2010 Golden Globe Nominations + Thoughts

The nominees for the 68th Golden Globe Awards were released today. Golden Globes focuses primarily on the movie stuff than the TV stuff because if not then they shouldn't have lumped ALL supporting actors from Comedy, Drama, Mini Series and TV Movie on ONE category! Anyway, the awards will be given on January 16, 2011. Here are the nominees and I share some of my thoughts too.

FILM

BEST PICTURE, DRAMA
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King's Speech
The Social Network

- These are the films that have been buzzed around online so no surprise there

BEST PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist

- I didn't knew "Red" was a comedy film because the movie poster made it look like an action movie. "The Kids Are All Right" is by far the most praised film in this field so this will likely win with "Alice In Wonderland" as a possible upset because of its huge box office success

BEST DIRECTOR
Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
David Fincher, The Social Network
Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
Christopher Nolan, Inception
David O. Russell, The Fighter

- All came from the Drama field, sorry Comedy directors

BEST ACTOR, DRAMA
Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King's Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter

- Ryan Gosling I guess is the surprise pick here because a lot of people were expecting Jeff Bridges for "True Grit" instead

BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA

Halle Berry, Frankie and Alice
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine

Halle Berry was a surprise pick here, I've not seen her name on forums and award speculation sites

BEST ACTOR, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp, The Tourist
Paul Giamatti, Barney's Version
Jake Gyllenhaal, Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey, Casino Jack

Not just one but two Johnny Depp nods! Surprised that last year's winner Robert Downey, Jr was not nominated for Due Date

BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
Anne Hathaway, Love and Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie, The Tourist
Julianne Moore, The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone, Easy A

I'm glad Emma Stone got a nod here! "Easy" A was a fun, teen movie and the quality is on par with Mean Girls

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Christian Bale, The Fighter
Michael Douglas, Wall Street 2
Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
Jeremy Renner, The Town
Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

BEST SCREENPLAY
Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, 127 Hours
Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, The Kids Are All Right
Christopher Nolan, Inception
David Seidler, The King's Speech
Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network

Aaron Sorkin should win this easily :)

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Despicable Me
How To Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3

I've watched 3/5 films. Can't wait to see "Tangled" next year and I will probably just see The Illusionist on DVD. "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Toy Story 3" were both good, I'm torned which film I want to win, Toy Story 3 will likely win though

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Biutiful (Mexico)
The Concert (France)
The Edge (Russia)
I Am Love (Italy)
In A Better World (Denmark)

I hope someday The Philippines will compete here :)

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Alexandre Desplat, The King's Speech
Danny Elfman, Alice in Wonderland
A.R. Rahman, 127 Hours
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network
Hans Zimmer, Inception

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"Bound to You," Burlesque
"Coming Home," Country Strong
"I See the Light," Tangled
"There's A Place For Us," Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
"You Haven't Seen The Last of Me," Burlesque

I've heard all songs and I love "I See The Light" (performed by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi) the most because it's such a Disney classic tune. "Bound to You" is also a good song with great vocals from Christina Aguilera

TELEVISION

BEST TV SERIES, DRAMA
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men
The Walking Dead

Surprised "Lost" got snubbed for its final season. Freshman shows "Boardwalk Empire" has the movie-like pedigree production wise and great reviews so it was shoo-in for a nod and 'The Walking Dead" is the most talked about new show this season and the Globes loves to honor the hottest new show

BEST TV SERIES, COMEDY / MUSICAL
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie

The Big Bang Theory is the first multi-camera sitcom to be nominated here in six years! Very happy for this one. The Big C was nominated because of Laura Linney, nothing else, the show is not funny at all. Glee will still win this one for a second year though

BEST ACTOR, DRAMA
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House

Cranston has won the Emmy for the past three years but this is the first time he got nominated here.

BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA
Julianne Marguiles, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Piper Perabo, Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Piper Perabo was a surprise nominee here! But she's a likable actress but her work so far with Covert Affairs is not on par with Jennifer Garner's work on AI so I don't think she will win.

BEST ACTOR, COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Thomas Jane, Hung
Matthew Morrison, Glee
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Yay for first time nominee Jim Parsons! I wished Ed O'Neill was nominated though although it was the cast discretion to all go supporting but this is such a weak field, he would easily get a nod on this one

BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY
Toni Collette, United States of Tara
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Lea Michele, Glee

Linney bumped last year's first time nominee Courtney Cox for Cougar Town and I'm sad about that Courtney got shafted :(

BEST MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Carlos
The Pacific
Killers of the Earth
Temple Grandin
You Don't Know Jack

BEST ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Idris Elba,
Ian MacShane, PIllars of the Earth
Al Pacino, You Don't Know Jack
Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship
Edgar Ramirez, Carlos

BEST ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Hayley Atwell, Pillars of the Earth
Claire Danes, Temle Grandin
Judi Dench, Return to Cranford
Romola Garai, Emma
Jennier Love Hewitt, The Client List

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Scott Caan, Hawaii Five-O
Chris Colfer, Glee
Chris Noth, The Good Wife
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
David Straithairn, Temple Grandin

The Best Supporting Actor for Everything! I'm happy Eric Stonestreet got a nod! Scott Caan was the surprise nominee. Chris Noth got snubbed in the Emmys and this is a little consolation for hin but I think David Straithairn will easily win this one just because it's dramatic role from a HBO TV Movie.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Hope Davis, The Special Relationship
Jane Lynch, Glee
Kelly McDonald, Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Vergara making the cut on this highly competitive and crowded race is a pleasant surprise :)
