Merry Christmas

To all who visits and reads my blog let me greet you a Merry Christmas (and well if you don't celebrate it Happy Holidays!). I had a nice Christmas eve, my family was complete and everybody is in good shape. If you ask me what my Christmas wish, I just want my family particularly my parents to be spared from any life threatening illness. This year both nanay and tatay had health scares, although nothing grave but it still it freaked me out. I hope everyone will have a nice Christmas day. Anyway, watch out for my Decade /2009 in review blog posts in the coming days. :D

20 Plus Inc Christmas Party

Last Friday (December 18), Beginnings at Twenty Plus, Inc had its Christmas Party which was held at Villamor Golf and Country Club. I enjoyed it especially the group production numbers haha. Each group was mixed with different members of departments so it was great time to get to know the other people in the office especially for someone like me who is relatively new to the company. Sadly, our group lost but no hard feelings because we had a great time. The picture above is me with my groupmates with one our big bosses Mam Pelita (the lady in the center). The theme of the party was actually Bollywood but I got lazy and just recycled my Chinese costume I had for my foreign dance class in college haha. Anyway, a lot of my officemates had amazing costumes! Anyway, for the exchange gift, I've received a CD (Matchbox Twenty's Exile on Mainstream) which was actually one of my wish list so I'm very glad I got it. I won a David's Salon Gift Certificate which is not bad but I'll be honest I was salivating for the portable DVD player! Well, maybe next year!

Overall, it was a great night. A good first company Christmas party for me. Looking forward to attending more in years to come. :)

Billboard's Top 100 songs of the Decade

I'm not totally surprised Mariah Carey topped the chart with her 2005 hit We Belong Together, it dominated the chart like no other and had record breaking audience impressions during its run. And I personally consider her best single to date. I'm happy this song topped the list. If you notice there's a discrepancy with Black Eyed Peas 2009 hits I Gotta Feeling and Boom Boom Pow, on the 2009 year-end chart Boom Boom Pow topped list while I Gotta Feeling settled for #4 but in the decade-end list I Gotta Feeling ranked higher (#5) while Boom Boom Pow is at #7. How did it happened? Billboard had a different calculation for both charts, the yearend chart is based on accumulated chart points for the whole chart year (airplay + sales + streaming) while the decade-end list is focused solely on the chart run of each song. Billboard explained why the formula is such for the decade-end list because this is the only way they could make up a concise list since there was a different way of computing the year-end tallies earlier this decade so the management thought that is the only fair way to rank the songs for the decade. Personally, I find it odd that one song will be lower in the yearend while higher in the decade-end list especially that both songs are just recent. Oh well. Here is the full list:

Coming Soon

I've been preparing some Best of Decade entries (My top songs, TV shows and some observations of the decade), comments on the Billboard decade-end charts plus Year-end stuff as well but I didn't have the time to do it all because the past two weeks I was preoccupied with work but most especially the rehearsals for the production number for the company Christmas happening tomorrow haha. Well, we will dance Jai Ho (the original version) . Hope we do fine tomorrow. This will be my first Christmas party since High School. I'm excited :D I hope I won't screw up tomorrow for our production number haha. Anyway, to those reading my blog (especially the chart geeks like me!) stay tuned for my several lists coming soon. Let me tell you that ranking my favorite songs for the decade was ONE TOUGH job haha. My list is not yet finalized, hopefully by this weekend the list will be ready. Plus, I do really have a lot of topics that I would love to blog about before the year and decade ends, I hope I accomplish it all.

2009 Billboard Year-end Hot 100

The results are in and as for how my prediction went, I got 3/10* correct order haha. I knew it predicting Just Dance as the top song was a bit ambitious but on the plus side I got 9/10 on which songs will make the Year-end Top 10. Gives You Hell was a surprise hit in the Hot 100 this year I must say. Definitely it was great year for dance songs on the Hot 100. I'm thrilled Love Story sneaked in to the Top 5 and that I'm Yours managed to hit #7. I'm very glad for the positions of You Found Me and Use Somebody. Quite disappointed Fireflies is only at #60, well the late surge for the song is a factor, maybe next year it could go manage to enter the top 20 as base from the song's performance right now on the Hot 100, I could see the song still performing well at least until March 2010. Billboard also released their Decade-end chart and I will talk about in on a separate post.

* I got #4, #6 and #9 correct. I had the same top 3 but in different order haha.

Billboard's One-Hit Wonders of the 2000s

This month is very exciting for chart geeks as we are not only receiving hordes of year-end lists but also a bunch of "Best of Decade" lists (2000-2009). Billboard already started the "season" with releasing some of chart notes and trivia for the decade. So far from what they've published online, the Top One-Hit Wonders got my attention.

Daniel Powter's Bad Day topped the list as it was #1 on the Hot 100 for 5 weeks but this is the one and only song from Daniel Powter that charted. Bad Day also topped the 2006 Year-end Hot 100. I don't know if this is something to be ashamed about, well yes, it's not flattering to top this list but still the song was a genuine hit. And to be fair, when Bad Day became a hit in the US, the song was already a year old and it was just really lucky it was used in American Idol That exposure for me made it somehow qualified as a novelty hit but nevertheless the song is good and one of the most memorable songs of the decade. Who knows next decade, Powter could score another hit on the Hot 100?
Some other surprising stuff I found from this list is the inclusion of Gnarls Barkley and Macy Gray. I was not really aware that Crazy (for Gnarls Barkley) and I Try (Gray) are their only Billboard hits. Anyway, they are the type of artists that are not chart-driven anyway. S Club 7 was very popular in Europe and Asia but in the US they only had single hit, "Never Had A Dream Come True". Before Nicole Scherzinger found success with the Pussycat Dolls, her first group "Eden's Crush" scored one hit "Get Over Yourself" and while 98 degrees was a moderately successful boyband in the US, Nick Lachey as a solo artist is a one-hit wonder with his post-Jessica Simpson single "What's Left of Me. Linkin Park is a band that have scored several Billboard Hot 100 hits but member Mike Shinoda's side project Fort Minor only had one hit with "Where'd You Go". The Calling had several hits here in the Philippines but in the U.S only their signature song "Wherever You Will Go" was a hit. Carrie Underwood obviously did well after American Idol but her runner up Bo Bice is considered a one-hit wonder. On another note, I'm surprised that season 5 winner Taylor Hicks did not make the cut as his only hit on the Hot 100 was the #1 song "Do I Make You Proud", his AI coronation song. I don't know if it was just an oversight or if his previous charted songs were counted as hits (in my opinion it shouldn't be). I have nothing against Hicks by the way. To see the full list with explanation of why they made the cut click here but if you just want to see the songs that made the cut in just one list, see below:

Martial Law in Maguindanao

I woke up today with the news that PGMA declared Martial Law in Maguindanao. To be honest, I got a bit freaked out when I heard the words "Martial Law" even though we are far away from Maguindanao. I never experienced that when Marcos declared it a long time ago. And well growing up I've learned a lot of horror stories during that time (and to be fair I also did learn some positive effects of that but the bad stuff outweighed the good stuff) . In a way, given how chaotic Maguindanao is right now, I think it was right to declare that but well PGMA over her nine years of presidency was always haunted with mistrust and conspiracies. Some say that this is an over kill and that she is planning something that would benefit her in the long run. I hope not. I do really hope so. We don't need that kind of fear as we welcome the holidays and the new year. I hope things will not turn out bad in the end. I pray for that.

Spotlight: Life UneXpected

I'm a sucker for teen/young adult shows haha. I love Gilmore Girls, Buffy, Angel, Everwood, Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Smallville, Grosse Pointe and many more. Most of those shows came from the now-defunct WB network in the US. Since the merger of UPN and WB, the original shows they've been producing so far has not impressed me yet or made me feel the same fondness compared to the WB shows. Gossip Girl was campy fun on the first season with the most ensemble in years (I love you Blake Lively <3) but the later on the show became too superficial and outrageous (or maybe I'm just growing up? Haha). I want a teen/ young adult show with a heart. Now CW will premiere Life UneXpected shown on January 2010 and the trailer got me. It feels like the old school WB shows. I'm hoping this show will live up to my expectation and well hopefully it does well on the ratings so I could see it for a long time. Anyway, check out this trailer and if you're into this kind of TV show, I think you'll love the vibe of this show

52nd Grammy Awards Nominations

Today the list of nominees of 52nd Grammy Awards and well I was bit surprised with the results. The nominees for the major categories are very mainstream, not that there's anything wrong with it especially coming from a person like me who is really into Pop/Mainstream music but the past years the Grammys will always include works from niche and independent artists. If you would see the nominees for the major categories you would see that all of them had great commercial success the past year and were had great performances on music charts. Anyway, this will be an interesting competition. For the full list of nominees visit: http://www.grammy.com/grammy_Awards/52nd_show/list.aspx

Anyway, I'll post the nominees for the major categories plus some random thoughts after it.

Record of the Year

• "Halo" – Beyoncé
• "I Gotta Feeling" – Black Eyed Peas
• "Use Somebody" – Kings of Leon
• "Poker Face" – Lady GaGa
• "You Belong With Me" – Taylor Swift

Album of the Year

• I Am... Sasha Fierce – Beyoncé
• The E.N.D. – Black Eyed Peas
• The Fame – Lady GaGa
• Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King – Dave Matthews Band
• Fearless – Taylor Swift

Song of the Year

• "Poker Face" – Lady GaGa
• "Pretty Wings" – Maxwell
• "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" – Beyoncé
• "Use Somebody" – Kings of Leon
• "You Belong With Me" – Taylor Swift

Best New Artist

• Zac Brown Band
• Keri Hilson
• MGMT
• Silversun Pickups
• The Ting Tings

* I'm pleasantly surprised The Ting Tings got a nod for Best New Artist. Well, with Lady GaGa not eligible that award is up for grabs. and I guess that pave the way for The Ting Tings to squeeze in the magic five. I want them to win but that's a long shot, I'm think Zac Brown Band or Keri Hilson will get the award

*I'm hoping for a win for Use Somebody in Song of the Year, Dave Matthews Band's Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King for Album of the Year and Poker Face for Record of the Year.

*Grammy surprises: 0 nods for comeback diva Whitney Houston and no major nods for Green Day and U2. The aforementioned got nods for the rock categories. I'm disappointed 21 Guns by Green Day failed to bag a nod in the major awards, I was hoping that song will get a nod for Song of The Year. U2 won tons of Grammys already and I guess they have to sit this out for a moment.

*Kelly Clarkson failing to get a nod for Pop Female Vocal for the song Already Gone is truly disappointing as that song Kelly's vocal and interpretation of the song was really good. At least her album got the nod for Pop Vocal Album

*Another pleasant surprise for me: The duet of Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat "Lucky" got a nod for Pop collaboration . Mraz also got a nod for Male Pop Vocal for "Make it Mine". Mraz has yet to won a Grammy, I thought last year he had the great chance with "I'm Yours" but sadly he lost. I hope this time he wins one of the two. He deserves it

*Stephen Colbert nominated again in the Grammys again for Best Comedy Album. I hope he wins just to see how he will gloat on the show haha.

*The Vampire pop culture craze is present in the Grammys too as the soundtracks for True Blood and Twilight for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album. But Slumdog Millionaire is there also so that will easily win the award. The Climb and Decode are also nominated for the Best Song from a Motion Picture but with Oscar winner "Jai Ho" (not the PCD version) and Golden Globe winner "The Wrestler" both songs have no chance at all to win the award.

*Coldplay's Life in Technicolor II nominated for Best Short Form Music Video. I love that video, hope it wins. It was for me the most creative video I've seen the past year.

*Aside from Grammy veterans Kelly and Carrie, the only other AI alum that got a nod was Season 5 10th placer Mandisa for Pop/Contemporary Gospel album.

*Taylor Swift choices are good as You Belong With Me was campaigned for Pop and White Horse for Country. I'm hoping White Horse bags the Best Country song.

*Really good year for Beyonce, her alter ego concept album was a success. I think she is already a lock for the win for the R&B categories but for the major awards, it will be tough.

*The Best Dance Recording is also filled with chart hits, usually there will club hits or lesser know songs in the mix but for this year this isn't the case. The nominees are Black Eyed Peas with Boom Boom Pow, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland's When Love Takes Over, Lady GaGa's Poker Face, Britney Spears' Womanizer and Madonna's Celebration

*I honestly think that the VMAs cost Kanye West the nominations for the major categories. Heartless was very deserving to be in the Song and Record of the Year nods. But I guess that's the price he has to pay for being a douchebag.

* The Alternative Album category is very competitive as well, I want Yeah Yeah Yeahs to win but Phoenix has the momentum and critical support right and they might win this and they truly deserve it anyway.

*Eminem's comeback was underwhelming but I would like to see him win Best Rap Performance for the song Beautiful which for me is on par with his best song Lose Yourself

The Choice

Yesterday was the last day of filing of Certificate of Candidacy for aspiring public servants (yeah right haha okay I'll be positive) for the May 2010 elections. Although, I admit the in general politics disgusts me with the mudslinging, several stories of corruption and incompetence but on some level I'm quite excited. This is my second time to vote and my first time to vote for a president. For now, I don't have my choice yet for president but one thing's for sure I will note for Erap for crying out loud. Yeah, GMA sucked but it does not vindicate Erap at all. Anyway, some people asks me why should they vote given the current political climate. My answer is simple, not voting by choice means that you are giving hope for the country. No matte how difficult it seems, we should never lose hope.

It's December!

And the last month of 2009 starts now! It's my favorite time of the year. Although I do admit that the excitement I feel is not as lively as when I was a child. Oh well, that's normal I guess especially in the current atmosphere, it's just different. But two years ago I made a promise that I will enjoy this season no matter what. It will start on me. Christmas will be a great time because I will make it so. To jumpstart the season,I will share my favorite contemporary Christmas song "Believe" by Josh Groban. I just love the what the song says. I love this part, it got me the first time I listened to this song

We were dreamers not so long ago.
But one by one we all had to grow up.

When it seems the magic slipped away,
we find it all again on Christmas day...

Today's Thoughts in 5-7-5

Yeah, Erap will run
Candidacy filed today
Damn, it's official!

Gloria decided
She'll run this time in congress
My say? No shame right?

Oh my Philippines
What the heck is happening?
We deserve better

Excuse my attempt
In expressing what I think
In form of Haiku

First Time

Today I receive my first ever Christmas bonus! It's not that much since I've been just in the company for five months but nevertheless I really felt to receive it. I was planning to share a portion it to my parents but they said I could keep it, well, I just shared a portion to my one-year old nephew of course through her mother, my sister, she will deposit it on my nephew's bank account. I also gave a portion to my cousin who has been living with us for the past 6 months taking care of my nephew and helping my mother with household chorse and sometimes my sister with her business. She was a great help to us and this my way to show my thanks. What will I do with the remaining money? A portion is already saved for my bank account and with what's left I'm planning to buy an MP4 player, not a flashy brand though 'coz I can't afford that. What's weird is that the MP4 Player I'm planning is actually for the purposes of my radio listening haha. Well, that player could record FM radio and well since I cover music charts and all, it would be a big help haha. I know radio geek still
Anyway, thank you Lord for the blessings. It really felt because as I've said before among the three jobs I had this one is the one I felt I was at home and well, useful and productive :)

Shocked

When I found out what happened at Maguindanao my jaw literally dropped. I can't believe it. It was a massacre. I've heard many times how intense the local politics is in the provinces but this was one was just unbelievable. Around 40 people were killed and some were raped, beheaded. This is the work of a monster. And it shocks that the root of this is political power struggle. There were also journalists who were caught in the middle and were murdered. My heart bleeds for the family of the victims. I hope justice will prevail. God bless their souls
