Year-end charts gathered by The Philippine Music Charts Thread team of Pinoyexchange.com

update #3: Channel [V] Philippines Year-end charts added
update #2: added MTV Philippines Year-end Top 10

update: added 99.5 RT Top 168 Year-end Chart and 102.7 Star FM's Yearend Top 20

* David Cook topped the Magic 89.9 year-end chart once again while Taylor Swift's Love Story topped RX Year-end chart. What's their common denominator? Already Gone placed second on both charts.

* Forgiveness by Wamdue Project tops Max FM Year-end Dance Countdown special while I Gotta Feeling topped both Mellow and Wave Year-end charts. Wave 89.1 yearend chart is incomplete because of unfamiliarity of the songs played and there were no DJs on board to introduce the songs. UPDATE: I Gotta Feeling also topped 99.5 RT's Year-end chart

*Rico Blanco's Antukin topped NU 107's Countdown 107 while Agawan Base by Peryodiko was the #1 song at UR 105.9. Nobody by the Wonder Girls meanwhile clinched the #1 spot at Energy FM's yearend countdown. UPDATE: Nobody also topped Star FM's yearend top 20

UPDATE: Single Ladies topped MTV Philippines on the other hand 21 Guns topped Channel [V] Philippines year-end countdown

Decade in Review: Five Things About Philippine TV

I'm a big TV watcher as some of you may know but when I was writing my Favorite shows of the decade post I was contemplating if I should place a Pinoy show but sadly I really couldn't think of any show that grab I absolutely loved. You know, a "can't miss" show or even a "sentimental favorite" but nothing. And I've watched a lot of local TV as well. What went wrong? When I think sbout Pinoy TV this decade, I remember the "issues" more than the shows and with that I present to you my five observations of Philippine TV this decade.

5. Death of Sitcoms

- This decade failed to produce any memorable sitcom. We don't have a Home Along Da Riles, Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanat or Ober Da Bakod. On the current TV schedule, we only have three sitcoms left. What went wrong with the Pinoy sitcoms this decade that the network just didn't treat the genre seriously and they only see sitcoms as a vehicle for a star or a show to place their exclusive talents to prevent them from jumping networks. There were no stories with the sitcoms, heck, some even were lazy to have "characters" with the trend in the mid decade of sitcoms having jokes on the personal lives of the actors.

4. Asian dramas invasion

It started with IBC 13' Amazing Twins but that show didn't hit the ground but when ABS CBN launched Meteor Garden in 2003 that changed Philippine TV land scape. If we though Latin soaps were already short, then the Taiwanese/Chinese/Korean soaps were shorter and it somehow influenced some of our Philippine soaps to have shorter runs. At some point, the invasion kinda got ridiculous with too many asianovelas on the TV schedule as if the networks acquired all the shows they could buy even the not so good ones. Don't get me wrong, I like some of those Koreanovelas/Chinovelas but there was time that we got saturated with it. These days though at least there is a balance already with local and acquired shows.

3. Remakes/Revival/Reimagining galore

Komiks to TV, Movies to TV, acquiring rights of Latin and Asian soaps to adapt. I consider this a bad trend because if we keep on reviving/remaking/adapting stuff it sends the message that our TV industry is to lazy to come up with a their original story. I often read most of our remakes pale in comparison

2. "After this..." scheduling

Today’s TV schedule there is no more definite time schedule especially the primetime slot. The networks schedule their programs as one package deal for ABS CBN Primetime Bida and Telebabad for GMA 7. And when you see plugs the ads will say “[show A] pagkatapos ng [show B]”and what is the schedule of show b? “Pagkatapos ng (*insert news program here*)”. The reason for this absurd scheduling? The networks hope that a viewer will stay in tuned not just for one but a series of show Walang Lipatan. But this type of scheduling there lays the problem; the essence of time is diminished among the viewers. Hey how can we know the real time if the schedule is that, tantyahan? This kind of scheduling shows exactly why we have this so-called "Filipino time", we can't start on time for crying out loud.

1. The intense and oftentimes ridiculous Network Wars

Sure competition is fun but the network war this decade has escalted to a whole new insane level. In the case of the Kapuso vs. Kapamilya, their rivalry instead of improving the quality of programming has resulted to making their competition a form of entertainment. Yes, the network war spices up the otherwise bland local TV scene but is this what the stations could only offer? The television is a powerful medium and must be used in the proper way and not just a vehicle to boost egos. We have the talent and I hope we could maximize it. I'm not saying we should have a TV model like the ones in the US as I'm very much okay with the current soaps domination, my beef is that I hope the networks could find ways to revolutionize the shows. I just feel like we are not moving forward at all.

***

Although majority of this blog post is full of rants, I would like to cite that news and current affairs of Philippine TV produces a lot of great shows like I-Witness, Reporter's Notebook, The Correpondents among others. No wonder the local shows that consistently gets the awards abroad are the news and current affairs ones since the production of those shows are excellent.
And I must the breakout success of TV5 this year with some of their shows is for me a good sign that could possible a game changer on the Philippine TV landscape. We just have to stay tuned.

Decade in Review: Ten Favorite Movies of the Decade

I'm not a big watcher of movies as I am of television so I'll just post my favorite movies base from the limited films I've watched over the decade. I know I still have to watch a lot of films, I will improve my movie-watching time by next decade. Maybe If I watched enough films of this decade, I will revisit this post and make new rankings and probably expand it to 20 or even 50. Hopefully it will happen. Anyway here is my list :D

10. 28 Days Later (2002)

- Very exciting thriller that I watched in one of my classes in college

9. Shrek 1 & 2 (2001 & 2004)

The first time I watched it I was very impressed on how they freshened up the fairy tale story. The sequel even surpassed the first one. Sadly, I felt the third installment took a nose dive, quality wise.

8. Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo (2006)

- Best local romantic-comedy this decade for me. The lines were witty and the progress of a relationship was well executed

7. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

- An adorable family movie that had realistic emotions from a family under an over-the-top situation.

6. . Love Actually (2003)

- Such a sweet film and I love how various kinds of love was depicted here, and it's not just about the romantic stuff

5. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

- Very disturbing film that had very good depiction of the effects of drug addiction

4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

- One of the best quirky stories I've watched this decade. Kate Winset was so great here

3. Magnifico (2003)

- This local film was a suprise success back in the day. This movie is like Pay it Forward but 10x better for me :)

2. Kill Bill Volume 1 (2003)

- Breathtaking fight scenes!

1. Ratatouille (2007)

I love Ratatouille because of the conflict it presented: Wanting to be something that you are not supposed to be there and choosing to go against tradition because of something that your heart tells you that is right for you. Yeah it's a bit extreme to use a rat that wants to be a chef but I like what Remy represented, he is the total outcast who want to challenge the tradition. The animation is superb the fact that I really got grossed out with rat colony (especially when they fell from the roof!) shows how realistic and polished the animation is. And the in the end is full of wisdom, just captures the whole essence of the movie. The best and most sophisticated script for me of all the Pixar films.

Goodbye 2009 (and the decade!)

Today is the last day of 2009 AND the decade of the 2000s. And for the 1000th time how time flies, right? I started the decade as a graduating elementary student and I will end it as a person working for this third company in less than two years. I thank God for all the blessings the past year AND decade , and also for all the challenges that I came along the way. I learned a lot. the past 10 years. This year and decade was a transition stage. I realized how hard it is to grow up and move on. But its worth the ride and I'm very excited of the future ahead. I wonder what's in store for me? :)

Decade in Review: My Top 10 Favorite US TV Shows

Compiling this list is a difficult thing to do. The #1 show was no question. But the rest of the top 10 were difficult to rank. Anyway, there are some shows here that started in the 90s but as for this list I will only judge it on the episodes aired this decade. I would like to emphasize this is a list of my "favorites" not what is "best". Since well I'm not in the authority to judge which is best or not, plus my list is limited to the shows I've watched. I know shows like The Sopranos, Friday Night Lights, and Mad Men are well reviewed but I haven't seen enough episodes of those shows to judge it [but I will watch those shows someday]. If you look over the list , you would easily figure out that I'm really into comedy/dramedy/lighthearted shows in general. There are some shows that I absolutely loved when it started but as it went on I got tired of watching it, so no Desperate Housewives, Prison Break, and Heroes here. There are shows here who had a brief run because it was canceled early on. Before I present to you my top 10, I'll cite some close calls in the top 10, I wanted to expand the list but then I thought that limiting it top a top 10 is more challenging and would really force me to be rational in someway (and well I sort of violated it since there is a tie somewhere in the top 10). Anyway, here are the shows that didn't make my Top 10:
Jack and Bobby (2004-2005)
A very engaging young adult drama that only lasted a season.

Friends (1994-2004)
Yes, best years were in the 90s but I really enjoyed seasons 7 and 8 that aired this decade.

Will & Grace (1998-2006)
I didn't like how it ended with what happened with Will & Grace but the antics of Jack and Karen consistently delivered the big laughs no matter what.

Alias (2001-2006) and 24 (2001-present)
Both exciting and thrilling shows to watch, I absolutely loved the early seasons but I failed to catch on the later seasons and I felt that I couldn't justify well placing them in the top 10 if I haven't watched all episodes.

House (2004-present)
I love Hugh Laurie's performance here and also Wilson but the show being formulaic made it less engaging to me compared to the other shows

7th Heaven (1996-2007)
A sentimental favorite, the show was messy during its last four seasons but I will always be fond of this show because I always watch the Holy Week marathon of this show on Studio 23. 2010 will be the first Holy Week without a 7th Heaven marathon, I somehow feel sad about that fact.

Scrubs (2001-present)
I love this show because I could relate with J.D's wild imagination although the show went on for too long that it kinda lost its charm over time but I still consistently enjoy watching it.

Pushing Daisies (2007-2008)
I adore this show! The pilot of Pushing Daisies is one of my all time favorite pilots. It almost reached the top 10 but was bumped down because that shows at #9 and #10 (which coincidentally were launched at the same time with Pushing Daisies) had stellar second seasons that boosted it.

And now my list of my Top 10 Favorite US TV Series of the Decade.

10. The Big Bang Theory (2007-present)

There is nothing really groundbreaking with this show, this is your typical episodic traditional sitcom but this show entertains me a lot thanks to its charming cast. I’ve rooted for this show since Day 1 and I’m glad that this is now on its way to becoming a ratings powerhouse. Jim Parson's Sheldon is one of my all time favorite TV characters, his character is so effective that sometimes I think I will instantly cringe everytime he opens his mouth. The show started as somehow show laughing at the nerds but now the show excellently transitioned as a show laughing with the nerds.

9. Chuck (2007-present)

Despite airing just two seasons (season 3 starts in Janaury) this show effectively mixed comedy, action-adventure and romance into one truly enjoyable show. The cast are perfect and the spy adventures are very thrilling and not shallow at all despite the comedic tone of the show. And Chuck and Sarah will-they-or-won't -they romantic tension is nicely developed. The Buy More crew have their own mini-show but they don't interrupt the story but serves as a nice comic break in between the thrilling missions of Chuck, Sarah, and Casey.

8. Futurama (1999-2003)

This adult animated program showcases a morbid but very entertaining take of the future. The society that this show depict is so crazy but there underlies a subtle take on what could really happen in the future base on current events but no in the preachy or in-your-face way. And what's great about this unlike other animated show, Futurama is not prone with continuity errors. The show was canceled in 2003 but this year it was announced that the show will be revived and will air new episodes starting next year! Can't wait to see Planetary Express deliver the laughs again

7. Lost (2004-present)

- The show started as "Survivor: The Series" type of show but it evolved into becoming a truly mind-bending and captivating show. The show has now become a science-fiction drama and I admit I'm not really into science fiction in general but Lost successfully blended the science fiction with the human drama so even though you don't exactly understand what the heck is going on, you still want to know the answers, you want to know what would happen to the characters. Sometimes this show could be confusing but out-of-the-blue the show would introduce something groundbreaking that would pull your interest in. The show will end next year and I'm very excited how it will conclude

6. The Office (2005-present)

- The best asset of this show is the cast. It's one of the best ensemble on TV right now that even minor characters like Phyllis, Creed, Toby, Meredith etc have their moments and I couldn't imagine the show without every single one of the Office staff. Jim and Pam's relationhip is one of the best developed TV romances. The show also succesfully maximized the mockumentary format of the show to deliver the best comedic moments of the show.

5. How I Met Your Mother (2006-present)

- I love the non-linear style of storytelling of this show, its not easy to pull it off but they are doing it very well. They were able to expand the show’s story beyond the limits of the title and make it work well. Kudos also to the cast because one of the assets of this show is the great chemistry of the actors in it.

4. Spongebob Squarepants (1999-present)

Even though I’m no longer a kid, I still enjoy watching the shenanigans of Spongebob and friends (even on repeat viewing or dubbed in our local language!). There's no wonder this cartoon is very popular not just with kids but with adults as well because the show is very enjoyable to watch. When I watch the show with my one-year old nephew, he is not the only laughing but me as well.

3. Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)

My sentimental favorite is Gilmore Girls. I first watched this show because I have A BIG CRUSH on Alexis Bledel and her character Rory is so adorable but over time I fell in love with the quirky town of Stars Holl. The first three seasons of GG was such a joy to watch. I admit the show’s plot got draggy during its last two season but I’m pleased that even it had a de-facto series finale, they left the show in a good note with an episode that went back to its roots.

2. (tie) Survivor (2000-present) / The Amazing Race (2001-present)

I was contemplating for awhile which reality show should be higher but then I realized I love both shows equally so why not let them share the spot. Even though bothshows already aired more than a dozen seasons I’m still hooked each season, watching how the castaways and team compete to win the top prize. I love the dynamics of Survivor, it's not an easy game as it needs a good combination of physical, tactical and social skills while hands down the logistics in the production of The Amazing Race is top notch. I could see both shows still succeeding in the next decade.

1. Arrested Development (2003-2006)

Justify Full
My favorite show this decade is ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. The absurdity of the Bluth family is so hilarious and I just love the format of this show especially the end part where they have “a preview” of what’s next. I like how they are very keen on continuity, when there’s a callback in episode I feel so delighted. The subtle joke and sight gags are very witty. Just remembering some of the scenes of the show makes me cringe (I’m thinking about the scenes of the “Literal Doctor” right now). They even make product placements funny and not annoying. Such a shame this show was not a hit but still I’m glad that it had three excellent seasons and a nice series finale.

Chart Recap 2009 Year-end Charts 1

Update: to see part 2: click here

The first set of the year-end charts for 2009. U92 had a year-end chart although it only covered the last quarter of the year when the station existed so don't be surprised with the songs that made it. Meanwhile, it's 12:8 on the Yearend Edition of the MYX Hit Chart for 2009, in favor of foreign videos. That's a minor surprise given that the presence of the foreign music videos compared to OPM music videos this year. Sarah Geronimo is the top OPM act in MYX for the fourth time with You Changed My Life (#6 in the MYX Hitchart Yearend). She was the over-all #1 last year with A Very Special Love. She also held the Top OPM video in 2003 with Forever's Not Enough at #11 and in 2004 with How Could You Say You Love Me at #4. This year ended the four-year reign of OPM videos in MYX with the top 5 dominated by foreign music videos with artists in their teens. Britney Spears is the only artist present on this year yearend MYX Hitchart that was also part of the first ever MYX Yearend Hitchart in 2002. Spongecola and Hale have been consistenly charting in the MYX Yearend chart since 2005. Also included, is the RX 93.1'a OPM Year-ender and Awards with Kyla bagging several awards. Love Story by Taylor Swift topped two year-end charts in MYX and iFM. Will it be the same case for other year-end charts? Let's wait and see.

Here are now the year-end charts for MYX, U92, RX 93.1 (OPM) and 93.9 iFM as gathered by the Philippine Music Charts Thread of Pinoyexchange (visit the thread here)

Decade in Review: The Websites that Mattered

Woah, this decade is coming to an end. This is a special decade for me since this is the first decade that I am fully aware of. Sounds silly? I was born in the late 80s and was a kid in the 90s with only clear memories of the late 90s. I was 12 turning 13 when we welcomed Year 2000 and I must say I was old enough to observe things haha. The 00s is clearly a decade of transition. And major factor of the change is the rise of the Internet. I was an Internet noob from 2000- early 2004. I only became an Internet literate when I entered college. And boy the world wide web is such an interesting place. I'm now an Internet addict haha. But I'm not as proficient as other people because well I'm too lazy for those techie stuff haha. As an ordinary Internet surfer I present to you the websites that mattered to me this decade. This are the websites that clearly defined this decade of the digital era:

5. The Social Networking/Blogging Sites

Of course there's no way I could ignore the impact of the social networking sites from Friendster to Myspace to Multiply to Plurk to Facebook to Twitter to Tumblr and add to the blogging sites like Blogger, Livejournal and Wordpress among others. We can't deny that these websites made a huge impact in our lives this decade. These sites helped us connect and reconnect with friends and acquaintances. These sites gave us the medium to express ourselves and share parts of our lives. The evolution of these websites is so fast that I don't know know what to expect in the next decade but what I'm sure these websites would definitely help up bridge the gap.

4. Wikipedia

My favorite timekiller haha. While this website SHOULD NOT BE used as the main source of information for research and other important matters (people please READ books and published materials when it comes to serious stuff), Wikipedia definitely is a wide resource of information from the shallow to the mundane to anything and everything. Every once in awhile you could stumble into an entry that is very well written and informative with several links backing it up. And yes I do get a kick out of reading entries which are obviously fabricated. But definitely surfing to this website you could learn and discover a lot of stuff. I consider this site as a starting point where it could lead you to somewhere more comprehensive. It is just that some people abuse this website too much.

3. YouTube

YouTube made stars from our very own Charice to the current worldwide best seller Susan Boyle! That alone shows how YouTube became an important website of the decade. Everybody who knows the basics of the Internet knows how this website works where there are several videos stored. This site has become the go-to place to catch funny videos, music videos, outrageous scenes in life and some people even use this site as blog (now known as vlog or video-blog). This is I guess the world's most favorite timekiller haha.

2. Yahoo

I'm very sure that most of us had our first e-mail in Yahoo. I do. My first ever e-mail was jba52000@yahoo.com I still open that e-mail every once in awhile. Yahoo! covers a lot of stuff, they have news from anything and everything to games to kill time. Plus there's Yahoo! Messenger which replaced IRC (remember that thing?)

1. Google

The influence of this website is best summed up as the phrase "Google it" has become part of our everyday vocabulary. This our go-to website for our "query" needs. Websites fight it out to be on top of Google searches. Google Adsense has become very influential in the blogging world. Google homepage is so simple yet so powerful and that clearly shows that this website is the one that mattered this decade.

To all who visits and reads my blog let me greet you a Merry Christmas (and well if you don't celebrate it Happy Holidays!). I had a nice Christmas eve, my family was complete and everybody is in good shape. If you ask me what my Christmas wish, I just want my family particularly my parents to be spared from any life threatening illness. This year both nanay and tatay had health scares, although nothing grave but it still it freaked me out. I hope everyone will have a nice Christmas day. Anyway, watch out for my Decade /2009 in review blog posts in the coming days. :D
