Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: October 1, 2011)

The Billboard Hot 100 this week is pretty much static as last week's Top 4 songs hold their positions this week and little movement on the chart overall. Maroon Five and Christina Aguilera's Moves Like Jagger spends its 3rd week atop the chart followed by Adele's Someone Like You, Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks (4th week at #3) and LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem.

Adam Levine has two top 5 hits this wee as Gym Class Heroes' Stereo Hearts where his vocals is featured swaps with Bad Meet Evil and Bruno Mars' Lighters #6-#5. Cobra Starship You Make Me Feel Good returns to the top 10 at #7, matching the peak of Good Girls Go Bad. Rihanna's Cheers climbs #10-#8. I initially thought this track has a shot on top but looks like it wont as Rihanna's team is already preparing for the release of a new single from a new album next month. Rounding out the top 10 are Nicki Minaj's Super Bass at #9 and Lady GaGa's You and I at #10, both songs are down two notches.

Coldplay is the top debut this week as their new single Paradise enters the chart at #16. This is their 4th Top 20 hit after Viva La Vida (#1), Speed of Sound (#8) and previous single Every Teardrop is a Waterfall (#14).

Another new entry is Tony Benett & the late Amy Winehouse with the song Body and Soul which enters the chart at #87. At 85 years old, Benett is the oldest artist ever to have song chart at the Hot 100.

The Band Perry's If I Die Young drops out the top 20 this week and lands at #21 on its 43rd week on the chart. Will this be the start of the song's journey on the way out of the chart? Let's wait and see.

Jennifer Lopez's On The Floor drops out on this week's chart and went recurrent after spending 29 weeks on the chart and peaking at #3. Also out is current American Idol champ Scotty McCreery's coronation song I Love You This Big which spent 16 weeks on the chart and peaked at #11 (its debut position). McCreery's song held up better than last year's winner Lee DeWyze wherein his coronation song Beautiful Day spent only 4 weeks on the chart and peaking at #24.

Spotlight: 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards

Here are some of my thoughts of the recently concluded 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards:

I like Jane Lynch as a host too bad the material of the whole show as a whole is weak compared to Jimmy Fallon last year.

I know it's dull but I'm glad The Amazing Race got their Outstanding Reality Competition award back after Top Chef pulled an upset last year. TAR is simply a well-crafted reality show that is well above others production wise :)

Modern Family won all 5 categories it was nominated for: Outstanding Comedy Series, Writing, Directing, Supporting Actor and Actress! Wow! I know some found it an overkill or boring and I understand that but since I'm a big fan of the show I was so thrilled they dominated like this. And they truly deserve those awards. Really glad both Mr. and Mrs. Dunphy (Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen) won on the same night. And showrunner Steven Levitan's speeches as always are lovely to hear. Congratulations guys!

I'm sad Steve Carell lost for Outstanding Comedy Actor I dunno why the voters refused to recognized his talent. I'm also sad for eventual winner Jim Parsons, he looked uncomfortable when he received the award and he later said in interviews that he was actually expecting Carell to win. Parsons is also getting some backlash from online fans and I feel bad about that because in fairness Parsons' submission was terrific and he deserved the award as well it's just that people (like me) were expecting the academy to honor Carell's body of work. Oh well this is the only win that spoiled that night for me because otherwise it was a good selection of winners.

I love how diverse the drama winners are this year as Game of Thrones, Justified, The Good Wife and Friday Night Lights each won in the acting categories. I especially love the surprise win for Kyle Chandler, such an underrated actor finally getting recognition! Margo Martindale's speech is so heartfelt. Boardwalk Empire didn't nominate the awards and won as expected for directing for Martin Scorsese who is always a delight to see on TV. I'm also glad Friday Night Lights' Jason Katims beat Matthew Weiner for Writing. To be fair Weiner's an amazing writer but his acceptance speeches shows are so egoistic haha. Plus an underdog win is always welcome. Mad Men won outstanding drama for the 4th year in a row but with the spreading of awards earlier on there was at least an excitement on which show will take the award and that's a welcome change.

Hands down the best moment in the awards was during the announcement of Outstanding Lead Actress for Comedy. Amy Poehler spearheaded this plan to gate crash the stage while the announcement of nominees and the other nominated actress played along and they had a mini beauty pageant right there. It was so hilarious! Melissa McCarthy won while admit her win is questionable since Poehler and Linney had stronger submissions over her but Melissa's win was such an endearing moment that it's all okay. And I admit as a Gilmore Girls fan, I was so thrilled to see talented Sookie getting this big recognition :)

Below I listed my predicted winners in one list along with my predictions for Reality-Competition, Variety and Mini-series/TV Movie categories. 2011 Emmy Awards Predictions [Part 4]

I already dished out my predictions for Directing and Writing, Acting for Drama and Comedy and for the final part of my 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards predictions, I'm going to discuss the competition between the series vying for Outstanding Comedy and Drama series.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

Winner: Boardwalk Empire
Close Second: Mad Men
Wildcard: Friday Night Lights

Mad Men has never lost an Emmy since it debuted 4 years ago but this year it will face its stiffest competition yet with HBO's historical drama Boardwalk Empire. After Boardwalk Empire bagged a lot of awards in the Creative Arts Emmys this year, their chances of winning the main award is higher and maybe voters would like to honor some new show instead. Mad Men is still a force to reckon with, in general it still had better reviews that Boardwalk Empire and there's still a strong support on the shown so I wouldn't be surprise that even if Boardwalk Empire could sweep a lot of awards they could still lose this one. My wildcard pick is Friday Night Lights the show that was ignored in its early years that is finally nominated for the first and last time. It's a long shot but maybe some voters would feel like honoring one of the best reviewed dramas of the past decade, this is their only chance after all.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

Winner: Modern Family
Close Second: Glee
Wildcard: Parks and Recreation

Modern Family led the nominations this year on the comedy side however they lost all their nominations in the Creative Arts Emmys this year and that gave me a little pause and the show might not be unstoppable from getting its second straight win but then again the show's submissions are strong and this show is a rare kind of success in broadcast TV these days as it is both a critical and commercial hit. While some critics were hard on Modern Family this year it still received good reception overall especially in the TV industry. Glee bag 3 awards in the Creative Arts Emmys and they have good chances on winning supporting actor and actress this year too but they got snubbed in both writing and directing though and general consensus is that the second season had poor quality overall but then again they submitted well and those strong episodes could pull an upset but would the academy really honor a show that has become a polarizing one this year? Parks and Recreation is probably the best reviewed comedy of the past season and rightfully so. Their submission is in my opinion the strongest of the bunch and if the judging base on that alone I could see them having a chance to win the award but the show have no writing or directing nod and their only other nomination is Lead actress so it's really a long shot for now but maybe next year ;)

Tomorrow I will post a recap of my predictions and i will also post my predictions for the categories that will be awarded on the ceremony too like the reality-competition program, mini-series/TV movie and variety-comedy-talk shows

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: Sept. 24, 2011)

Maroon Five's Moves Like Jagger (feat Christina Aguilera) reclaims the top position on the Billboard Hot 100 this week as last week's #1 Adele's Someone Like You slides to #2 and Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks holds at #3 for the 3rd straight week. It was a close match between the three songs as they have been dominating the iTunes for three weeks now and they are all rapidly increasing in airplay. It's quite refreshing to see three different sounding songs ruling the chart.

Adam Levine also returns to the top as a solo act via his featured performance in Gym Class Heroes' Stereo Hearts which climbz #12-#6 this week. It entered the top 10 two weeks ago, the same time Moves Like Jagger hit #1 so another double victory for Levine.

Rihanna's Cheers (Drink to That) finally enters the top 10, up a notch from #11 which it held for two weeks. This is Rihanna's 19th Top 10 hit.

Katy Perry's Top 10 streak enda this week as Last Friday Night falls #10 to #12 this week. Perry has been inside the top 10 for 69 consecutive weeks with all her five singles from Teenage Dream. The streak started when California Gurls debuted at #2 in May 2010. Likwise, Perry's 4th single E.T also drops out on this week chart after 30 weeks on the chart. This marks the first time in about a year that there's only one Perry song on the Billboard Hot 100.

Kelly Clarkson's Mr. Know It All debuts at #18, her second highest debut after Never Again debuted and peaked at #8 in 2007.

Dev's In The Dark climbs #28 to #20 this is her 2nd Top 20 hit after Far East Movement's Like a G6 topped the chart last year where her vocals is featured.

The Script's Nothing jumps #53 to #39 landing the Irish band's 3rd Top 40 hit after Breakeven (#13) and For The First Time (#23).

The Band Perry's If I Die Young stays at #19 on its 42nd week on the chart. Barring a sudden resurgence in airplay and sales, it's safe to say this will be one of the longest staying songs on Billboard chart history that never made in the top 10. The single peaked at #14 earlier this year.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

2011 Emmy Awards Predictions [Part 3]

Continuing on my 2011 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards predictions I will now discuss the nominees of the acting categories of the comedy category. You can check out my Directing & Writing here and Drama Acting categories here.

LinkOUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Ty Burrell ("Modern Family") - "Good Cop, Bad Dog"
Chris Colfer ("Glee") - "Grilled Cheesus"
Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men") - "The Immortal Mr. Billy Joel"
Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") - "Halloween"
Ed O'Neill ("Modern Family") - "The Kiss"
Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family") - "Mother's Day"

Winner: Ty Burell
Close Second: Chris Colfer
Wildcard: Ed O'Neill

This will be a competitive race and this time around all four Modern Family guys are nominated and I think that there's a chance that there will be a voting split that could lead to a Colfer win but last year Stonestreet still manage to win so this year I'm handing my prediction to the one who had the strongest tape and that is Ty Burell. And apart from his good submission he also did a solid job on the other episode submissions of his co-actors so that is a big edge for Burell. Colfer might manage to win the award though, apart from the possibility of a Modern Family vote split, he is already won the Golden Globe and his submission centers on his character and has showy moments but it's not a comedic performance but dramatic. My wildcard pick is Ed O'Neill his chicken slapping scene in his submission is simply hilarious and I have a feeling it could be enough to get him a lot of votes.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Julie Bowen ("Modern Family") - "Strangers on a Treadmill"
Jane Krakowski ("30 Rock") - "Queen of Jordan"
Jane Lynch ("Glee") - "Funeral"
Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family") - "Slow Down Your Neighbors"
Betty White ("Hot in Cleveland") - "Free Elka"
Kristen Wiig ("Saturday Night Live") - "Host: Jane Lynch"

Winner: Jane Lynch
Close Second: Betty White
Wildcard: Sofia Vergara

Well Lynch's submission is a strong one however like Colfer's episode her submission is also dramatic but it's well acted nevertheless. Plus being the host of the awards night is an advantage as well (although when Neil Patrick Harris hosted two years ago he still lost). And oh Wiig's submission is also the one that featured Lynch so that clearly won't hurt her. White won the SAG earlier this year and she is still well-loved to the academy, her submission is basically more of the same White antics but it's good enough anyway and will definitely challenge Lynch. Vergara's submission is very, very weak but I'm thinking her work with the submitted episodes of her co-stars was strong enough and maybe the voters will choose on her overall performance (and maybe they are regular watchers as well), it's really a long shot I know but I think she has a glimmer of hope.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock") - "Respawn"
Steve Carell ("The Office") - "Good-Bye Michael"
Louis C.K. ("Louie") - "Bully"
Johnny Galecki ("The Big Bang Theory") - "The Benefactor Factor"
Matt LeBlanc ("Episodes") - "Episode Seven"
Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory") - "The Agreement Dissection"

Winner: Steve Carell
Close Second: Jim Parsons
Wildcard: Louis C.K

Carell's submission is good as it showcased Carell's amazing versatility as an actor and yes since this is his last season with the show maybe the Emmy voters would finally reward him with this award he truly deserves. But even without the overdue factor the tape alone is strong enough. Last year's winner Parsons could spoil a Carell win though as his tape is actually the one with the most belly laughs moments. C.K's tape is not particular funny but his cred as writer/creator/director of his show could potentially help his chances and pull an upset.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie") - "Rat Falls"
Tina Fey ("30 Rock") - "Double-Edged Sword"
Laura Linney ("The Big C") - "Pilot"
Melissa McCarthy ("Mike and Molly") - "First Date"
Martha Plimpton ("Raising Hope") - "Say Cheese"
Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation") - "Flu Season"

Winner: Laura Linney
Close Second: Amy Poehler
Wildcard: Martha Plimpton

Linney has won all the three times she was nominated for and with her 4th nomination for her own show The Big C I can see her winning streak continuing this year. Her submission is not particularly funny but it's charming and well-acted. And well the past two winners of this award (Falco and Toni Collete) won for well-acted episodes but not funny performances so yeah she has this in the bag. Poehler's submission is a very strong one and with Poehler's rising profile plus critical acclaim I think she has the biggest shot to upset Linney. Plimpton's is very wacky and I actually consider this the funniest one among the nominees so the voters find it hilarious as well this could be enough reason to pull a come from behind win.

Review: Thelma

When I first saw the trailer of Thelma I liked it immediately. There was a sense of authenticity and depth that the trailer was able to express. After watching it I had mixed feelings, the acting and technical aspects are great but I felt there’s something lacking in the narrative for it to hit the homerun.

Thelma (Maja Salvador) is stubborn but cheerful young woman from Ilocos with great but undeveloped talent for running. Tragedy struck when her sister Hannah (Eliza Pineda) got into accident and she may never be able to walk again. Thelma uses her running skills to win a local race to buy her sister a wheelchair but it was just the start of what could be a burgeoning running career.

Thelma boasts of amazing technical achievement. It has the most beautiful cinematography of any local movie that I’ve watched this year. The seas, the farm, the windmills, the sabong, the racetracks, practically every shot was breathtaking. Ilocos’ natural beauty was perfectly displayed here. I wouldn’t be surprised that after watching this movie you would immediately book a flight to Ilocos.

However, the screenplay is a little confused as it attempted to touch a lot of stories but without developing it properly. Hannah’s accident was the driving force for Thelma to pursue running but it didn’t get the resolution it deserves. I’m not expecting a happy ending of some sort but the movie left the arc hanging. There are also subplots about her mother’s sickness; her auntie’s love life and Thelma’s own love life, which I felt were unnecessary to the story.

What the story got right is the plight of an impoverished but talented athlete like Thelma. I met athletes like her before when I was with the student publication back in college and I can say that Thelma truly symbolizes them. I saw in Thelma an athlete’s struggle to balance school while doing their best to shine on their sport because they really need it. While their future rests on how they perform, you can truly see that they are passionate with their sport. The homesickness an athlete could feel was perfectly touched here. When Thelma’s family called her and Thelma choked up, it felt so raw and affecting.

The acting is pretty great in this movie led by the terrific Maja Salvador. Salvador commanded the screen like no other. You can see the dedication she poured in this role. Her Ilocano didn’t feel forced and she gave justice to the physical demands of playing the character. Her dramatic moments never went melodramatic or too sappy. I particularly like the scene when she and Hannah were eating empanada as they silently weep their misfortunes. It was a moving scene that never went over the top.

While Thelma never fully reached its potential storywise, I still consider this one of the better local movies released in mainstream cinemas this year. 8 / 10

2011 Emmy Awards Predictions [Part 2]

The other day I shared my predictions for directing and writing for Drama & Comedy and for the 2nd part of my 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards predictions I'll dish out my predictions on who will probably win the acting categories for drama series.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Andre Braugher ("Men of a Certain Age") - "Let the Sunshine In"
Josh Charles ("The Good Wife") - "Closing Arguments"
Alan Cumming ("The Good Wife") - "Silver Bullet"
Peter Dinklage ("Game of Thrones") - "Baelor"
Walton Goggins ("Justified") - "The I of the Storm"
John Slattery ("Mad Men") - "Hands and Knees"

Winner: Allan Cumming
Close Second: Peter Dinklage
Wildcard: Walton Goggins

Honestly speaking with no Breaking Bad, Damages and Lost actors this year this category will be up in the air so there could be a surprise win (ala Archie Panjabi last year for Supporting Actress). Cumming lights up the screen everytime he is in a scene in The Good Wife and his submission highlights how he commands the screen like no other, he reminds me of Michael Emerson. Dinklage on the other hand is a scene stealer on Game of Thrones and this is the kind of breakout roles that usually shine on the Emmys. My wildcard pick is Goggins with his very intense performance in Justified. The acting on that show reminds me of Breaking Bad and we all know how the actors of that show fared on the Emmys last year.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Winner: Margo Martindale
Close Second: Archie Panjabi
Wildcard: Kelly Macdonald

As I've said earlier in the Supporting actor category, the acting in Justified is terrfic and has the similar vibe with Breaking Bad and Martindale as the main villain showed great range and her submission is very flashy that's hard too ignore. Panjabi was a surprise winner last year with a so-so submission but this time around she has a stronger tape so I wouldn't be surprise if she would be the first actress in several years to repeat as Supporting actress winner. My wildcard pick is Macdonald mainly because I suspect there will be huge Boardwalk Empire love on the Emmys this year and she could benefit from it.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Winner: Juliana Marguiles
Close Second: Elisabeth Moss
Wildcard: Kathy Bates

Marguilles was the frontrunner last year but The Closer's Kyra Sedgwick pulled an upset which made sense she did submit a strong episode submission. This year Sedgwick is snubbed and Marguilles had more stronger submission, this could be the year that the Emmys would make up for the Emmy we thought she would get last year. But it won't be an easy race for Marguilles as Moss' submission is an acting powerhouse where she was able to express her character's inner turmoil and demons in a way that would affect you a lot. I'm not a regular watcher of Mad Men and that episode still got me. My wildcard pick is Bates because of her acting pedigree and the academy do love rewarding movie actors doing TV roles.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Winner: Jon Hamm
Close Second: Steve Buscemi
Wildcard: Timothy Olyphant

With three-time winner Bryan Cranston out of the race it's anybody's game and this may finally be the time for Hamm to get the award for his performance of the iconic TV role and he has the best submission among all the nominees (and they are all good submission to boot). However, Buscemi won the Golden Globe and SAG awards earlier this year plus Boardwalk Empire is poised to raked in a lot of awards this year so that's a very big advantage for him. Truth be told among the nominated actors I found his performance the weakest but of course he has the pedigree of a great character actor that is respected in the industry. My wildcard pick is Olyphant in a very intense role. He may be the lesser known actor in this field but the role is somewhat like Bryan Cranston's Walter and I really have a feeling he is the darkhorse in this competition so don't count him out.

2011 Emmy Awards Predictions [Part 1]

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards is almost here! It will be on September 18, 2011 in the U.S (September 19,8 am in the Philippines via Velvet channel). This week I'll share to you my predictions for some categories. For the first part I'm gonna dish out who I think will win in the writing and directing categories. Let's roll!

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A COMEDY SERIES
  • Modern Family - Halloween
  • Modern Family - Slow Down Your Neighbors
  • Modern Family - See You Next Fall
  • 30 Rock - Live Show
  • How I Met Your Mother - Subway Wars
Winner: Beth McCarthy [30 Rock "Live Show"]
Close Second: Michael Spiller [Modern Family "Halloween"]
Wildcard: Pamela Fryman [How I Met Your Mother "Subway Wars"]

I think this will be a close fight between Spiller and McCarthy, Spiller have the edge of winning the DGA award earlier this year however McCarthy was able to successfully translate 30 Rock's essence and humor to the live, multicamera format and that's something hard to do so I can see the academy honoring this amazing achievement. My wildcard pick is Fryman, this episode is really well-directed and this episode already won the editing award so this might surprise us come Emmy night.

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A DRAMA SERIES
  • Boardwalk Empire - Boardwalk Empire
  • Boardwalk Empire - Anastasia
  • The Borgias - The Poisoned Chalice/The Assassin
  • The Killing - Pilot
  • Game of Thrones - Winter is Coming

Winner: Martin Scorsese [Boardwalk Empire "Pilot"]
Close Second: Tim Van Patten [Games of Thrones "Winter is Coming"]

This is Scorsese's award to lose and I would be utterly shocked if he doesn't win the award. But if ever there's someone that could beat the Academy award winner it would be Van Patten who helmed the wonderfully-crafted pilot of Games of Thrones.

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A COMEDY SERIES
  • Episodes - Episodes 107
  • Louie - Poker/Divorce
  • Modern Family - Caught in the Act
  • The Office - Goodbye Michael
  • 30 Rock - Reaganing
Winner: Louis C.K [Louie "Poker/Divorce]
Close Second: Greg Daniels [The Office "Goodbye Michael"]
Wildcard: Steven Levitan / Jeffrey Richman [Modern Family "Caught in the Act"]

Honestly speaking Louie's Poker/Divorce is so-so overall but the "Poker" part of the episode was amazing and I could see that alone could carry this episode to a win. Daniel's wrote a heartfelt sendoff for its main character giving this show a great shot for the award. Personally, I found "Caught in the Act" just an OK episode of Modern Family but among the nominees this episode had the most laugh out loud moments so this should not be counted out.

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A DRAMA SERIES
  • Friday Night Lights - Always
  • Game of Thrones - Daelor
  • The Killing - Pilot
  • Mad Men - The Suitcase
  • Mad Men - Blowing Smoke

Winner: Matthew Weiner [Mad Men "The Suitcase"]
Close Second: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss [Game of Thrones "Baelor"]
Wildcard: Jason Katims [Friday Night Lights "Always"]

Weiner has owned this category for the past couple of years already and "The Suitcase" is a particularly strong episode so this would be his award to lose. "Baelor" is a strong acclaimed episode as well so that could challenge Weiner but we should not count out Katims who wrote a good episode that closed out the series on a good note.

Tomorrow: My predictions for the Drama acting categories
