Philippine Music Charts Thread Midyear Recap 2011

PinoyExchange.com's Philippine Music Charts Thread compiled all charts posted there Linkfrom January to June this year, 2011, and formulated a pointing system to make a summary of the top songs for the past six months. Well, this is not really something official or could really say the top songs in the country ala Billboard since we only covered the charts of the radio stations/music channels that were posted there and mostly came from Metro Manila stations although we have some provincial charts that were posted on the thread but not as many as the ones from Metro Manila. This list could be somewhat a good glimpse what songs were popular this year so far. You could see the Midyear Tallies of 2008 here , 2009 here and 2010 here. As always, kudos to erzo, the thread's resident mathematician for tabulating the charts. So without further adieu, here are the results:

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: August 6,2011)

The party is not yet over for LMFAO as "Party Rock Anthem" continues its chart dominance at the Billboard Hot 100 as it stays for a 4th straight week at #1. Closing in the gap is Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" which ascends #3-#2 this week and is thisclose on getting her 5th straight #1 album from her sophomore set "Teenage Dream". The only other artist to achieve five #1 songs on the same album is Michael Jackson where his album "Bad" spawned the #1 hits "Man in the Mirror", I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Dirty Diana." Can Katy Perry pull it off? Let's wait and see.

Bruno Mars earns his 6th top hit Bad Meet Evil's "Lighters" featuring his vocals climbs #17-#10 this week and has a great shot to get inside the top 5 as the song is currently #2 on US iTunes. Mars' six top 10 hits are equally divided with his solo songs ["Just The Way You Are" (#1) , "Grenade" (#1) and 'The Lazy Song" (#4)] and featured tracks [B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" (#1), Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" (#4) and now Bad Meet Evil's "Lighters" (#10)] So far Mars' hits are either #1 or #4 hits, will "Lighters" be a #1 hit or #4 hit, or will it get a different peak? Let's wait and see.

"Lighters"blocked Britney's "I Wanna Go" to #11. Britney fans should wait for next week to see Britney finally having three singles from one album reaching the top 10

Personal favorites "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People is up to #29 while "California King Bed" by Rihanna finally cracks the top 40 at #37 after 12 weeks on the chart.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers' lead single from their new album '"The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" is this week's top debut at #38, this is their first chart appearance since 2006.

Last week's top debut "Skyscraper" drops all the way down to #51 from #10 last week. Had it dropped to #50 only, Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" would have been bumped off the chart to recurrent status but that didn't happen as the song maintains the longest chart sitter crown with 48 weeks on the chart.

Katy Perry's "Firework" drops out this week (and is now relegated to the recurrents chart) after spending 39 weeks on the chart and 4 weeks at #1. Also saying goodbye on this week's charts are The Script's "For The First Time" (29 weeks, peak: #23), Ke$ha's "Blow" (26 weeks, peak: #7) and Beyonce's "Run The World (Girls)" (13 weeks, peak: #29).

Nostalgia Fit: "Buwan" by Cacai Velasquez

Humor blogger Professional Heckler had a mini-Twitter discussion last night about OPM one hit wonders and I gave out several answers, some got retweeted which were "Larawang Kupas" by Jerome Abalos and "Itsumo" by Dice & K9 then I suddenly remembered Cacai Velasquez, she's kinda considered a one hit wonder because she had one phenomenal song which was "Forever Blue" but she had minor hits as well and one of these is "Buwan". "Buwan" is a song that takes me back in the day when I started listing down radio countdowns because it's one of the hit songs on Kool 106 OPM Top 20 countdown back then (my chart geekdom started at Kool 106 daily countdowns in the 90s). Anyway, "Buwan" is such a great OPM song and it makes me miss the days where OPM produced quality songs, OPM is lousy these days sad to say and I hope OPM can reclaim its former glory and release more original songs!

In case you forget (or you're not aware at all) here's Cacai Velasquez's "Buwan"

Spotlight: Disney Junior

I have a serious case of LSS (Last Song Syndrome) with Disney Junior's theme song! Disney Junior is the rebranded Playhouse Disney, a cable channel for toddlers and since I have a two year old nephew, he practically watches the channel everyday. Anyway, here's the very catchy theme song of the channel which my nephew is already singing (where the chorus parts at least)

I'm going where the sky is bluer
I'm going where the magic begins
I'm going to Disney Junior
Come on everyone
Join in

Disney Junior
Disney Junior
Where the magic begins

I'm going where the rockets blast off
I'm gonna zip around beneath the trees
I'm going where the pirates cast off
for high adventures on the seven seas

I can think of new ideas
I can chug around all day
I can build the words and see the
Letters turn into the things i say

My Last Hurrah at Cinemalaya 2011

I watched a lot of Cinemalaya films this year and I'm so happy at that. The timing was perfect because Cinemalaya had screenings this year at Greenbelt 3 (more accessible to me) and I recently had a midyear bonus at work (so I can afford to watch a lot of films). All in all I watched all the four films in the Directors' Showcase, 4 films under the New Breed Full Length category, One NETPAC movie and 5 Shorts (Short Features Group B). I already shared my thoughts last week for the films Busong, Bisperas, Bahay Bata, Isda and NETPAC film Nono. So today I'll the other films I was able to see on the last few days of Cinemalaya 2011. (By the way congratulations to the winners!)

Short Features Group B

"Hanap Buhay" is the best in this set (too bad I wasn't able to catch the Group A which I heard a lot of rave reviews) it was simple and funny with a clever twist in the end. "Immanuel" futuristic concept is intriguing and I think it could have work better as a full length film. "Hazard" is gripping and a little disturbing. I didn't like "Oliver's Apartment" and "Debut".

Niño by Loy Arcenas [New Breed]

"Niño" is about a family where the older generation yearn on the years when they were rich and famous but have to face the reality that it has already faded and they could never reclaim past glories. The film started a little slow but picked up as it progresses especially the last part where the execution was hair rising. The script is mostly solid although I found Racquel's son a nuisance, the film would still work without his character.
9 / 10

Amok by Lawrence Fajarado [New Breed]

"Amok' is set in Pasay Rotonda and from there we take a look of the lives of the people there but an incident will changed the lives of people. I'm very impressed with the direction, camera shots, logistics of this film, I'm not really particular with camera shots and angles but I just can't help but be impressed what this film pulled off technically! The execution was masterfully done. This is a difficult film to do but they pulled it off magnificently. I think the story needs more cohesion because the stories of the characters are literally and figuratively all over the place, there are characters that don't leave any impact at all but nevertheless the climax was just riveting. Plus points to that catchy street rap song that opened the film.
9 / 10

Patikul by Joel Lamangan [Directors' Showcase]

"Patikul" is a typical Joel Lamangan film with its social commentary tone but I like the topic about a small elementary school in Patikul which is struggling because they are in the middle of the conflict between the military and Muslim rebels. It has the heart but something about the film doesn't feel authentic (maybe because the film was shot not really in Sulu but somewhere here in Luzon which is understandable given the hazard of shooting there).
8 / 10

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank (The Woman in the Septic Tank) by Marlon River and Chris Martinez [New Breed]

Eugene Domingo brought the house down! Really great performance from her especially love the "three kinds of acting" part. The story's alright, I like how they point out the flaws of a misguided Pinoy Indie filmmakers. The "dream" sequences started fun but it went for too long that it became a little weary. And I found the ending abrupt but the coda was gold.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: July 30, 2011)

"Party Rock Anthem" maintains its chart supremacy as the song tops the Billboard Hot 100 for a 3rd straight week while "Give Me Everything" stays at #2 and "Last Friday Night" and "Rolling in the Deep" swaps places at #3 and #4 with "Super Bass" static at #5.

The top debut comes from Demi Lovato as her single 'Skyscraper" enters the chart at #10 to give Lovato's highest charting solo single eclipsing "Here We Go Again's" peak at #15 in 2009. Lovato's highest charting song however is her duet with Joe Jonas "This is Me" from Disney's TV Movie "Camp Rock" which peaked at #9 in 2007.

Indie band Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" climbs #46 to #38 this week and this song is very refreshing as it's sounds different from the current chart toppers. I never though this type of song would breakthrough on the Hot 100 today but I have it feeling it will continue its ascend on the succeeding weeks and break the top 20. Let's wait and see

Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger's "Right There" (feat 50 Cent) is up #52 to #39 this week and sees Nicole finally getting a solo of hit of her own after several attempts. Her first attempt of a solo career back in 2007 didn't succeed with both singles "Whatever U Like" and "Baby Love" failed to chart that led to her supposed debut album 'Her Name is Nicole" getting shelved. Nicole already gained chart success in the UK with singles "Poison" and "Don't Hold My Breath" peaking at #3 and #1, respectively and let's see if she can achieve this kind of success in the U.S but looks she's off to a promising start for her second stab for a solo career.

Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson's "Don't You Wanna Stay" re-enters the chart at #48 after falling off on its 26th week on the chart a couple of weeks ago. The song was able to make it back to the main chart despite going recurrent mainly because of rise in airplay.

Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" drops #41 to #50 on its 47th week on the chart, this is likely the final Hot 100 chart week for the song as it will move on to recurrent status next week but this is an impressive run for a song that I never thought that would become a big hit because of its title.

Review: Nono

I caught "Nono" by accident, I was supposed to watch "Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank" last night at Greenbelt but once again the tickets are sold out! Then again I thought that since I was already there and I really wanted to watch a movie after work so I decided to watch the other Cinemalaya film that is screening at that time and it was "Nono". That was the first time that I heard about this movie, I didn't notice that there's a film called "Nono" in this year's Cinemalaya film festival because it's not part of the New Breed or Shorts categories instead it belongs to NETPAC premieres. Anyway, missing out "Septic Tank" for the second time around turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I really enjoyed "Nono", a heartwarming story about Toto, a boy born with a cleft-lip (in Pinoy vernacular "ngongo") who wanted to join his school's declamation contest. Despite his speech impediment, Toto is not backing down as he strives to prove that he can do it. It may sound like your typical 'underdog' movie but this film does not emotionally manipulate the viewers to root for the kid because the script does not really put him under emotional torture. Sure his classmates laughs when he attempted to sing, sure there are kids who mocked him and yes there's even a bully (that became a friend later on) but they are all pretty harmless. Plus, Toto was never portrayed as a victim, he showed wisdom beyond his age but you could still the kid in him, a determined kid that will win your heart. Another thing I like about this film is the friendship Toto had with his deaf friend Ogoy and frienemy Badong. You could feel the children's innocence in every scene that these kids are in. Seeing them will make you remember of your childhood friends and classmates. I was particularly moved with Ogoy's story and how Toto & Badong looked after him. There's a scene in the film that really got me when former tormentor Badong carried Ogoy who fell asleep outside the school waiting for Toto to come out (Ogoy is an out-of-school-youth who sneaks in the school to help Toto but he got caught at that time).. Major kudos for finding these terrific kid actors. The adult actors also did fine, they gave great support to the kids especially Toto's wise-cracking supportive single mom Glenda. She had great rapport with the kids and his scenes with Toto felt natural and you would feel the love & support of a mom who motivates his son to never let his disability stop him from living the life he wants. I was all smiles while watching the film, it was the perfect film to cap off a long day at work. 9/10

And as luck would have it after Nono's screening there was a 'talkback" where the film's writer/director Milo Tolentino and some of the movie's cast were there to interact with the audience (too bad the kid who played Toto was not there). I learned more stuff about the film like the fact that the script has already won a grant from the Script Development Fund of the Busan Film Festival in South Korea.

Anyway, learn more about "Nono" at their official website at http://nonothemovie.com/
"Nono" will still have two screenings at Cinemalaya this week and I hope you could watch this delightful film because I assure you this is a good one.

Spotlight: Harry Potter & Cinemalaya

So in the last few days I was able to watch FIVE films and four of those I watched in a single day, that's a personal record haha! Anyway, I watched Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and 3 Director's Showcase films and 1 New Breed film at the 2011 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. Here are my thoughts (or mini-reviews) of the aforementioned films:

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2

I liked it, I love the "finale feeling" it really had. I admit the battle of Hogwarts was not as epic as imagined it when I was reading the book but in a way I liked it because the movie really focused on the intense confrontation of Harry Potter and Voldemort. I also like how they treated Snape's back story, that was good although it was a little too fast. My favorite HP character is Neville and he really shined in this film so I was very pleased. I admit I didn't like the epilogue maybe because I was also not a fan of the book epilogue too (I felt that it was too contrived) but I understand why it has to be there and I can pass by that. Anyway, I know it was hard to adapt the book be 100% faithful but the choices they made were good enough to produce a finely-crafted film. And gotta give kudos to the Harry Potter franchise, to maintain majority of the cast and improving in quality for the last decade is such an amazing feat. One day I'll collect home videos of each movie to complement my book collection :)

8.5 / 10

Busong (Palawan Fate) by Auraeus Solito [Director's Showcase]

I was supposed to watch "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank" starring Eugene Domingo but its Greenbelt screening yesterday was already sold out! So I watched this film instead starring Alessandra De Rossi as Punay, a Palawan native who was born with wounds on her feet and because of that she cannot step on her feet and her brother carries her to find a person who could cure her sister and along the way they met people with interesting stories to share. The story is all about the culture and practices of native Palawan people and the film did a great job of setting the atmosphere right, it really felt authentic from the language they used, the practices, the gestures, the customs and a lot more. The pacing is slow and the story could be confusing at times because it would shift from random flashbacks to present time, from one character to another but I guess it was intended that way. The cinematography of this film is just impressive, I couldn't help but utter "wow" during some shots. I've seen 3/4 of the Directors' showcase films and I think this could be the frontrunner for the top prize.

9 / 10

Bisperas (Eve) by Jeffrey Jeturian [Director's Showcase]

After attending the Christmas Eve procession and mass, the Aguinaldo family discovered that they were robbed while they were out and that incident ignited lingering emotions and sentiments they have been keeping from each other. I admit I was a little disappointed with the film, I enjoyed it but it felt too plain for a Jeturian film. I like how realistic his treatment was with the issues they have for each other and I believe at one point or another the Aguinaldo family issues are something we all could relate to with our own respective families. The film is all about how breaking the "elephants in the room" is so complicated that we sometimes just learn how to coast along. The performances were fine but nothing exceptional. All in all, it was solid film but it really didn't leave a lasting impact to me.

7 / 10

Isda (Fable of the Fish) by Adolfo Alix, Jr. [Director's Showcase]

Well, this is the story of a woman (Cherry Pie Picache) who gives birth to a fish. This was inspired by a story from the show of the late gossip queen Inday Badiday in the 90s. The film embraced its silly story completely but played it straight. The film's laughs are not broad or slapstick, it's subtle and despite the ridiculous of the circumstances the film was still able to treat the material with warmth and grace. Cherry Pie is really a great actress as she can express a mother's devotion to his fish child and you would actually understand her plight! The film also has a nice touch on the lives of people living in the slums that didn't focus on how miserable their lives are just because they are poor.

8 /10

Bahay Bata (Baby Factory) by Eduardo Roy Jr. and Jerome Zamora [New Breed]

"Bahay Bata" takes us on trip on a day in the life of the people in a public maternity hospital. Of the 4 films I watched yesterday this is the one that I liked the most. The film felt so raw and genuine. The way the nurses and the hospital staff interact with each other felt natural and has a smooth flow. The film has heart and it really opened my eyes on how difficult it is to give birth especially under these kind of circumstances. I like the "teenage moms" the most, the way they talked to each other was realistic. But the film's weakest point is nurse Sarah's (Diana Zuburi) love issues with his boyfriend (played by Yul Servo who did nothing on the film). I just think it was unnecessary and served as a distraction to the film. Plus there was a long 'walking sequence' with Sarah that was so draggy.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: July 23, 2011)

LMFAO's spends a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100 with "Party Rock Anthem" and I think it will still be hold the top for two or three weeks more as it still the #1 song on US iTunes with rising airplay to boot. Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" is the next possible #1 as the song is #2 on US iTunes with airplay rising but for the meantime it still can't dislodge former #1s "Rolling the Deep" and "Give Me Everything" as "Last Friday Night" stalls at #4 for the 4th straight week.

Perry's former #1 "E.T" (feat. Kanye West) descends #7-#10 on its 20th week in the Top 10 (22 weeks on the chart overall) and due to Perry impressive string of hits, she hasn't left the Top 10 for 61 weeks in a row and for sure she will spend more weeks as 'Last Friday Night" is a hit right now.

Longest chart sitter "F**k You (Forget You)" by Cee Lo Green drops #40-#41 this week on its 46th week on the chart. Escaping "recurrent status graduation" are Pink's "[F***in] Perfect" which rises #50-#42 on its 28th week, The Script's 'For The First Time" up #48-#45 also on its 28th week and Rihanna's S&M hangs for dear chart life at #50 on its 26th week on the chart.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as originally poster here

2011 Emmy Nominatons Reactions

And the nominees of the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards are out! Here's a list of the nominations for major categories, for the full list click here:

63rd Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations

OUTSTANDING DRAMA
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
Mad Men
I got 6/6 with my predictions and glad to see underdog "Friday Night Lights" finally getting a series nod it makes me hope that someday my other ignored favorites will get their recognition.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Kathy Bates, Harry’s Law
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Mireille Enos, The Killing
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men

5/6 for me I was surprised Kyra Sedgwick was snubbed this year after winning the last time. I underestimated "The Killing"

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Timothy Olyphant, Justified
4/6. The Emmys chose the younger guys this time than Irons and Macy. Glad to see Hugh Laurie still hanging on despite House not getting the rave reviews it used to have.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Walton Goggins, Justified
John Slattery, Mad Men
Andrew Braugher, Men of a Certain Age

5/6 I'm very surprised no "Boardwalk" Empire actor made it

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
Margo Martindale, Justified
Michelle Forbes, The Killing
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

5/6. Again, I underestimated "The Killing" but my gutsy prediction that Alfre Woodard will be nominated just because of her name came true but not in this category (I'll discuss it later on)

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Bruce Dern, Big Love
Beau Bridges, Brothers & Sisters
Michael J. Fox, The Good Wife
Paul McCrane, Harry’s Law
Jeremy Davies, Justified
Robert Morse, Mad Men

Beau Bridges earns another guest actor nomination and this is the only nod for Brothers & Sisters final season

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Mary McDonnell, The Closer
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Loretta Devine, Grey’s Anatomy
Randee Heller, Man Men
Cara Buono, Mad Men
Joan Cusack, Shameless
Alfre Woodard, True Blood

You see Alfre Woodard is nominated, haha! I just predicted in the wrong category haha. Totally shocked that on Law & Order: SVU guest actress made it
OUTSTANDING COMEDY
The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
Parks and Recreation
30 Rock
5/6 and I'm so glad Nurse Jackie was not nominated! So happy to see The Big Bang Theory finally cracking a comedy series nod! And I was right that NBC's agrresive campaigh for Parks and Recreation paid off!
OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

5/6. I have residual love for anything Gilmore Girls so I'm very happy Melissa McCarthy (Sookie!) was nominated! I underestimated Martha Plimpton but it was good to see a new face in the mix.
OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Louis C.K., Louie
Steve Carell, The Office
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
5/6. No Matthew Morrison, yes! Was surprised to see Galecki nominated but I'm okay with it, he's a good straight man and foil to Sheldon!

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Chris Colfer, Glee
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men

4/6. I'm so happy all four Modern Family actors made it! But I'm so sad Neil Patrick Harris was snubbed. I know NPH already won two emmys last year for hosting the Tonys and his guest role with Glee but I wanted him to win something for Barney, looks like it will never happen

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Jane Lynch, Glee
Betty White, Hot In Cleveland
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock

6/6. Predictable category but I hope one of of the Modern Family gals wins!

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Idris Elba, The Big C
Nathan Lane, Modern Family
Zach Galifianakis, Saturday Night Live
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live
Matt Damon, 30 Rock
Will Arnett, 30 Rock

Will Justin Timberlake win again? I think Matt Damon has a shot. I'm sad John Lithgow's guest stint at HIMYM was not recognized

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Kristin Chenoweth, Glee
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Gwyneth Paltrow, Glee
Cloris Leachman, Raising Hope
Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live
Elizabeth Banks, 30 Rock

Cloris Leachman should have been submitted for supporting actress, it would have an epic battle between her and Betty White. This is Paltrow's award to lose

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A COMEDY SERIES
Modern Family - Halloween
Modern Family - Slow Down Your Neighbors
Modern Family - See You Next Fall
30 Rock - Live Show
How I Met Your Mother - Subway Wars

Wow, 3 Modern Family nods didn't expect that. I'm glad HIMYM got a surprise nod here, that was a well directed episode.

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire - Boardwalk Empire
Boardwalk Empire - Anastasia
The Borgias - The Poisoned Chalice/The Assassin
The Killing - Pilot
Game of Thrones - Winter is Coming

Martin Scorsese directed Boardwalk Empire's pilot. The race is over

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A COMEDY SERIES

Episodes - Episodes 107
Louie - Poker/Divorce
Modern Family - Caught in the Act
The Office - Goodbye Michael
30 Rock - Reaganing
Surprised to see Episodes here. This is an exciting race, I have no idea which show will win.

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A DRAMA SERIES

Friday Night Lights - Always
Game of Thrones - Daelor
The Killing - Pilot
Mad Men - The Suitcase
Mad Men - Blowing Smoke

I was surprised neither The Good Wife nor Boardwalk Empire episode made it. With these nods, Mad Men will likely take the outstanding drama award for the 4th straight year.

OUTSTANDING REALITY SHOW HOST
Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars
Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance
Jeff Probst, Survivor

Cat Deeley replaces Heidi Klum, can she beat three-time winner Probst?

OUTSTANDING REALITY SHOW COMPETITION
The Amazing Race, CBS
American Idol, Fox
Dancing With the Stars, ABC
Project Runway, Lifetime
So You Think You Can Dance, Fox
Top Chef, Bravo
They expanded the categories from 5 to 6 this year and Survivor is still missing! I don't understand how Probst can win for hosting the show but the show itself has been ignored for the past four years!

OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SERIES
The Colbert Report, Comedy Central
Conan, TBS
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Comedy Central
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, NBC
Real Time With Bill Maher, HBO
Saturday Night Live, NBC

I like Jon Stewart but he has been for the past 8 years, Amazing Race winning streak ended last year so I hope someone else wins this year (rooting for Colbert)

OUTSTANDING TV MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Cinema Verite, HBO
Downton Abbey, PBS
The Kennedys, ReelzChannel
Mildred Pierce, HBO
The Pillars of the Earth, Starz
Too Big To Fail, HBO
I'm just glad they finally merged Miniseries and TV Movie into one category.

OUTSTANDING VOICE-OVER PERFORMANCE

Brenda Strong, Desperate Housewives
Maurice Lamarche, Futurama
Bob Borgen, Looney Tunes
Christopher Plummer, Moguls and Movie Stars
Seth Green, Robot Chicken

This award is dominated by animated programs so I'm quite surprised Brenda Strong finally made it after all these years of being Mary Alice, the dead narrator of Desperate Housewives!

2011 Emmy Watch [Part 3]

For the past two days, I shared my predictions for the acting categories for both DRAMA and COMEDY and to conclude my 2011 Emmy Watch I'm gonna share which shows I think will be called out on today's 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations announcement. Please note that this is a list of who I think WILL be nominated and not who I WANT to be nominated and my predictions are basically based on buzz, predictions from "experts", voting trends in the past and threw out some wild guesses as well to shake things up.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

Current champ and three-time winner "Mad Men" will be competing to go 4/4 and they have a great shot to achieve that although this time around it will face stiff competition with HBO's period drama "Boardwalk Empire" which already picked up Golden Globe and SAG awards. The dark horse is the red hot "The Good Wife" which gained stronger critical support the past season and is the standard bearer of broadcast dramas. Fantasy and sci-fi shows don't usually get much support on the Emmy awards but "True Blood" got in last year and I think the more critically-acclaimed "Game of Thrones" has the momentum and could sneak in a nomination. Perennial nominee "Dexter" will likely return while "Friday Night Lights" will bid for its first and last nomination. "Friday Night Lights" made waves last awards when it scored three major nominations for its actors Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton and another one for writing. With the show already ended and DirecTV's heavy campaign, FNL has a real shot of breaking in this year. It's now or never

Wildcard

This FX drama got a strong critical support for its second season and if the voters heard the loud raves for this show there's a great chance it could get 'Breaking Bad's slot which is not eligible this year. Plus the buzz for its supporting actress Margo Martindale is pretty strong and could help carry the show for a nomination.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

"Modern Family" and "Glee" will battle it out again for this award, yes there's no doubt both shows will get nominated this year. "30 Rock" ended its winning streak last year but it does not mean that the Emmy voters will forget them for good, it had a good season with buzzed episodes so this show is pretty much a lock for another nod this year. I predicted the "The Office" will not make it to the nominations last year after a sub-par season but they did and this year I'm quite sure they will be nominated again after producing a couple of strong episodes especially with Steve Carell's Michael Scott departure. "Nurse Jackie" was a surprise nominee last year (and I suspect mainly because of Edie Falco) and I think this pseudo-sitcom will still make it this year. "Parks and Recreation" is arguably the best reviewed sitcom overall the past season and NBC acknowledged that and launched an aggressive campaign and I strongly believe it will pay off with major nominations.
Wildcards

I predicted that "The Big Bang Theory" would get a nod last year and be the only traditional sitcom to make it but I was wrong and the show was snubbed but the good side is Jim Parsons' won for Lead Actor so it could help the show finally crack the series nominations field but I'm managing my expectations so I kept them as wildcard because it could be just a case the voters just like Jim Parsons and the show's geeky nature might not be something they prefer. Meanwhile, Showtime's "Episodes" featuring Matt LeBlanc received mixed reviews from critics but the show is a satire on producing sitcoms adapted from a foreign material and since the voters are from the TV industry (duh!) and they like shows that they could relate to (30 Rock, Entourage) so don't be surprise is "Episodes" could sneak in a nomination later.

***

And there you go! I'm so excited to find out LATER the nominations this year! I really hope to see some new faces and I hope a lot of my personal favorites would be recognized! Tomorrow, I will share my comments and thoughts on the actual nominees list :)
