Philippine Box Office Roundup 8

Here's the 8th edition of my Philippine Box Office Roundup and you can read my previous recap here. And as always here are some notes with regards to my box office roundup:
  • The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
  • Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.

Titanic returns to Philippine theaters on a good note earning 5.48 million pesos in just two days of release (it was released on Black Saturday, April 7). It easily beats all the recent 3D re-releases (Lion King - 5.05 million, Star Wars Episode 1 - 4.5 million pesos and Beauty and the Beast 1.6 million PHP). The movie earned $4.8 million in 1998, which would likely translate around 150-180 million pesos. However, due to its 3D format and the upcoming big releases (The Avengers is on April 25), this won't have a long run like in 1998. The other new release on the chart is Machine Gun Preacher which was just a limited release (20 screens) and earned 359K. There were two other new releases on April 7 but Box Office Mojo does not have the data for local flick Moron 5 and The Crying Lady and horror movie Still yet.

Looks like The Hunger Games will not surpass UnOfficially Yours as the top grossing movie of the year as the former's gross of 133 million is still behind the latter's 157 million gross. And with two movies coming out in the next couple of weeks, I don't expect it could earn enough to surpass the John Lloyd Cruz-Angel Locsin romcom. But let's wait and see.

Jumping to #4 on the year-to-date chart is Wrath of the Titans with a cume of 103 million pesos. It won't reach the Clash of the Titans' gross of 211 million pesos in 2010 as the movie will already lose screens this week to Battleship but it already earn good enough and will likely end up around 130-150 million pesos.

Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at the BoxOffice.com forums:
