria (Pink). Mumble tries to comfort his son but he’s having a tough time to connect with him. Erik meets Sven (Hank Azaria) a penguin who can fly and Erik soon idolizes him much to Mumble’s dismay. Later on, a change in their natural habitat threatens the future of the entire emperor penguin community and it’s only up to Mumble along with Erik and some unlikely friends to save their kind.

Happy Feet 2 dealt with a lot of topics that include the interconnectivity of the ecosystem, environmental threats, false prophets, parenthood troubles, existentialism, growing up and finding your voice. Yes all of it. It’s a lot of topics to deal with and given the limited running time, hard to flesh out. The movie raises some good insights with each issue they touched upon but with too many big and complex ideas the narrative loses focus. The main story between Mumble and Erik was solid although due to the several things that were going on in the movie, their conflict was placed in the backseat a lot of time but thankfully it managed to have a strong resolution to make up for the lack of momentum. The environmental message they were trying to convey could have use some subtlety but the idea they presented about what could happen to a natural habitat was thought provoking. However, the way they resolved the penguin community crisis was too simple although it was understandable since this is still a kid’s movie plus it brought an awesome sequence that wisely uses the song “Under Pressure”.

There are subplots that were shortchanged like Sven’s since I thought the character would have a major connection to the narrative as a whole but the pay off was weak. I’m guessing the writers took one step back with Sven’s story because of its evangelical overtones but the way the character was introduced was so grand that it was a shame that he didn’t leave a bigger impact in the end. On the contrary, Happy Feet 2 was successful in elevating what could have been an unnecessary subplot of the krill with an existential crisis Will (Brad Pitt) and his buddy Bill (Matt Damon) and make it drive one of the movie’s strong point: the interconnectivity of everything and learning how to adapt. The movie could have simply place them as just comic relief but the krills’ part was substantial even if it’s loosely connected to the main story.

The technical side of the movie is top notch. While you can still enjoy the movie in regular 2D, the 3D experience will be worth the premium ticket price because of its amazing visuals. A lot of 3D movies released recently didn’t feel like 3D added anything to the experience but this one is immersive and not just in the throw-something-in-the-audience kind of way but it complemented the setting perfectly.

The musical numbers had lesser impact in this sequel compared to the first one but they were all entertaining. The “Under Pressure” sequence I mentioned earlier was the highlight of the movie because the execution was really spectacular. The voice cast was pretty great as well but Alecia Moore aka Pink (who replaced the late Britanny Murphy) as Gloria stood out in the musical numbers.

Happy Feet 2 is a gorgeous animated movie and definitely a visual delight. And despite suffering from an indecisive screenplay, Happy Feet 2 still shines because it’s downright entertaining and sometimes that’s just what we need. 8 / 10

Review: Annebisyosa

This album review is a piece I wrote for my friend Renan's website PhilCharts.com who provided the CD of this album for me to check out

Undoubtedly Anne Curtis is one of the biggest stars in the local entertainment today. With hit TV shows, blockbuster movies and several endorsements under her belt, Curtis is clearly making a mark in the industry and it’s not surprising that she’s expanding her multimedia presence with the release of her debut album Annebisyosa under Viva Records.

Like most local albums released recently, Annebisyosa went to the safe route by filling the album with revivals. Out of the album’s 8 tracks, six are revivals and two originals (one of which is actually the jingle of one of her endorsements). Eight tracks are too short for an album and I’m not sure that’s worth the 250 pesos you will shell out to purchase it. The best track is the original and lead single Tinamaan Ako which was fun to listen because of its goofy lyrics and easy-going vibe. Although Curtis sounded awkward with some of the Tagalog words in the lyrics. Unfortunately, while her revivals are not that bad overall (nothing cringeworthy) but given her limited vocal abilities and the uninspired arrangement of the tracks, her covers are just merely karaoke versions.

Unless you are really a big fan (or you want to have Anne’s autograph and picture during the promotional mall shows) there’s no strong reason to this check one out. To Anne Curtis’ credit she doesn’t take her new gig as a “singer” that seriously as evident with the tongue-in-cheek album title but for what is worth you can feel a sense of passion in her debut. But passion alone could not carry an album with mediocre song choices and run-of-the-mill production. 5 / 10

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: November 26, 2011)

Rihanna continues to dominate the Billboard Hot 100 as We Found Love spends a 3rd week atop the chart and it looks it will likely top the chart until the end of the year with no song strong enough on both sales and airplay threatening to take over the chart's top spot. However the big chart story this week is Taylor Swift debuting 3 songs simultaneously: If This Was a Movie at #10, Ours at #13 and Superman at #26. Although Ours is Swift's next single on country radio all these tracks were just released on iTunes, previously those songs were available only on a deluxe CD edition of her 2010 album Speak Now, available only on one retail outlet. It's quite impressive that despite the songs being a year old they still sold well on their iTunes debut.

David Guetta's Without You (featuring Usher) climbs to #4 becoming the French DJ's highest charting single surpassing last year's Sexy Chick (featuring Akon) which peaked at #5. Meanwhile, landing his 7th Top 10 single and 4th as the lead artist is Bruno Mars' It Will Rain which climbs three notches from #12 to #9. The track is from the OST of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 which opens in theaters this week.

It ain't over yet for the longest chart sitter If I Die Young by The Band Perry surges from #40 to #30 this week after receiving a boost from the recently concluded Country Music Awards wherein the song and the band won awards. The song is on its 51st week on the chart.

This is the last chart week counted for 2011 Billboard Yearend chart. The yearend chart will be released in mid-December so watch out for my Top 20 predictions in this blog soon.
