Still

My maternal grandmother passed away this day two years ago. I still miss you Mama Iyang. I still wish you are here with us. I miss the sumptuous meals you prepare us. I miss seeing you. I miss hearing your voice. How I wish you saw Ate's son, your great grand son. I know for sure you will also be fond of him. It has been two years I know, I've already accepted that you are no longer with us but still I may have move on but I'm still not over losing you . I still get teary eyed whenever I remember the day when Nanay called and informed me that you passed away. I still get teary eyed whenever I see your picture in our altar and your senior citizen I.D that Nanay kept. I miss you Mama. I still do. But I know you are happy up there. I know. I love you mama Iyang.

115 Days to Go

BEFORE CHRISTMAS!

Woah! For the 1000th time how time flies!

Can you believe we are near Christmas already and the last part 2009! September also marks my first year of being employed. I was hired September 4 and started working officially September 9. And well in a span of one year, I already had three jobs. haha...haha?
I hope this year's Christmas season will be more festive than the previous years. But I know with the worldwide economic crisis I should not expect too much. But then why should let that dampen my mood right? So therefore I promise myself I will do all means to feel the Christmas spirit :)

My Top 5 Pixar Films

I'm a Pixar fanboy. I love all the films they made! Pixar's animation style is flawless, every movie they released brings something that will make you go "Wow!". Their attention to detail is amazing. And what's even great is that they are not just concentrating on style only but substance as well. Each film's story has its own quirkiness but still manages to deliver a well though of story. They appeal not only to kids but to adults as well. With that, its really hard for me to rank my favorite films. Except for the #1, I kept changing my mind about the rankings before I finalized the rankings. Anyway here is my list:

5. Toy Story series (1995/1999)

I decided not to separate the rankings of the two films because both are good anyway. Toy Story 1 is groundbreaking. I remember being so amazed with this when I was a kid. It was my first time to see a 3D animated film. What's amazing for Toy Story 2 is that they were able to top the first installment which is something rare for a sequel. The story of the sequel was very poignant. and on some level more mature. Toy Story 3 will come out next year. I'm both excited and nervous on how it turn out but the premise excites me as Andy will now be a grown up and it will deal on how will the lives be for the toys now that Andy is not a kid anymore. I think its really brave for Toy Story to make Andy grow up and not do a floating time line. So let's wait and see!

4. Up! (2009)

I love, love the story of Carl and Elie. It clearly showed what unconditional love is. The animation for this movie is breathtaking. It seemed like the real thing! My jaw literally dropped when Carl's house started to "fly" already and also during the first view of the Paradise Falls, truly beautiful! The characters are lovable as well. The "dog collar translator" is so cool!

3. WALL-E (2008)

WALL-E has the darkest storyline of all the Pixar films but the animation and the sound production are very top notch. The story is a bit disturbing since you will really ponder if the future they presented is possible. A big hats off to the film because they were able to tell the story despite having few comprehensible human dialogue. I find it amazing too that there is no "antagonist" in the story. The antagonist is actually the effect of too much dependency on technology. But I think this the less child friendly movie because of the theme and how the story was played out.

2. Finding Nemo (2003)

Finding Nemo has the story that almost everyone could relate, the conflict is simple if you come to think of it but the message it delivered is universal. Who does not have an issue of being independent right? Plus this is such a fun movie, for me this is the most entertaining to watch of all the Pixar films. Dory is the funniest animated character I have ever watched. I was really laughing until my hearts content with her lines.

1. Ratatouille (2007)

I love Ratatouille because of the conflict it presented: Wanting to be something that you are not supposed to be there and choosing to go against tradition because of something that your heart tells you that is right for you. Yeah it's a bit extreme to use a rat that wants to be a chef but I like what Remy represented, he is the total outcast who want to challenge the tradition. The animation is superb the fact that I really got grossed out with rat colony (especially when they fell from the roof!) shows how realistic and polished the animation is. And the in the end is full of wisdom, just captures the whole essence of the movie. The best and most sophisticated script for me of all the Pixar films.

***

Don't get me wrong, I love Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, A Bugs Life and Cars especially Monster Inc (it was a close call for #5) but these rankings are more of a reflection of the films that left a significant impact to me. Can't wait to see what Pixar has to offer in the future :)

In a nutshell

Last week (August 16) we celebrated the first birthday of my nephew John Kenneth Rodrigo! Time flies, it was a treat to see my nephew grow. He is such an adorable baby. And I'm glad he is not sickly baby like me before haha. He could now stand on his own and walk a bit. I can't wait the day when he starts talking :)

About work, we finished working on El Cartel two weeks ago and we haven't been assigned to a new soap opera yet. But we did work on translating and writing dubbing scripts in Filipino. The first one was the movie HOTEL RWANDA for Viva's PBO cable channel. The film is so moving I must say. It was about the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Watching it was very disturbing. The other project we worked was for a religious educational video. It was a seminar on Bible study. Translating and writing a dubbing scripture for a lecture is so hard! There are times the speaker will not finish his thought or will jump to another thought then go back to the a topic he previously talked about then he will make jokes that when you translate it in Filipino is not really funny. So far I'm enjoying the job so hopefully I will really stay here longer than my first two haha.

I will turn 22 two weeks from now. Oh well.. Hahaha

Fanboy Moment!

A couple of weeks ago I joined the promo of the website gilmoregirlsnews.com which gave the readers an opportunity to ask a question to ALEXIS BLEDEL. But only 15 questions will be chosen by the site owner and we will not find out which questions were chosen until the publishing of the interview. I was really crossing my fingers that one of my two submissions will be chosen. AND WELL LUCKILY MY QUESTION WAS CHOSEN! See the article here
What can I say? Well, I'm kinikilig haha because in a way I was able to reach my ultimate celebrity crush! I love you Alexis Bledel! Haha! Here was my question and her answer

From Jecoup: Alexis, what was you favorite ‘Stars Hollow festivity’?

ALEXIS: Jecoup,

The Hay Bail Maze was my favorite. It was enormous; it took over the whole town square on the Warner Brothers backlot. We shot scenes that included most of the cast members, and I seem to remember that there were a lot of family and friends visiting set that day, too. It was toward the end of our seventh season when everybody was saying their goodbyes for the summer, not sure if we would return for another season in the fall.

Nostalgia Fit: Teeny Little Super Guy

Seriously, it drove me crazy trying to remember the name of this Sesame Street character on a drinking glass. It was a Eureka! moment when I finally found out the name. TEENY LITTLE SUPER GUY was my favorite segment of this show. I just find his world fascinating! I remember playing with our cups and glasses as if they were real people and I let them swim in the sink too haha. Feels great to see a clip of this again :)

Nostalgia Fit: Top 5 Nickelodeon Shows!

For the record, we didn't have cable back in the day and although we have cable now there is no Nickelodeon channel. So the Nick shows I loved are limited to what shows were aired on free TV. Anyway, I got inspired to blog about this because my friend Ara blogged about Nickelodeon so there it reminded me of my favorite shows from that media giant.

5. Invader Zim

This was shown on RPN 9 weeknights at 6pm. This show is so weird from the stories to the over all look of the show. Its a dark comedy about an alien posing as a human who have plans to take over the earth. The show was short-lived, well it was too off beat for kids I guess.

4. Hey Arnold!

I love the "love team" of Arnold and Helga here! I like how Helga rapidly changers her mood from being bitchy when Arnold is around to love smitten when he is not around. And the Arnold shrine is hilarious haha.

3. The Secret World of Alex Mack

Larissa Oleynik enough said! One of my first TV crushes! I love her quirky powers! I used to watch this on weekend mornings on Studio 23. The show ended on a cliffhanger though leaving to the viewers' mind if Alex Mack decided to use the solution to go back to being normal. After Alex Mack, I last saw Alex err Larissa on 10 Things I Hate About You (wow I realized that movie was shown in 1999, 10 years ago already!). Well, I've read over the net that she continued school and graduated with a college degree. Good for her at least she did not suffer the same fate of Lindsay Lohan.

2. Spongebob Squarepants

Among the five shows here, this is only still airing new episodes. This show celebrated its 10th year anniversary this year! RPN 9 used to air this weekdays 530 pm before moving to ABC 5 /TV5. This is the type of show that even though I watched an episode a lot of times of already it never fails to make me laugh. I even liked the Filipino-dubbed version airing on TV5 right now. I must say they did a good job on the dubbing! Cheers to more years of Spongebob

1. Rugrats

Those cute babies! I started watching this when GMA 7 aired this every Sunday mornings then for a time it moved to Studio 23. I watched all three movies of this show. I love watching the babies adventures which in the grown up world are just pretty simple stuff. I love how the show perfectly captured the coloful imagination of a child. I will always have fond memories of this show :)

Women of Courage

from CNN

Surreal. That is how I describe what I felt as former President Corazon Aquino was laid to rest today. It was the longest and most memorable memorial service I've ever witnessed in my life. Only a person like Cory could inspire people to go out to the streets again, this time not because of anger, but to pay respect to this honorable woman who left a long lasting legacy for the Filipino people.
We mourn for her death but we celebrated the life she lived. Thank you Cory. Thank you.

***

And also Bill Clinton successfully negotiated to give pardon to journalists Euna Lee and and Laura Ling who were both detained in North Korea because of "illegal entry". When I found out about the news I was horrified because there was a possibility that these two women would be punished in a labor camp. It was a journalist' s nightmare. I was really moved the moment the women step out of the airplane and saw their families. I'm so glad they are safe now.

Paying Respect

Picture courtesy of The Philippine Daily Inquirer

Yesterday, I was part of this crowd who witnessed the procession of the casket of former President Cory Aquino at Ayala Avenue in Makati City. I ate my lunch late for this but it was worth it. The feeling was surreal. While the people were waiting they were excited. They were giggling & laughing. I felt awkward because I think it was inappropriate. But when the convoy passed, first there was silence then cheering and clapping. Then the confetti flew in the sky, it was breathtaking. The feeling was overwhelming, I send out a silent prayer for Tita Cory. It felt good that in my own way I paid my respect to his honorable lady. I will say this again, her presidency was not perfect but no one can deny that Tita Cory is a GREAT FILIPINO and as Conrado de Quiros, a Cory critic, said on his eulogy for her today, she is a nice person. She deserves this love she is receiving right now. Thank you Tita Cory. Thank you...
I hope this will not be the last that we will witness someone to be honored like this. I really hope so.

Goodbye President Corazon Aquino

I know that with her failing health, it was just a matter a time, but upon hearing the news earlier that former President Corazon Aquino passed away today I won't lie I got teary eyed. I never met her but her death affected me too much. Tita Cory might not have been the best president we had but she was a great Filipino. She showed how much she loved the country. No one can deny that. Her presence will be surely missed. Rest in peace President Corazon Aquino. In a way, I'm happy because you will now be reunited with Ninoy :)
