Philippine Box Office Roundup 16

It took a long time before Box Office Mojo updated its Philippine Box Office Index! Anyway, here's the last time I did the roundup and as always a couple of reminders and disclaimers:

  • The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
  • Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.

***

Kimmy Dora and The Temple of Kiyeme opened strong earning 95 million pesos in just two weeks easily outgrossing the original movie's gross of 80 million. The movie is now the 2nd best earning local movie this year next to UnOfficially Yours.

Other new releases are the kiddie flick Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and sci-fi Prometheus which both raked in solid numbers (53 million pesos and 41 million pesos, respectively. Bubble Gang movie spin off Boy Pick Up nabbed 25 million pesos which is ahead of other local releases this year such as A Mother's Story, My Cactus Heart and My Kontrabida Girl.

Rock of Ages opened soft with just 14 million pesos while smaller movies Lockout (7 million pesos) and SM exclusive Special Forces (2 million pesos) did poorly as expected.

Here's the Philippine Box Office list for 2012 as originally posted at Box Office Forums:

NOTE: In the latest Box Office Mojo report, The Avengers gross is now just $14.3 million down from $14.7 million. I wonder what happened there? <_<

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: June 23 2012)

Pop culture craze Call Me Maybe finally tops the Billboard Hot 100 this week unseating 8-week #1 Somebody That I Used to Know. Carly Rae Jepsen is now the third consecutive act to send their first chart entry to the top spot of the Hot 100. The first two were fun. with We Are Young followed by Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know. Incidentally, the featured artists of the said tracks Janelle Monae and Kimbra are also "first timers" on the Hot 100. This really has been a good year for new artists as those three songs topped the charts of UK, Canada and Australia as well. Call Me Maybe is also the first #1 from a Canadian artist since Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend topped the chart in 2007.

Elsewhere on the chart, Katy Perry nabs another top 10 hit as her new single Wide Awake leaps #19 to #9 on its 3rd week on the chart. Of the 12 only one official Katy Perry singles, the only song that missed the top 10 was Thinking of You which peaked at #29 in 2009.

This week's top debut is from Justin Bieber as All Around the World, an album cut from his upcoming set, bows at #22. Meanwhile, LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem extends its chart run to 64 weeks which is the 4th longest staying on the chart of all time tied with Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheats. Ahead of LMFAO's track are Adele's Rolling in the Deep & Jewel's You Were Meant for Me/Foolish Games (65 weeks), Lee Ann Rhimes' How Do I Live (69 weeks) and Jason Mraz's I'm Yours (76 weeks). I think LMFAO could surpass Adele and Jewel but beating Rhimes will be a tall order while beating Mraz is a long shot given that the Party Rock Anthem is already down to #45 on its way to recurrent status.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Review: Rock of Ages

Last Tuesday (June 12) I attended the press screening of Rock of Ages. Thanks to Pinoyexchange and Warner Brothers Philippines. This review is originally posted at Official PEx Movie Reviews

I'm not familiar with the musical Rock of Ages but for what is worth the concept is something that would definitely appeal to the mainstream audience so it's no surprise a movie adaptation happened. Featuring music that is well-loved by the general public and with committed performances from it cast, Rock of Ages is a crowd pleaser that aims nothing but to entertain.

Sherrie (Dancing with the Stars' Julianne Hough) is a small town girl who moves to Sunset Trip and meets Drew (Rebelde's Diego Boneta) who works for a popular night club Bourbon Room and he helps her get a job as a waitress. Sherrie & Drew pursue their Hollywood dreams together but they soon realize that the road to stardom is not as it easy as it seems. Meanwhile, Bourbon Room's owner Dennis (Alec Baldwin) stages a final performance of popular rock band Arsenal to raise money for the club's unpaid taxes which raises the ire of Patricia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), the conservative mayor's wife, who has a vendetta against Arsenal's frontman Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Staxx, who is leaving the band to pursue a solo career, meets someone on the night of the concert who will rock his world in ways he never thought.

There's nothing much to say to the plot as it tells a lot of stories at once but didn't fall into place. The core story between Sherrie and Drew is so predictable but the songs they perform make them watchable. The music is definitely the strongest asset of the movie and almost makes up for the poorly constructed screenplay. There are a lot of scenes in the movie that exist only to lead up to a musical number. For one, Mary J. Blige's subplot (and her character for that matter) is pointless and they could have gotten anybody for Blige's role but she sings all her songs magnificently and led one showstopping performance of Anyway You Want It.

The movie features a LOT of songs and it feels like for every 5 minutes a musical sequence comes in but despite that, Rock of Ages didn't feel exhausting to watch because you can feel the energy and enthusiasm on each performance. The cast performances are a mixed bag though. Hough and Boneta are charming on screen but their acting abilities are limited while their voices suit certain type of songs only. Their rendition of Don't Stop Believing is so-so but their mash up of More Than Words/Heaven was good. Baldwin looks and sounds awkward when he sings while Russell Brand's shtick is not my cup of tea but those two have great chemistry which made their Can't Fight This Feeling number a riot to watch. Catherine Zeta Jones is stuck with such a broad and dumb role that she couldn't do much about it but dial up the camp.

But the one who stole the show is Tom Cruise. I was surprised how he sounded good and how devoted he was to the character. Was it a believable take of a crazy, egoistic and aging rock star? I'm not sure actually but it's absoultely a fascinating performance. The movie lights up everytime he is on screen and his charm & skills were in full swing in I Want to Know What Love Is, a number so nutty but he sells the scene effectively.

Rock of Ages is definitely not for someone who is a music purist or a "true" rock fan but if you are someone who can tolerate over the top performances, silly broad characters and insane sequences that literally interprets a song's lyrics then you are in for one fun ride.

Rating: 7. 5 / 10

Philippine Box Office Roundup 15

Here is this week's Philippine Box Office Roundup, check out the previous roundup here

As always here are some notes and disclaimers:

***

The all star casting of Kristin Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron proved appetizing to moviegoers as Snow White and The Huntsman opened strongly earning 41.6 million pesos. The movie's gross already beat the previous Snow White movie Mirror, Mirror which earned 28.7 million during its run last March.

Also opening the same week is the latest Star Cinema romcom Born To Love You starring Coco Martin and Angeline Quinto. The movie earned a solid 29.7 million pesos beating the first week earning of the previous Star Cinema movie Every Breath You Take which took in 25 million pesos on its first week. The aforementioned movie crossed 50 million which is good enough for a movie that basically just had a 2 week run as Born To Love You took a lot of its screens this week.

Other new releases are Piranha 3DD (3.2 million pesos) and SM Cinemas exclusive Gone (1.2 million pesos)

Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at the BoxOffice.com forums:
