2011 Emmy Watch [Part 2]

Yesterday, I discussed my predictions for the acting categories for Drama series and today I'll dish out my bets on who will get the nominations for the Comedy series field on tomorrow's 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations announcement.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Jane Lynch (Glee) [FOX]
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) [ABC]
Julie Bowen (Modern Family) [ABC]
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) [NBC]
Betty White (Hot in Cleveland) [TV Land]
Kristin Wiig (Saturday Night Live) [NBC]

Last year's winner and this year's Emmy host Jane Lynch is definitely a lock for a nomination and so as the "Modern" Family ladies. Perennial nominees Krakowski and Wiig are safe bets to repeat this year especially Wiig who is poised to follow the footsteps of Fey and Poehler after the box office success of "Bridesmaids" raised her Hollywood profile. Betty White is a shoo-in for a nomination for her TV comeback via "Hot in Cleveland", she already won a surprise SAG award earlier this year for this role and the Emmy voters simply love Betty.

Wildcards:

Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory) [CBS]
Wendy Malick (Hot in Cleveland) [TV Land]

Bialik's character is basically a female Sheldon and she really hit it off not only with him but with the rest of the characters and added new layer to this show. Bialik's advantage is that most of her funny scenes are with Sheldon so there's a possibility that voters might notice her too. On the other hand, Malick is a respected sitcom veteran and she picked up a couple of Emmy nominations for her work on "Just Shoot Me. Betty White placed "Hot in Cleveland" in the awards map and Malick is the clear comedic standout on the show so if the Emmy voters would pour a lot of support for this show it's possible that there could be two "Hot in Cleveland" in the nominations.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Chris Colfer (Glee) [FOX]
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) [CBS]
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) [ABC]
Ty Burrell (Modern Family) [ABC]
Ed O'Neill (Modern Family) [ABC]
Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) [NBC]

Last year's surprise nominee Colfer is now considered a lock and the frontrunner for the win after winning the Golden Globe earlier this year and grabbing a SAG nod earlier. I personally wish all four Modern Family actors will be nominated but I think that's tough to do. Last year's there was an outcry when O'Neill got shut out so I think the voters will make it up to him this year (plus he got a SAG nod too). Stonestreet won last year so he's a safe bet to return and while the Golden Globes snubbed Burrell, he picked a SAG and TCA nods so he has solid chances. NPH is a consistent nominee (and loser) and I don't think that streak will end this year as "Barney" has strong episodes on HIMYM the past season. My "wild guess" prediction for is Nick Offerman because I believe NBC's aggressive campaign for "Parks and Recreation" will pay off and Offerman's breakthrough performance will be recognized.

Wildcards:

Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) [ABC]
Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) [CBS]

With Burrel, Stonestreet and O'Neill having stronger chances on getting nominations that leaves Jesse Tyler Ferguson who was a surprise but deserving nominee last year. I think he's the most vulnerable to be left out but then again he was already a nominee last year so there's a support so let's wait and see. I think after the debacle "Two and a Half Men" experienced this year it would also affect consistent nominee Jon Cryer's chances of getting another nod this year but he was the "surprise" winner two years ago beating the Emmy host that year and presumed winner Neil Patrick Harris so they loved him so we should never count him out.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Laura Linney (The Big C) [Showtime]
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) [Showtime]
Toni Colette (United States of Tara) [Showtime]
Tina Fey (30 Rock) [NBC]
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) [NBC]
Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly) [CBS]

The leading ladies of Showtime's pseudo-comedies will dominate the nomination circle. Showtime ladies already won the past two years with Collette and Falco and this year Linney will likely make it 3/3 for Showtime. Linney won all the Emmy nominations (three) she has received in her career so despite the SAG snub she's a lock for nod and possibly a win. Previous winner Fey will come back of course and Poehler was a surprise nominee last year and with a stronger season and Emmy campaign for "Parks and Recreation" this season she's a safe bet to return. My wild guess pick is Melissa McCarthy since she will announce the nominations tomorrow with Joshua Jackson from "Fringe" which is a good indicator for a possible nomination. For the past years, at least one of the announcers gets nominated and Jackson ha no chance at all to be nominated for "Fringe" (with such a competitive category in drama and the voters not too fond of sci-fi shows in general) so that leaves McCarthy but of course it is still possible that this will be the year that no one from the announcers will get a nod. However, McCarthy had a breakout performance in the box-office smash "Bridesmaids" so that could her chances.

Wildcards:

Lea Michelle (Glee) [FOX]
Patricia Heaton (The Middle) [ABC]

I would actually placed Michelle in my predictions if not for McCarthy announcing the nominees, it's still highly possible that she'll get a second nod if McCarthy won't get a slot but I would be shocked if she would bump off any of the Showtime and NBC ladies. Meanwhile, I predicted Heaton to be nominated last year given her Emmy track record with "Everybody Loves Raymond" but she got lost in the shuffle. "The Middle" is still a show that is under the radar but it has been gaining steady critical support and has increased in viewers so there's still a chance that the voters will rekindle their love for Heaton.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) [CBS]
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) [NBC]
Steve Carell (The Office) [NBC]
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) [Showtime]
Joel McHale (Community) [NBC]
Louis C.K (Louie) [FX]

This is the exact opposite of the Lead Actor in a Drama Series where the competition is so stiff that I listed down 11 actors that has a real shot of a nomination, in the comedy field meanwhile the competition is light that there only three locks for nominations: Last year's winner Parsons, two-time winner Baldwin and perennial nominee but always a loser Carell. LeBlanc will likely take the 4th slot as he played a parody of himself in "Episodes" and that show is a "behind-the-scenes" sitcom which the Emmy voters like (see 30 Rock) so he's a safe bet. My other two picks are purely wild guesses because the last two (or maybe three) slots are up in the air. My first pick is Joel McHale, last year I predicted him too because he announced the nominees with Sofia Vergara but he got shut out so I think maybe the voters will make it up to him this year. My second 'wild guess' pick is Louis C.K, if only his show was on HBO or even Showtime I'm sure he would easily get a nod but his show is on FX which hasn't fared well on the comedy side of the Emmy awards. But Louis' performance is acclaimed and aside from acting on that show Louis C.K also writes, edits, and directs this show too and that kind of versatility usually impresses the voters. Plus it also helps that C.K is a previous nominee for writing various comedy shows/specials.

Wildcards:

Matthew Morrison (Glee) [Fox]
Rob Lowe (Parks and Recreation) [NBC]

The choices are so slim in this category that last year's nominee Glee's Matthew Morrison still has a shot for a nomination for a role that is not a funny nor remarkable. He was not even the lead male character of the past season (Chris Colfer's Kurt was). Speaking of, Lowe's submission as lead for "Parks and Recreation" is just silly as he is clearly a supporting character on that show but to his credit he really did well on the show and if my hunch that NBC's aggressive campaign for "Parks and Recreation" will pay off there's a great chance that Lowe will join the party.

Tomorrow I'll discuss my predictions on which shows will get in the "magic six" of the Comedy and Drama series nominations.

2011 Emmy Watch [Part 1]

The nominees for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be out this July 14 (early morning in the US while in the evening for us here in the Philippines) and and in lieu with that I've prepared a series of posts discussing my predictions on who will be nominated for the major categories. Please note that this is a list of who I think WILL be nominated and not who I WANT to be nominated. Let's start with the acting categories for a Drama series. Admittedly I haven't really watch a lot of drama shows the past season and I followed more comedies so my predictions is just basically based on buzz, predictions from "experts", voting trends in the past and threw out some wild guesses as well to shake things up. Anyway here are my predictions:

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) [CBS]
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife) [CBS]
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) [AMC]
Margo Martindale (Justified) [FX]
Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) [HBO]
Alfre Woodard (Memphis Beat) [TNT]

Archie Panjabi was a 'surprise' nominee and winner last year and with a better performance (and more critical acclaim) on the second season of "The Good Wife" there's no doubt that she's a lock for a second nomination. Co-star Baranski is a lock as well as she is a 'suki' of the Emmy awards even with less remarkable roles. Hendricks got in last year so it's a safe bet that she's returning plus she's from "Mad Men". Martindale is a veteran character actress who received high critical acclaim with her role in "Justified". Emmy voters do like to vote for veteran and respected actresses that they have probably worked with so it would be slightly shocking if Martindale misses out. MacDonald comes from an admired HBO period drama and she already received a Golden Globe nod here so she's also a safe bet for a nomination. Woodard is my 'wild guess' pick, she has 12 Emmy nominations and 4 wins so even if "Memphis Beat" is not an "it" show her name alone could bring herself to a possible 13th nomination

Wildcards

Sharon Gless (Burn Notice) [USA]
Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy) [ABC]

No one was predicting that veteran actress Gless will be nominated last year but when her name was called people suddenly remembered that she's an Emmy favorite and that it was wrong to count her out. I'm not predicting Gless this year although she is still a likely nominee mainly because I think Woodard would get her slot. Meanwhile, Oh was nominated (but never won) ever since "Grey's Anatomy" debuted until last year when she was a surprise snub (along with co-star and perennial nominee Chandra Wilson). There's a chance that the voters forgot about her and the show for good but Oh had a great season that showcased Oh's acting skills. If the voters watched those episodes, she could get back in the game.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Allan Cumming (The Good Wife) [CBS]
Josh Charles (The Good Wife) [CBS]
John Slattery (Mad Men) [AMC]
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) [TNT]
Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) [HBO]
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) [HBO]

No Lost and Breaking Bad actors this year so this category at least has room for 3 new faces to get inside the nomination circle. Cumming got a guest actor nod last year for this role and now that he moved to series regular he will definitely get a nod this year. Slattery is a staple in this category so no way he'll be snubbed this year with lighter competition this time around. Braugher is an Emmy favorite, he already got noticed last year even if the show was barely watched so I have no doubts he will get a nod this year too. Pitt got nods in the Golden Globes and SAG so he'll definitely be "Boardwalk Empire's" representative here. I think one between Josh Charles and Chris Noth will get a nomination this year for "The Good Wife" but I'm betting on Charles who had more screen time and shared standout moments with Juliana Marguilles this year. And lastly, I just feel like "Game of Thrones" gained a lot of momentum during the nomination period and Dinklage will get noticed as he is the breakout character on the show.

Wildcards

Walton Goggins (Justified) [FX]
Chris Noth (The Good Wife) [CBS]

If the voters warmed up with "Justified" then it's a safe bet that Goggins will be noticed with his flashy role and acclaimed performance from the show's well-received second season. Like what I said earlier, I think one between Charles and Noth would get a nod so maybe it will come down it the voters are Team Peter or Team Will haha!

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Juliana Marguiles (The Good Wife) [CBS]
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) [AMC]
Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU) [NBC]
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) [TNT]
Kathy Bates (Harry's Law) [NBC]
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) [NBC/DirecTV]

Sedgwick is a perennial nominee and pulled an upset against frontrunner Marguiles last year and with "The Closer" ending its run soon there's not doubt she'll be back. Critics are pitting Marguiles against Moss for the award this year as they both had strong seasons with their respective shows so both are locks for nod. Hargitay will go for her 8th consecutive nomination while Britton will possibly get her second and last nod for "Friday Night Lights" although she's vulnerable as well with new challengers emerging but I think she still has the upper hand thanks to aggressive campaigning. With "Damages" not airing new episodes last season, Glenn Close is out of the running and I think Oscar winner (but Emmy loser) Kathy Bates will take her spot.

Wildcards

Melissa Leo (Treme) [HBO]
Dana Delany (Body of Proof) [ABC]
Emmy Rossum (Shameless) [Showtime]

Leo just won an Oscar this year so there's a chance that the love will be extended here at the Emmy awards for her barely-watched drama. Delany is a former winner who starred in a popular broadcast drama that showcased her great acting skills so she shouldn't be counted out. Lastly, Rossum is a young face from well-received performance from a Showtime show and voters has a thing with Showtime leading ladies although it was more on the comedy side so maybe Rossum will be the first lady from Showtime to crack the drama field.

Justify Full
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Jon Hamm (Mad Men) [AMC]
Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) [HBO]
Hugh Laurie (House) [FOX]
Michael C. Hall (Dexter) [Showtime]
William H. Macy (Shameless) [Showtime]
Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) [Showtime]

This a very competitive category and I'm glad current champ and three-time winner Bryan Cranston is not eligible this year (since "Breaking Bad" didn't air new episodes during the eligibility period) because it makes this year's race more exciting. To be honest, Hamm is the only one perennial nominee that I believe is a lock for another nomination because while I think Laurie and Hall are still strong bets for nominations the competition is just too stiff that they could be vulnerable. Buscemi already won the Golden Globe and SAG for this role so he is a lock for a nomination and I think he's the frontrunner for the win. Macy has nine Emmy nominations and two wins in the past and it does not hurt that his role in "Shameless" is flashy thus improving his chances of scoring a nod. Aside from being a two-time Emmy winner, "The Borgias'" leading man Jeremy Irons also won an Oscar and a Tony, so yeah he has the acting pedigree that would be too hard for the Emmy voters to ignore.

Wildcards

Timothy Olyphant (Justified) [Showtime]
Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) [HBO]
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) [NBC/DirectTV]
Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods) [CBS]
Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) [HBO]

"Justified" was well-received on it's second season and Olyphant got a lot of rave reviews for his role so if Margo Martindale will be nominated in the supporting actress category she could help Olyphant's chances as well. Chandler got a surprising but deserving first nomination last year but I think he is vulnerable for a snub this year even if their Emmy campaign for the final season of "Friday Night Lights" was aggressive mainly because of the competition. And we should never count out Byrne who already received two nods for this role and was only absent last year because "In Treatment" didn't air new episodes that time. If my hunch that "Game of Thrones" gained momentum during the voting period is right then lead actor Sean Bean has a shot. And lastly, never count out veteran and well-loved actor (especially the older crowd which comprises a good share of the Emmy voters) Tom Selleck for "Blue Bloods". This category is just way too competitive, with so many actors that have real chances of getting a nomination.

Billboard Hot 100 (July 16, 2011)

LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" jumps #3-#1 this week unseating Pitbull's "Give Me Everything Tonight" after just a week on top of the chart. This is LMFAO's biggest hit by far as their previously highest rated track was their first single "I'm in a Miami Bitch" which peaked at #51 in 2008. Lauren Bennet is featured on "Party Rock Anthem" she was previously a member of the girl group "Paradiso Girls" which released the song "Patron Tequila" which was a modest hit in the Philippines but a flop in the U.S. "Party Rock Anthem" is #1 song in digital sales and rising in airplay and looks like it will have a lengthy stay on top the chart (unless Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" could dethrone it but for now the single stays at #4 for the third straight week).

Two pop-rock group advances in the Top 10 this week, first is OneRepublic's 'Good Life' leaps #18-#9 to become the band's 2nd Top 10 hit after the 2007 smash "Apologize" and newbie Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight, Tonight" advances #13-#10 this week. Last week, Maroon Five debuted at #8 with "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera) so that makes it three pop-rock groups (or at least guitar groups if you don't classify them as pop-rock) to make it to the top 10 as oppose to last year where Train's "Hey Soul Sister' was the only song from a pop-rock that made it to the Top 10.

Longest chart sitter "F**k You (Forget You)" by Cee Lo Green drops #35-#40 this week on its 45th week on the chart.

Review: Amigo

I was browsing Click The City when I noticed a film called Amigo opening this week. I never heard about it before and frankly I thought this one of those local gay “sexy” movies masquerading as ‘indie films’ that always randomly pops up at Click The City's movie listings which resident critic Philbert Dy always reviews*

*I love reading Philbert's reviews but I find it bizarre that he would take the effort to review those movies comprehensively but I do get a kick out of reading those especially the way he points out its flaws and the lack of effort from the producers to make their movies decent.

To my surprise, Amigo is a historical film which stars respected Filipino actors Joel Torre, Rio Locsin, Ronnie Lazarro, Bembol Rocco, John Arcilla, Irma Adlawan and foreign actors that include Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation) and Garret Dillahunt (TV's Raising Hope). Upon reading the film's synopsis, Amigo got my interest immediately plus it's quite rare these days to see a film in this genre in a semi-wide release and shown on major cinemas in Metro Manila and some provinces**. At first I thought the film was a local production since it has local stars after all and was shot in Bohol but it's actually an American film written and directed by Oscar nominee John Sayles (but there are local production crews as well). That fact escalated my interest even more so I immediately watched the movie on its opening day (July 6) and I can proudly say that it was worth the money and I really hope more people can catch it (it will just have a limited one week run).

In a nutshell, Amigo tells the story of how San Isidro, a small barrio in the Philippines, was caught in the middle during the almost forgotten Philippine-American war that happened at the turn of the 20th century when Spain relinquished their hold of the Philippines to the Americans. Admittedly, I’m not a history expert nor was I a good student back then when I studied it but I do recall that this period of time in the country’s history was barely discussed in school so the fact that this movie tells this largely unheard story is commendable.

Joel Torre plays Rafael, the cabeza or the town mayor who is conflicted on how he could keep his town safe while at the same time cooperating with the Americans and dealing with the local rebels (which his brother and son are part of) that also demands his loyalty. Torre is just magnificent and definitely carries the film all throughout. All the supporting characters, both Filipino and foreign, did a solid job. They could have given more but the film has a lot of characters that they simply didn’t have the time to flesh out the characters even more.

The film can sometimes feel like, unsurprisingly, a history lecture but it was presented in a way that will draw your attention completely. The characters and the town of San Isidro are charming and so raw that you would actually feel what it feels like to live there during that time. You could see how carefully constructed this film is with thorough research and keen attention to detail. I know that people often associate ‘history” to ‘boring” but I assure you that Amigo isn’t.

I appreciate the film’s attempt to show all sides of the conflict from the ordinary townsfolk to the Americans to the local rebels and even the Spaniards and (for a brief time) the Chinese. The audience will understand or at least learn where all the conflicting camps are coming from and why they make certain decisions.

Doing films about a war is quite difficult to do because it will always illicit reactions that there could be bias and propaganda involved but Amigo simply tells a story of people who are victims of circumstances and further solidifies the statement that in war, no one will ever truly win.

Billboard Hot 100 (July 9, 2011)

After 7 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" finally steps as Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" replaces her on top of the chart. With Pitbull and company rising to the top it ends the 19-week reign of solo female artists atop the Billboard Hot 100. Lady GaGa's 'Born This Way" started it with 6 weeks at #1 followed by Katy Perry's "E.T." with 5 weeks at #1, Rihanna and Britney's "S&M (Remix)" with one week and of course Adele with 7 weeks for Rolling in the Deep.

"Give Me Everything" gives Pitbull first ever #1 on the chart, his previous best was 'I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" which peaked at #2 in 2009. This is likewise the first #1 for featured artists Nayer and Afrojack but the second #1 for Ne-Yo after his debut single "So Sick" topped the chart in 2006.

Maroon Five's "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera") debuts at #8 on the heels of the song's performance on the recently concluded 'The Voice" which featured Maroon Five frontman Adam Levine as a mentro along with Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green. "Moves Like Jagger" is the band's first Top 10 after their #1 hit "Makes Me Wonder" ruled the chart for 3 weeks in 2007. This is Christina Aguilera's first top 10 since "Keeps Getting Better" debuted and peaked at #7 in 2008.

Meanwhile, fellow The Voice mentor Blake Shelton rised to #15 with "Honey Bee" and has a real shot on beating its peak position at #13 which it obtained during it's first week on the chart where it was boosted by good initial sales. On the other hand, Cee Lo Green's "F*ck You (Forget You)" is now the longest chart sitter with 44 weeks on the chart after Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"finally exits the chart this week after 48 weeks.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Midyear Musings (Midweek Musings 15)

The first half of 2011 is almost over and I know I've been saying this since time immemorial but 'time really flies' and I really can't believe we're already on the halfway mark already. The past 6 months have been very interesting to say the least. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, both personally and professionally. But I learned a lot and I admit I'm still in the process of transitioning to adulthood. Oh yes that word "adulthood", it's only this year that I realized (and accepted) that I am really an adult now. All they have said about the "real world" is so true and I really have a new found appreciation of my life before as a teen. Sometimes I admit I love to reminisce because the present is too tough and the future is so uncertain the relieving the past gives a warm feeling to my heart. I know all people go through to this phase and I'm glad I was raised well to handle this kind of stuff. I'm not saying I'm a brave young adult now, like I said I'm still in the process. And I know this is just the start of more challenges to come but I'm ready. There will be times I will feel like breaking down or giving up but it's just normal and what's important is how you will face whatever life throws at you. aI will do my best to handle all the hurdles that comes along in the best way possible. I am at a point of my life where decision making is so essential that having a strong sense of self is important. I don't know if I'm placing the right words to fully explain what I'm feeling right now so pardon me if what I'm saying is just running in circles. Anyway, with those issues haha I just wanna thank God for guiding me, I also had some struggles spiritually I admit but I'm over it and my faith is stronger than ever :)

Spotlight: Transformers: Dark of The Moon

Last night I was invited by Pinoyexchange to watch Solar Entertainment's press screening of Transformers: Dark of the Moon at IMAX, SM Mall of Asia. Truth be told, it was my first to watch a movie in 3D since I always resisted watching movies in that form because it's expensive haha! So I'm glad my 3D movie experiencing is for free! Anyway, here's my review of the movie which can also be seen at the Movies subforum of Pinoyexchange.com

Michael Bay has already said that Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the last of the movie franchise (of course there’s still a possibility of a reboot or another sequel in the future with another director at helm) and while this trilogy (intended or not) is not a well constructed one as a whole, the third Transformers movie served as a fitting end to the franchise.

Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) struggles in his transition to adulthood and has been longing for the days when he felt that he mattered. After helping save the world twice, Sam feels like a total loser as he had difficulty landing jobs after graduating from college and what’s worse, his new girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) is basically supporting him. He finds a job later on which is somewhat degrading but this job led him to discover the brewing conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons which will endanger the lives of the human race.

The movie takes on an alternate history which involves the 1969 NASA moon landing and the way they told that story is contrived (the alternate history its trying to tell is muddled as well) but it’s serviceable. In Transformers: Dark of the Moon the Autobots and the Decepticons take center stage, yes Sam is still a prominent character but this time around the robots are not just there to deliver those action sequences but their characters in this movie have more substance and has purpose. And this not limited only to Optimus Prime and Bumblebee as almost every robot (even the little ones) left a strong impression. The Decepticons were nastier and scarier too.

LaBeouf did fine as Sam transitions from awkward teen to a mature young man. Sam still has those annoying childlike qualities (his screams for example) but he steps up in this movie and is not just an accidental hero who was only trapped by circumstance. Megan Fox’s replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley did okay, unless you are easily distracted with her accent and her lips then she shouldn’t be a bother. You could still somehow feel that Carly is really just Mikaela with the way her relationship with Sam is developed plus how Bay treated her character (despite being in the middle of an apocalyptic battle she’s still clean and gorgeous and she was running and getting thrown while wearing high heels at that). I didn’t like the movie’s attempt for humor though as it was unnecessary and was just simply annoying. Ken Jeong’s character was a great example to that, the character has a real purpose but choosing to play the character with toilet humor diminishes his credibility.

The action scenes and visual effects are good and there are a lot of insane sequences here which translated well on screen. However, there were really a lot of things going on that you could easily lose track on what’s happening already. And while the action sequences are fun to watch it was dragged on too long and could have been tightened even more like lessen the use of the slow-mos and better pacing. It’s a hot mess.

Overall, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is an entertaining ride, it has a great but not perfectly polished visuals but this time around it has a story that is functional that drives the story to a point with more dynamic characters carrying the movie. 7 /10

Billboard Hot 100 (July 2, 2011)

Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep" streak continues as it spends a 7th consecutive week atop the Billboard Hot 100 and is now the longest running #1 song for 2011 beating Lady GaGa's "Born This Way" which logged 6 weeks at #1 earlier this year.

Katy Perry is on track to get her 5th consecutive #1 as her 5th single from her sophomore album "Last Friday Night" zooms #31 to #4 this week. She previously topped the Hot 100 with "California Girls" (6 weeks), "Teenage Dream" (2 weeks), "Firework" (4 weeks) and "E.T" (5 weeks) all from the same album. If she manages to get "Last Friday Night" to #1 she will only be the second artist to be able to send 5 songs from 1 album to #1 after Michael Jackson did it in the 80s with his album "Bad" which spawned the hits "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man In The Mirror" and "Dirty Diana.

This week's top debut comes from Bad Meets Evil, a side project of Eminem which teams him up with former D12 member Royce da 5'9". Their single 'Lighters" which features Bruno Mars lands at #16 which makes Bruno Mars 6th Top 20 Hit which is equally divided with his three singles as lead artists and three singles as featured artist.

Selena Gomez and The Scene's "Who Says" jumps #27-#22 on its 14th week on the chart. This is Selena's highest charting single of her career on the Hot 100.

The longest chart sitter is still Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"which hangs on for another week on the chart at #48 on its 48th week on the chart. It could drop on the chart next week and go recurrent. Let's wait and see

Next week watch out for Maroon Five's new song "Moves Like Jagger" which features Christina Aguilera to make a big splash on the chart next week as the song is currently the #1 song on US iTunes on the heels of a live performance of that song on the new hit American reality-singing competition "The Voice" where Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera are mentors.
