Billboard Hot 100 (Nov. 6, 2010)

Far East Movement's "Like A G6" logs its 2nd week atop the Hot 100 this week with Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" still at #2. "Like A G6" topped the Hot Digital Songs chart selling 204 thousand downloads while "Just The Way You Are" rules the airplay chart. Rihanna and Nelly flip flopped with "Only Girl (In The World) matching its peak position at #3 and "Just a Dream" dropping to #4 while Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin in Love" holds steady at #5

***

Unlike "Speak Now" and "Back to December" Taylor Swift's final digital promo single "Mean" failed to debut inside the top 10 by a hair as it enters the chart at #11 this week. However, expect a bunch of Taylor Swift tracks debuting on next week's chart as the Swift's third album "Speak Now" went on sale this week and the tracks were available for individual purchase on iTunes and for a couple of days "Speak Now" tracks dominated the iTunes top 20. Coincidentally, industry reports say that Swift's third album has a good chance of selling 1 million copies for its first week. I'm rooting for her to achieve that especially in the sales climate this year, this would be great news that CD format isn't really dead.

***

On the other hand, the failure to debut inside the Top 10 of Taylor Swift's "Mean" paved the way for Pink to claim her 10th top 10 single with "Raise Your Glass" climbs from #11 to #10 this week. Pink has two #1s "So What" in 2008 and 2001's "Lady Marmalade", a collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim and Mya.

***

Neon Tree's "Animal" sits at #15 for the 4th consecutive week, will this song ever climb up or will this be the peak position? Other songs that are stalling after a promising rise a couple weeks back are Chris Brown's "Deuces" at #16 and Cee Lo Green's "F**K You (Forget You) at #17. On the other hand, after sluggish starts Daughtry's "September" and Sarah Bareilles "King of Anything" are showing signs of growth as both single climbs at #36 and #37. Adult contemporary tracks rises slow but they have a proven longevity and I could see these tracks staying for quite awhile on the chart and probably could reach the top 20 if the song catches on even more ala "Hey, Soul Sister". Let's wait and see.

***

Usher's OMG is still the longest chart sitter with 30 weeks on the chart, it climbs to #43 from #44 last week. But this could be the last week on the chart as we would see a lot of Taylor Swift tracks entering the Hot 100 next week which could push a lot of songs out to Recurrent status. Also candidates to moving to recurrent status are B.o.B's "Magic" (#45) and Train's "If It's Love" (#46) both songs spend its 20th week on the chart this and as per Billboard rules a song that charts below #50 on its supposed 21th week on the chart will automatically be moved to the recurrents chart.

NU 107 Reformatting?

UPDATE: It's now official

What a year for Mega Manila radio! First 103.5 Max FM closed down last July and was replaced by 103.5 Wow FM headed by Mr. Fu (formerly of 91.5 Energy FM) and Laila (formerly of 101.9 WRR/For Life/Tambayan) then last September one year old CHR station U92 ceased operations and by November it will be replaced by an "AM" type of station under TV5 but now rumor has it that NU 107 will undergo a reformatting! That's quite a shocker because I never thought of all stations this station would be the one changing its format! I mean since I started listening to radio in the late 90s they have been there and they are very legendary I must say. I first encountered the rumored reformating on Pinoyexchange.com at first I just dismissed it maybe it's just like the silly rumor RX 93.1 will go masa but then former 99.5 RT DJ Andrew tweeted this blog entry and it seems like it will really happen! I don't know what to say, I'm not really a regular listener of NU 107 save for the Stairway to Seven countdown but I just can't imagine Mega Manila radio without the station and what will happen to the Rock Awards? I thought the station was doing well business wise with the commercial load and their events. If this will really happen this will be a big blow to Mega Manila radio. Again, I have nothing against the current format of mass audience/masa FM stations (I enjoy listening to Love Radio's Tambalan) but Mega Manila has already 8 of them with virtually the same style/approach and if we believe the rumors the new 107.5 will go masa, that's just silly. I hope this isn't true or if it will really happen I hope the new format will be something exciting or new and not just the same old thing. But seriously , NU 107 reformatting? That's really unbelievable.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: 10/30/10)

As posted yesterday, Far East Movement's "Like A G6" unseats Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" for the top spot on this week's Billboard Hot 100. It's kind of cool to see back-to-back #1 songs from artists with Asian heritage since it does not happen frequently (who knows this could be the first time, I'll check). Meanwhile, after a strong start Rihanna's "Only Girl (In The World)" seemed to slow down the past couple of weeks but with the release of the music video the song got a boost and is once again on track to be Rihanna's 8th #1 (6th as the lead artist), the song climbs to #4 this week. The other #1 challenger "Just a Dream" by Nelly stays put at #3 for a second straight week.

***

Nicki Minaj is like "Ja Rule" or "Akon" of 2010, you know that one artist who is almost everywhere with so many "...feat" tracks but with her quite long discography of being "featured artist" she hasn't landed a top 10 hit until this week as "Bottoms Up" by Trey Songz climbs to #10 this week. Her previous highest peaking song was Ludacris' "My Chick Bad" which peaked at #11 and as for her own single, "Your Love" peaked at #14 earlier this year.

***

Taylor Swift's digital promo single "Back to December" debuted at #6 this week, her fourth consecutive top 10 debut for 2010. First was back in February for Valentines Day (movie) song "Today Was A Fairytale" which entered at #2 then her first single for third album "Mine" entered the chart at #3 and last week her digital promo single "Speak Now" debuted at #8. Taylor Swift is indeed unstoppable as her latest digital promo single "Mean" is on top of iTunes and will likely debut in the top 10 next week. Two years ago, Taylor Swift's digital promo singles did good too but not as well as this year, her top debut for a digital promo single was "Fearless" at #9. Fearless was later released as a single but it came nowhere near its debut position unlike "You Belong With Me" which was also released as a digital promo single and debuted at #12 on the Hot 100. When "You Belong With Me" was released as an official single it did not just matched its debut position but went all the way to #2, Swift's highest peaking single to date (along with "Today Was A Fairytale" but that song debuted at #2 but spent the rest of its chart life outside top 20).

***

The top 10 debut of Swift's "Back to December" blocked Pink for scoring what would have been her 10th top 10 hit as her single "Raise Your Glass" knocks the top 10 door at #11. The single from her upcoming Greatest Hits compilation leaped 40 notches from #51 last week. Will it land inside the top 10 next week? Let's wait and see.

***

As always. the Glee cast has a lot of songs entering the chart led by their rendition of" Lucky" by Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat which enters the chart at #27. In comparison, the original peaked at #48 but for what is worth the song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration.

***

After 54 weeks, "Hey, Soul Sister" exits the Hot 100 this week. The song is the most successful song of Train on the Hot 100, peaking at #3 and it also spent two weeks on top of the Hot Digital Songs chart. With "Hey, Soul Sister" gone the longest charting song on the Hot 100 this week is "OMG" by Usher feat will.i.am with 29 weeks on the chart (#44 this week) followed by "Airplanes" by B.o.B feat Hayley Williams (#31 this week) with 27 weeks on the chart.

'Like a G6' tops Billboard Hot 100

After trailing behind Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" for two weeks, Far East Movement's "Like a G6" finally unseats Mars to take the top spot on this week Billboard Hot 100, as reported by Billboard.com

However, despite having its best one-week sales yet (223K) "Like a G6" drops to #2 on the Hot Digital Songs chart due to Taylor Swift's digital promo single "Back To December" selling a strong 242,000 topping the chart this week. 'Back To December" debuts at #6 on this week's Hot 100.

On the Billboard 200, Lil Wayne's new album "I'm Not A Human Being" surges to from #16 to #1 this week thanks to the actual CD release of the album. The album debuted at #2 two weeks ago with digital sales only but here's the thing that week it sold 110K only but the CD release of "I'm Not A Human Being" sold 125K, a little higher with the digital-only release. This case just shows that despite the dominance in singles, the digital realm could not really do the same magic for album sales. CDs are still pretty much needed to see bigger sales for albums Here are the Top 20 Best Selling Albums on the Billboard 200 courtesy of Pulse Music Board

Wired In: "The Social Network" Experience

So yesterday I watched the special screening of "The Social Network" and I definitely enjoyed the film. The screenplay was indeed outstanding, it was very witty and sharp and I was really engaged with every dialogue. Good job Aaron Sorkin! I loved Sorkin's work with "Sports Night" and the speech in the pilot episode on his last TV show "Studio 60 On The Sunset Trip" was one of the most unforgettable TV moments I've ever watched (I have yet to see an episode of his other famous, awarded TV series "The West Wing" though). Sorkin do really have a way with words! It's not easy for a film like this which does a lot of talking to be this engrossing and not get the viewers lost. The screenplay is definitely the "star" of this film! Jesse Eisenberg 's performance was good, I'm impressed. Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake did fine as well although I honestly don't think it was that good to get an Oscar nod (like what some critics are hyping about) but it's just me. For the record I do believe "The Social Network" was partly a fictionalized version of what really happened with the founders. The film afterall is an adaptation of the book "Accidental Billionaires" which only had one side of the story [of Eduardo Saverin] as the main source of the book. With that said, I could still say that the film captured the essence of what went on before Facebook became what it is right now. It's a story that tells you that before we can reach the top it is inevitable that we will make enemies or hurt people or have people attempt to pull us down. They all come with success, whether we like it or not. It's no easy road, you can't play it safe, you have to be tough enough to survive a dog-eat-dog kind of world.

I have to admit the buzz and hype for "The Social Network" is overselling the film like this is the one that defines the decade or a generation or what, I'm not sure if they are right because I haven't watch a lot of films the past years to agree to a statement like that. I expect some people who will see this film leaving the theater scratching their heads asking "So that was the hype all about?" because the film does not have those WTF or mind-blowing moments. So I suggest that if you'll watch the film that don't set your expectations that high like this film will change your life or something because remember that it's all subjective anyway. Let me make this clear, I'm not downplaying this film's merits but I worry that some people will fail to see how good this film because it did not meet their sky high expectations. Anyway, the bottomline if you want to see a well-told story with engaging dialogue go see this film.

Spotlight / Nostalgia Fit: Mara Clara

Everytime I see the plugs for ABS CBN's upcoming remake of the 90s soap opera "Mara Clara" I can't help but feel nostalgic. That soap ran for five years (remember the days when Filipino soap operas last that long?!) and the show started when I was a young kid and during the early years of that show I was not going to school yet so I would watch Mara Clara with Nanay every afternoon. I remember being so angry and scared with Mara's adopted father Gary. The late Eruel Tongco was really an effective antagonist I must say. And of course that epic diary where Tiyo Kardo wrote the secrets! The story is melodramatic, cheesy, dragged out for too long but I have a soft spot for it because it was part of my childhood and the soap is so iconic in Pinoy pop culture. I really had goosebumps when I saw the plugs featuring the old cast introducing the cast of the remake. To be honest, I think it's tad too early to have a remake for Mara Clara but I'm looking forward how the "modern" version will play out.

Nuffnang and PLDT myDSL Special Screening

Nuffnang Philippines and PLDT myDSL will be having a special screening of the much-anticipated film of the season "The Social Network" on October 19, 2010 at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 1. I'm hoping I will be lucky to be one of the chosen few to score tickets to see this film! If you want to join just check out Nuffnang Philippines!

***

The Social Network is to Facebook, as PLDT myDSL modem+wifi is to Facebook too!... and to Blogger! .... and to YouTube!.... and to Skype! .... and pretty much everything else you can visit in the World Wide Web because with PLDT my DSL's modem+wifi's amazing features like plug and play ability like a regular modem, 25 meters of myDSL wifi connection, simultaneous connection via Wifi, a 4-port hub that can be used for future services and the flexibility of remote troubleshooting people can enjoy their favorite websites with high speed and reliable Internet connection wherever and whenever they like!
I personally love the flexibility of remote troubleshooting feature because I'm no techno-savvy, just a regular person who knows basic stuff about Internet and other techie stuff so having this feature will clearly help me if ever I experience problems with my connection and I will not be dumbfounded on how to fix it.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: 10/23/10)

Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" continues it's Hot 100 supremacy spending its 4th consecutive week at #1 while Far East Movement's "Like a G6" stays at #2 with a rising "Just A Dream" by Nelly posing a threat to snatch the #1 crown soon. If Nelly hits #1 with "Just A Dream" it will be his first #1 since 2006's "Grillz".

Taylor Swift's digital single "Speak Now" sold 217 thousand digital download this week, strong enough to catapult the song to a #8 debut this week. It's "digital" single because this track is not really an official single which will be promoted on radio and have a music video (at least not for the time being), this track is part of the promotional campaign of Swift's third album (also titled "Speak Now") where she releases one track per week until the release of her album on October 25. She released another track this week "Back to December" which for sure will debut inside the top 20 next. On the other hand, Swift's "nemesis" Kanye West also has a track debuting on the top 20 this week as "Runaway" featuring Pusha-T enters the chart at #12. What a coincidence, right? :D

Cee Lo Green formerly of Gnarls Barkley (of "Crazy" fame) enters the Top 20 this week with "F**K You! (Forget You)". The song really uses the "eff" word but "Forget You" is the radio version. Don't be fooled with the song's title as this song is not as offensive as the title suggests, it has the 60s Motown sound and Cee Lo's vocal is just great. It topped the UK Singles chart this week, will it do the same on the Hot 100 despite the title?

Meanwhile, After 60 weeks on the chart, Lady Antellum's "Need You Now" bows out on this week's Billboard Hot 100. With "Need You Now" exiting the chart the longest staying on the chart right now is "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train with 54 weeks on the chart. The single climbs to #43 this week from #44 so it may stay for at least two more weeks, let's wait and see.
