2010 Was...

... a year I will never forget. This year I faced some major changes in my life that helped me better understand what "growing up" exactly means. But I got through it and I learned a lot. I'm so thankful to God for all the blessings he gave to me and my family. I'm so thankful we were able to overcome some obstacles and challenge thrown to us. I know years from now I will look back at 2010 as a very pivotal year in my life. Thank you for the memories 2010 and welcome 2011!

Happy New Year everyone and thank you for visiting my blog :)

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: January 8, 2011)

Bruno Mars landed his 3rd #1 (second as lead artist) as "Grenade" ascends 2-1 on this week's Billboard Hot 100. As reported yesterday, "Grenade" sold an impressive 558k downloads this week making it possible to dethrone three-week #1 "Firework" by Katy Perry from the top spot. Billboard also reports that Bruno Mars is the first male act since Puff Daddy (now known as P.Diddy) to have his first two singles (not counting his featured tracks "Nothin on You" and "Billionaire") climb the top spot of the Hot 100. This has been a great year for Bruno Mars (well save for getting busted with cocaine) and if he only was eligible for the Best New Artist for the Grammy Awards he is a lock for the win. Anyway, for Filipino fans Bruno Mars will visit the Philippines on April!

Enrique Iglesias scores another top 10 hit as "Tonight (I'm Lovin You") jumps from #13 to #7, his first hit this year "I Like It" is still on the chart thought (it drops #33-38 on its 33rd week on the chart, the longest chart sitter).

Taio Cruz had a very good 2010 scoring two smash hits "Break Your Heart" which was #1 for a week and "Dynamite" which peaked at #2 (it could have reach the top but "Love The Way You Lie" was just too strong to defeat at that time). Both songs made it on Billboard's Yearend countdown, with "Dynamite" at #9 and "Break Your Heart" at #10. While "Dynamite" is still doing well on the chart (up #17-#16 on its 30th week on chart). He is on course to have another hit as new single "Higher" featuring Travie McCoy zooms from #80 to #41 this week.

"Shake Up Christmas" by Train debuted at #99, this is the sixth and likely final Christmas song to enter the Hot 100 for the year (calendar year not the Billboard issue dates) after Coldplay's "Christmas Lights" (#25), The Killers' "Boots" (#79), the Glee Cast's covers of "Baby It's Cold Outside" (#57) and "Welcome Christmas" (#59) and last week's new entry "Oh Santa" by Mariah Carey

Grenade Explodes Atop Hot 100

Bruno Mars' scores his second solo #1 and third #1 overall on the Hot 100 as "Grenade" tops this week's Billboard Hot 100. "Grenade" sold a massive 559k downloads this week! In fact, the top 10 on this week's Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart all sold above 290k. This was made possible by the Christmas sales rush as many people receive new mp3 players and iTunes cards to so last week was indeed a huge sales week! Last week's #1 "Firework" by Katy Perry steps down to #2 but like 'Grenade" the single also enjoyed huge sales spike this week selling 508K. Here is this week's top 10 on the Hot Digital Songs Chart courtesy of Paul Grein's Yahoo! Chart Watch:

1. Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (559K)
2. Katy Perry's "Firework" (508K)
3. Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" (411K)
4. Rihanna featuring Drake, "What's My Name?" (343K)
5. Wiz Khalifa's "Black And Yellow" (331K)
6. P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" (324K)
7. Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E's "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" (312K)
8. Lil Wayne featuring Cory Gunz's "6 Foot 7 Foot" (308K)
9. The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" (294K)
10. Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj's "Bottoms Up" (291K).

The huge digital sales this week served a big impact on this week's Hot 100 as the Hot 100 top 10 is almost identical to the Hot Digital Songs top 10. The top 5 is composed of former #1 songs led by "Grenade" and "Firework" and followed by Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" at #3, Rihanna and Drake's "What's My Name" at #4 and Pink's "Raise Your Glass" at #5 while Enrique Iglesias scores another top 10 hit as his new single "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You) jumps to #7. Here is is this week's Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 (full chart to be posted tomorrow)

1. Bruno Mars' "Grenade"
2. Katy Perry's "Firework"
3. Ke$ha's "We R Who We R"
4. Rihanna featuring Drake, "What's My Name?"
5.
P!nk's "Raise Your Glass"
6.
Wiz Khalifa's "Black And Yellow"
7. Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E's "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)"
8.
Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj's "Bottoms Up"
9. The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)"
10.
Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"

While the single sales are rosy the album sales on the other hand are gloomy as for the first time in Nielsen Soundscan history (which started in 1991) no album sold at least 300k during the Christmas week where sales are greater than usual. Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" continues its reign on top selling 276k (bringing its total sales to date to 2.8 million, it will likely cross the 3 million mark next week) followed by former champ Susan Boyle's "The Gift" at #2 selling 240K this week. This is sad to see albums fairing weekly on the holidays but what else is new sales are down 13% from last year. Expect record breaking low sales on January-February 2011 when sales usually take a big slump after the holidays. Unfortunately, there are no Billboard 200 album sales leak so far this week that I have seen so I'll just share the top 10 for the meantime (courtesy of Yahoo! Chart Watch):

1. Taylor Swift, "Speak Now", 276,000
2. Susan Boyle, "The Gift", 240,00
3. Various Artists, "Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album", 160,000
4. Jackie Evancho, "O Holy Night", 151,000
5. Michael Jackson, "MICHAEL", 150,0006.
6. Jamie Foxx, "Best Night Of My Life", 144,000

7. Eminem, "Recovery", 137,000
8. Nicki Minaj, "Pink Friday", 133,000
9. Keyshia Cole, "Calling All Hearts", 128,000
10. Rihanna, "Loud", 111,000

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: January 1, 2011)

The first chart for 2011 for the Billboard Hot 100 has a very nice issue date: January 1, 2011 or 1/1/11! And how apt we welcome the chart year for Billboard Hot 100 with the song "Firework" by Katy Petty atop the Hot 100 chart for the third straight week. Digital leader "Grenade" by Bruno Mars climbs a notch at #2 posing a serious threat to unseat "Firework" on top the Hot 100 and let's not discount former #1 and current airplay top notcher "What's My Name" by Rihanna and Drake at #3 this week.

This week's top debut comes from Lil Wayne, fueled by strong sales, his single "6'7" enters the chart at #9, this is Lil Wayne's second consecutive top 10 debut after "Right Above It" debuted at #6 earlier this year.

Michael Jackson scores his 38th Top 40 hit as his posthumous single "Hold My Hand" featuring Akon leaps from #65 to #39 this week.

Far East Movement scored a big hit with "Like A G6" which topped the chart for 3 non-consecutive weeks this year but many thought they would be just another one hit wonder but looks like they won't be as their second single "Rocketeer" featuring OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder is starting its chart life pretty well, on its 3rd week on the Hot 100, "Rocketeer" zooms 19 notches from #60 to #41.

Mariah Carey lands her 43rd Hot 100 entry as her new Christmas song "Oh Santa" kicks off the Hot 100 chart this week at #100. Time will tell if "Oh Santa" will also reach iconic status like Mariah's 1994 Christmas song "All I Want For Christmas Is You" which until today enjoys a good amount of airplay during the Christmas season and has become a modern Christmas classic. Despite the enormous popularity of "All I Want For Christmas is You" it only peaked at #83, it could have peaked higher if Billboard allows Christmas songs to chart after their initial release year.

"Oh Santa" is the 5th Christmas song to enter the Hot 100 this year after Coldplay's "Christmas Lights" (#25), The Killers' "Boots" (#79) and the Glee Cast's covers of "Baby It's Cold Outside" (#57) and "Welcome Christmas" (#59) .

Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars Reclaim #1

Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" returns on top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart knocking off Susan Boyle's "The Gift" to #2 while Bruno Mars' "Grenade" dislodges three-week #1 "Firework" by Katy Perry on the Hot Digital Songs chart. "Speak Now" sold 259 thousand copies this week while "The Gift" sold 254 thousand this week, both albums saw an increase in sales from the previous week. "Speak Now" has already sold 2.6 million is just 8 weeks, it will likely sell 2.8 million by the end of the year which will be the #3 best selling album for 2010 behind Eminem's "Recovery" (3.2 million) and Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" (3 million). On the other hand, Bruno Mars returns atop the Hot Digital Songs chart with his second single "Grenade" which sold 212 thousand this week, the track dislodges Katy Perry's "Firework" which sold 192k this week. The sales gap between "Grenade" and "Firework" is just over 20k and with Katy's track dominant lead on airplay, "Firework" will likely be the #1 song for the third straight week on the Billboard Hot 100 to be posted tomorrow.

Entering at #3 on the Billboard is the posthumous album of the late Michael Jackson titled "Michael" which sold 228K this week. This album is a collection of unreleased tracks Jackson has been producing as early as 5 years ago. Also new at #3 on the Hot Digital songs chart is Lil Wayne's "6'7" which sold 167k this week.

American Idol 9 runner up Crystal Bowersox debut album "Farmer's Daugther" entered the chart at #28 selling 58 thousand. While Lee DeWyze's "Live It Up" debuted on a higher position at #19 a couple of weeks back. Bowersox outsold him as DeWyze's debut album only sold 39 thousand on its first week (the album is currently at #119 and has so far sold 84k). Nevertheless, the sales are both disappointing for AI alums and unless there's a sales turnaround for the two (or some other AI9 finalist will break out) this will likely be the first batch of American Idol alumni not to have someone have land a top 10 album (or even score a hit on the Billboard Hot 100).

Here is this week's top on the Hot Digital Songs Chart courtesy of Paul Grein's Yahoo! Chart Watch:
  1. Bruno Mars - "Grenade" (212K)
  2. Katy Perry - "Firework" (192K)
  3. Lil Wayne - "6'7" (166K)
  4. Black Eyed Peas - "The Time (Dirty Bit) (147K)
  5. Rihanna feat Drake - "What's My Name?" (141K)
  6. Ke$ha - "We R Who We R" (134K)
  7. P!nk - "Raise Your Glass" (130K)
  8. Whiz Khalifa - "Black and Yellow" (122K)
  9. Enrique Iglesias feat Ludacris - "Tonight (I'm Lovin'/F*ckin You) - (109K_
  10. Trey Songz feat Nicki Minaj- "Bottoms Up" (99K)
Here are the Top 25 CURRENT albums on Billboard. I emphasize on CURRENT because this list does not include catalog albums (old albums) like Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" which according to Yahoo! Chart Watch is #20 on the Billboard 200 this week. Once again this is the only one that leaked at Pulse Music Board so better than nothing, right? :)

Good Luck Azkals!

Yes, I jumped the Azkals bandwagon! I admit before I really don't care about football at all since it is not popular here in the Philippines although during the World Cup this year I felt left out when I found out that the Philippines is one of the two countries that did not really even join the qualifiers. I wondered, football captured the hearts of every nation in the world except the Philippines, why?
But well when the Philippine Azkals Football team beat reigning champion Vietnam in the AFF Suzuki Cup, things changed. For the first time football made the headlines. There was massive hype and they got the attention of the media. ABS CBN Sports immediately got the rights to air the next game of the Azkals against Myanmar on Studio 23 and I watched a football game for the first time. Watching the Philippines vs Myanmar match made me understood why the rest of the world finds the sport exciting. I guess it will really matter to you if you have a team to root for. It felt refreshing that a sport aside from basketball and boxing is making waves here in the country.
As I type this the Azkals are currently battling it out against Indonesia to advance to the finals. I don't want to be pessimistic but I think a win is really a long shot but nevertheless I'm still proud of the Philippine Football Team. Their achievement will forever be remembered by the country and hopefully this will be a start for a brighter future for Philippine football. I have a former colleague who told me that football is popular in the provinces so there is already a following in the country, we just need to make the football program in the country stronger and better exposure. Who knows maybe in three to five years the Philippines could be a force to reckon with in football.

17th Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations + Thoughts

The nominees for the 17th Screen Actors Guild Awards were released and there were some surprising choices. Like the Golden Globes the SAG prioritizes the film categories than TV, they don't have a supporting actors category so lead actors compete with supporting actors for one award. One good thing I love thought about SAG is that they have ensemble awards which honors the cast as a whole (everyone has a trophy, yay!). Here are the nominees and some thoughts

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
STEVE BUSCEMI / Nucky Thompson – “Boardwalk Empire” (HBO)
BRYAN CRANSTON / Walter White – “BREAKING BAD” (AMC)
MICHAEL C. HALL / Dexter Morgan – “DEXTER” (SHOWTIME)
JON HAMM / Don Draper – “Mad Men” (AMC)
HUGH LAURIE / Dr. Gregory House – “HOUSE” (FOX)

Competitive category, same set of nominees as with the Golden Globes and this could be the list for next year's Emmy awards too!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
GLENN CLOSE / Patty Hewes – “DAMAGES” (FX)
MARISKA HARGITAY / Det. Olivia Benson – “LAW & ORDER: Special Victims Unit” (NBC)
JULIANNA MARGULIES / Alicia Florrick – “The Good Wife” (CBS)
ELISABETH MOSS / Peggy Olson – “Mad Men” (AMC)
KYRA SEDGWICK / Dep. Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson – “The Closer” (TNT)

While the Golden Globes pulled some surprises with Piper Perabo and Katey Segal sneaking in, the SAG chose the proven names yet again

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
ALEC BALDWIN / Jack Donaghy – “30 Rock” (NBC)
TY BURRELL / Phil Dunphy – “Modern Family” (ABC)
STEVE CARELL / Michael Scott – “THE OFFICE” (NBC)
CHRIS COLFER / Kurt Hummel – “Glee” (FOX)
ED O’NEILL / Jay Pritchett – “Modern Family” (ABC)

I'm okay with Eric Stonestreet getting snubbed here just because Ed O'Neill finally getting some love for his fantastic work at Modern Family. So sad Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory was left out!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
EDIE FALCO / Jackie Peyton – “NURSE JACKIE” (Showtime)
TINA FEY / Liz Lemon – “30 Rock” (NBC)
JANE LYNCH / Sue Sylvester – “Glee” (FOX)
SOFIA VERGARA / Gloria Delgado-Pritchett – “Modern Family” (ABC)
BETTY WHITE / Elka Ostrovsky – “HOT IN CLEVELAND” (TV Land)

Surprised that The Big C's Laura Linney was snubbed here since she's a well loved actress on Hollywood . Very happy Sofia Vergara made the cut, in fact she's the only Modern Family actor to be nominated in the Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG! I actually forgot Betty White had a new sitcom this year! Good job SAG for reminding us and I guess the Golden Globes must be kicking themselves out for the Betty White oversight

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
The Closer (TNT)
Dexter (Showtime)
The Good Wife (CBS)
Mad Men (AMC)

Too bad the great ensemble from Lost was not nominated for one last time

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series

30 Rock (NBC)
Glee (FOX)
Hot In Cleveland (TV Land)
Modern Family (ABC)
The Office (NBC)

Hot In Cleveland was the surprise nominee while I would have picked other shows like The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother I'm not really upset with Hot in Cleveland nod because while the show overall is just mediocre it has a great cast that elevates their material. The past few seasons of The Office have been dissed by a lot of critics but the ensemble getting an another is truly well deserved because I consider the cast of The Office one of the strongest on TV, every character even the minor provides laughs and they have great chemistry. I really dunno what to expect once Steve Carell leaves the show this season. I'm rooting for Modern Family to win because I want the brilliant kid actors of the show be rewarded as well because they have no chance on getting individual nods at all with any major award show

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
JOHN GOODMAN / Neal Nicol – “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” (HBO)
AL PACINO / Jack Kevorkian – “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” (HBO)
DENNIS QUAID / Bill Clinton – “THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP” (HBO)
ÉDGAR RAMÍREZ / Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, aka ‘Carlos’ – “CARLOS” (Sundance Channel)
PATRICK STEWART / Macbeth – “MACBETH (GREAT PERFORMANCES)” (Thirteen/PBS)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
CLAIRE DANES / Temple Grandin – “TEMPLE GRANDIN” (HBO)
CATHERINE O’HARA / Aunt Ann – “TEMPLE GRANDIN” (HBO)
JULIA ORMOND / Eustacia Grandin – “TEMPLE GRANDIN” (HBO)
WINONA RYDER / Lois Wilson – “WHEN LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH: THE LOIS WILSON STORY” (CBS)
SUSAN SARANDON / Janet Good – “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” (HBO)

Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series

Burn Notice (USA)
CSI: New York (CBS)
Dexter SHOWTIME)
Southland (TNT)
True Blood (HBO)

How I wish Chuck was nominated here

COLIN FIRTH / King George VI – “THE KING’S SPEECH” (The Weinstein Company)
