Review: Contagion

Last night (September 8) I attended Contagion's press screening at SM Mall of Asia IMAX theater for Pinoyexchange. Below is my Contagion review for Pinoyexchange's Official Movie Reviews.

Contagion has a star-studded cast, but there are no heroes and villains among them and no character is treated above one another. The film’s true star is the story itself. You would be surprise that for a major Hollywood production Contagion chose to go to a different route in its narrative. The route might not be appealing to a regular moviegoer but it’s nevertheless effective in sending its message across.

Returning home from a business trip in Hongkong, Beth (Gwyneth Paltrow) got sick and was rushed to the hospital. What they initially thought was a simple flu ended badly. What’s worse the doctor could not explain to Beth’s husband Mitch (Matt Damon) what illness infected her. But Beth’s case was only the beginning as the contagion quickly spreads across borders creating a global pandemic.

The movie jumps from storyline to storyline as it contains several subplots, Dr. Chever (Laurence Fishburne), the director of the disease control prevention group, tries to allay the growing worldwide panic; Dr. Erin (Kate Winslet) risks her life to study and understand the illness; Dr. Leonora (Marion Cotillard), a World Health Organization officer, attempts to trace the source of the deadly infection; Alan (Jude Law) is an activist who dishes out via his widely-visited blog that a conspiracy between the authorities and the pharmaceutical companies is behind the so-called pandemic and Dr. Ally (Jennifer Ehle) races against time to formulate a vaccine to prevent the virus to spread out and kill more people.

Contagion is not exactly a thriller but the film elicits fear from its viewers because the manner the story is presented is so matter-of-fact that you would actually think that the events unfolding in the movie could possibly happen in real life. The director skillfully presented the process of virus transmission and how it easily passes on from one person to another. It was so effective that it wouldn’t be surprising that after watching this movie you would freak out when someone coughs near you, feel hesitant to touch stuff in public transportation or even avoid shaking hands completely.

The film’s structure might leave some viewers a little bored, the pacing is slow and contains a lot of medical jargon in the dialogues, but the film perfectly captured an atmosphere filled with intense tension and paranoia. The production values of this film is very impressive, they were able to illustrate a world facing an international medical and societal crisis convincingly.

The cast, including the lesser known actors, did a great job as they each give a solid and compelling performance for their respective characters. This is a good example of how a movie should utilize a large ensemble by giving each actor substantial storyline. However, due to the movie’s several subplots there are stories that got lost like Cotillard’s Leonora in which the character practically disappeared in the middle part although her story’s conclusion left a good impact.

The movie’s plot was too spread out that it’s quite difficult to wrap it up but the film still managed to conclude it in which the story comes in full circle. Contagion is not exactly entertaining per se but the film’s excellent direction and competent multi-layered story are more than enough reasons to watch this one. 9 / 10

"Contagion" spreads in Philippine cinemas today, September 9.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: September 17, 2011)

Adele's Someone Like You flies #19-#1 on this week's Billboard Hot 100 marking the British singer's second consecutive #1 after Rolling in the Deep ruled the chart for 7 weeks, the longest running #1 song this year so far. This is a remarkable feat in this day and age as slow songs struggle to reach the top 5 on the Hot 100, much less make it to #1. The "slow" songs that made atop the chart for the last couple of years were Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love (2008), Plain White Ts Hey There Delilah (2007) and Fergie's Big Girls Don't Cry (2007). But the last piano-driven ballad to top the chart was actually Elthon John's "Candle in the Wind" in 1997. Adele is also the first British solo female artist to have two #1 songs from the same album.

Someone Like You's rise to the top was fueled by its strong digital sales this week of 275K which was boosted by Adele's well-received live performance of the song at the recent MTV Video Music Awards. Speaking of music videos, Adele's second single does not have an official music video so this is the first track to top the Hot 100 without an official music video 2009 chart topper Crack a Bottle by rappers Eminem, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre

Last week's #1, Maroon Five's Moves Like Jagger (featuring Christina Aguilera) descends #1-#2 but with rising airplay the song could take back the top spot from Adele next week. The wildcard is Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks which stays at #3 this week, the song is neck-in-neck with Moves Like Jagger for the #2 spot on US iTunes and is also increasing its airplay.

Lady GaGa's You and I zooms #16-#6 this week marking the singer's 11th top 10 hit and so far all of Lady GaGa's official singles went all top 10 with Judas as the lowest peaking at #10 (it debuted at that position).

It seems like Bad Meet Evil's Lighters finally peaked it drops from #4 to #7 this week. The song is already declining in sales while airplay growth has stalled, if the song would not turn things around this will be Bruno Mars' 3rd #4 peaking track, the first two were Travie McCoy's Billionaire and the other one was his own The Lazy Song. Mars also has three #1s with Just The Way You Are, Grenade and his first #1 B.o.B's Nothin' on You. So far all of Bruno Mars top 10 hits is either a #1 or #4 song.

Cobra Starship scores their second top 10 hit as their dance track You Make Me Feel Good (featuring Sabi) Good flies #18-#8 this week. Their first Top 10 hit was Good Girls Go Bad which peaked at #7 in 2009. That track also features Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester.

I spoke to soon when I said last week that along side Adele's and Lady Gaga's new tracks. Rihanna's Cheers is guaranteed to enter the top 10 this week but well I was wrong as the song stays put at #11 this week. Blocking Rihanna was Katy Perry's Last Friday Night which drops #5 to #10. The Katy Perry track is dropping quite fast considering it topped the chart not too long ago but nevertheless Perry extends her top 10 streak to 69 wees but with no new single in sight it looks like Perry's streak will end next week.

Two new entries bows inside the top 20 Lil Wayne's Mirrors featuring Bruno Mars enters the chart at #16 and Beyonce's Love on Top debuts at #20. The latter track is not an official single from Beyonce (at least not yet) but it was performed during the MTV VMAs. The track already surpassed the peak position of Run The World which stalled at #29 but fell short with the second single Best Thing I Never Had's peak at #16. Will this be the first time that Beyonce fails to score a top 10 hit from an album? It's too early to tell but despite the lack of major hits Beyoce's album "4" is selling quite well. The last time Beyonce was in the top was from last year "Telephone", a Lady GaGa song where she was featured, that song peaked at #3.

The longest chart sitter, The Band Perry's If I Die Young slides #15-#19 on its 41st week. Looks like the track will not surpass its #14 peak much less enter the top 10.

Brides vs Zombies

First of all, I'm quite happy that it seems like both "Wedding Tayo, Wedding Hindi" and "Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington" are doing well in the box office. I watched both movies in cinemas packed with people and today (Wednesday), where new movies usually open here in the Philippines, both movies which opened last week are still showing on a lot of theaters nationwide. In Glorietta, the two movies are still shown separately (as oppose to sharing a screen which usually happens when there's a lot of new releases which is the case this week) and there's actually one more local movie out today ("Thelma") at the same mall. So that makes three local movies playing at the same time on a high-end mall where local movies are not the priority most of the time. Excluding MMFF of course, it's really rare for two local movies to open on the same week because they could cannibalize each other's audience but "Wedding Tayo" and 'Zombadings" both opened last week and while some people are pitting them against each other it's quite good to know that both are received well.

"Wedding Tayo, Wedding Hindi" tells the story of two cousins who are on opposing sides of their relationship. Precy (Eugene Domingo) wants to annul her marriage after she discovers that her husband lost all their savings to a pyramiding scam while Maribel (Toni Gonzaga) returns from Japan to marry her longtime sweetheart. Maribel's wedding woes is pretty much your standard "wedding-preparation hijinks" but Gonzaga played the character quite well and delivered her wacky lines with ease and good comedic timing. Meanwhile, Precy's story about breaking up legally is quite interesting as it discusses annulment with a little educational context although the injection of humor for that part was hit and miss. Domingo's performance is good and she never fails to bring the laughs even with obvious jokes and all, although admittedly the performance is not remarkable compared with her previous roles. However, Gonzaga and Domingo have good chemistry together and the screen lights up whenever they have scenes together and exchanging lines. As expected, the movie goes to a predictable route although for a second I thought they will try to shake things up* but alas they backed away and settled for the usual ending. My one big complaint about this movie is the sloppy technical side (abrupt editing that cuts lines off and lighting shifts from bright to the dark on the same scene!) which for me is unforgivable since this movie is from the biggest movie outfit in the country. All in all, "Wedding Tayo, Wedding Hindi" is an enjoyable Pinoy popcorn flick. 7 / 10

*[SPOILER ALERT] with Maribel calling off the wedding after Precy gives her marriage another shot

On the other hand, "Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington" is about Remington (Mart Escudero) who was given a curse when he was a child by a gay man (Roderick Paulate) whom he mocked for being well, gay. Several years later, the curse is haunting Remington and he is slowly turning to someone he does not want to be. What's worse, being gay is quite dangerous in the town he lives in where there's a serial killer gunning down gays one by one.

I have to admit that I had high expectations of the movie because of the hype and strong reviews (particularly Click The City's critic Philbert Dy who gave this a rare 5-star review) so I was underwhelmed after watching it. Don't get me wrong I liked this movie but it has story issues that dragged it down. It's really a fun movie which gives an absurd but somehow poignant look of how gays live in the Philippine setting. However, the movie tried to tell a lot of stories but they didn't have something that would connect all the dots. The third act featuring the zombadings was a hot mess. There were funny moments of course but that is where the movie lost it focus. I know 'Zombadings" is a catchy title and is probably one of the reasons why it garnered a lot of interest but truth be told the gay zombies are a nuisance. The way they were tacked into the story was so contrived it as if that they were just injected to simply justify the title. They disrupted the flow of the story and they're not even that much of the threat to what is at stake. The movie is campy with it's tongue-in-cheek humor but the movie still managed introduced imaginative ways to tell the story so it was really disappointing how hackneyed the third act was.

Mart Escudero's performance is what you truly call a breakout performance. The guy has been around in showbiz for awhile, changing channels here and there, but never truly ever making a mark but this movie will turn things around for him as he showcased impressive versatility. His performance is very convincing, he pulled off a flamboyant character without making it cartoonish. And his shift to being a straight man is flawless as well. Lauren Young should work on her Filipino speaking skills as she has the acting chops but she is clearly not comfortable speaking the language which is distracting to watch. However, Young was particularly great when she was talking to Remington on why he shouldn't simply accept his fate that easily. Roderick Paulate has been playing gay roles since time immemorial but he always hits it out of the park and Eugene Domingo's role is more of a glorified cameo but she makes her short scenes shine. The rest of the cast did okay save for Remington's buddies who were flat with their delivery of their lines.

I have to commend "Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington" for its aggressive marketing campaign. It's really impressive especially coming from a new and independent movie outfit. They really promoted the hell out of this one and I'm glad it paid off as you can see the passion of the people behind this project. Despite my issues with the story, Zombadings is still one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking local movies to graced local screens in awhile. 8 / 10

Spotlight: Thelma

This indie movie will be distributed by Star Cinema on September 7, 2011 and the trailer got my interest. The story seems compelling and Maja Salvador looks great on the role. I'm glad a movie like this is getting major theaters release, I will definitely see it. Check out the trailer below

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: September 10, 2011)

Maroon Five and Christina Aguilera scores their 2nd and 5th #1 hit respectively as Moves Like Jagger ascends #4-#1 this week on the Billboard Hot 100 dethroning Katy Perry's Last Friday Night which drops to #5 this week. The song debuted at #8 in July in the wake of its premiere on the US talent show "The Voice" where Maroon Five frontman Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera are mentors but after a strong start the song dropped as low as #63 but thanks to an increased in airplay plus TV performances of the song (notably America's Got Talent) Moves Like Jagger rebounded on sales which ultimately catapulted this song to #1. Moves Like Jagger is also the first #1 coming from a band since Coldplay's Viva La Vida topped the chart in 2008.

Maroon Five had their first #1 single in 2007 with Makes Me Wonder which then broke the record for the longest jump to #1 when it jumped #64 to #1 (it was broken five times and the current record holder is Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You for its #97-#1 jump in 2009). Their breakout singles This Love and She Will Be Loved both peaked at #5 in 2004.

On the other hand, this is Christina Aguilera's 5th #1 single and her first since 2001's Lady Marmalade which was a collaboratio with Lil Kim, Mya and Pink for the movie "Moulin Rouge". This is also Aguilera's first top 5 hit since Beautiful peaked at #2 in 2002. Her first three #1 hits were all from her debut album: Genie in a Bottle, What a Girl Wants and Come on Over which hit #1 from 1999-2000.

Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks rises #7 to #3 which is very notable since this an alternative song from a new indie band and rock/alternative songs have struggled to reach the upper portions of the Hot 100. Is this the peak or will it go higher? Let's wait and see.

Adam Levine scored a double victory this week as he also lands a top 10 hit on his own this week as he is featured on the Gym Class Heroes track Stereo Hearts which rises #15-#10. Billboard notes that this is the first time in the Hot 100 history that someone have two songs in the top 10 at the same time as part of a band and a soloist.

Songs that will definitely enter the top 10 next week are Rihanna's Cheers (up #17-#11), Lady GaGa's You and I (up #35-#16) and Adele's Someone Like You (up #34-#19). The last two songs benefited from a live performance of the recent MTV Video Music Awards and notable Adele's song is currently on top of the US iTunes and has a strong shot of jumping all the way to #1 next week. Even if she doesn't the song will likely enter the top 3 which is pretty impressive for a ballad. Ballads haven't perform well on the Hot 100 recently and even red hot Rihanna failed as her solid California King Bed managed a #37 peak only this year (and the song drops out this week after 14 weeks on the chart).

The Band Perry's If I Die Young drops #14 to #15 this but marks its 40th week on the chart. The song's chart is slow but steady and I bet this song has a shot to come near or maybe match the all time longevity record of Jason Mraz's I'm Yours which stayed on the charts for 76 weeks.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Review: Bad Teacher

Everything that could make a good adult comedy is present in Bad Teacher: It has a relatable setting with an unapologetic premise and a game cast willing to go all out but unfortunately Bad Teacher fails to make the most out of it.

Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz) was off to marry a rich guy and live the luxurious life she has always wanted but her boyfriend called the wedding off and she reluctantly returns to her job as a middle school teacher. Elizabeth plans to spend this school year like she did the last time: Skating by with barely any effort at all. But things changed when a new rich teacher Scott (Justin Timberlake) arrives and Elizabeth believes that by getting a breast augmentation she would be able to attract him but the operation is expensive so Elizabeth will do all possible ways (regardless if it’s illegal) just to raise money for bigger boobs.

Elizabeth is not a misunderstood person who secretly loves to teach, she’s simply a self-absorb woman who pursed a teaching career because it’s the easiest thing for her to do while she waits to snatch a rich man to become a pampered wife. It’s an unpleasant character that’s hard to root for but Diaz nails the role as she played it in a delightfully devilish way that despite Elizabeth's meanness you won’t find yourself wanting to strangle her to death. It’s unfortunate that the screenplay was not able to match Diaz’s performance because the storyline failed to have that comedic connection. The movie was basically a showcase of bad behavior but it's witless in general. There were a lot of petty antics that involves toilet humor and sexual jokes that goes for the obvious. There's no effort at all to make it more dynamic.

The ensemble composed of a lot of good TV comedy actors like Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), Lucy Punch (The Class), Phyllis Smith (The Office), Thomas Lennon (Reno 911), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) and veteran characters actors John Michael Higgins and Molly Shannon were solid and they were able to bring energy to the tepid material they were given. On the other hand, Justin Timberlake could not escape the poorly written Scott who suffers from no solid characterization whatsoever. The movie actually build him up with a peculiar behavior but it never paid off because it as if the writers were confused as well on what to do with the character so they just left it off as it is, one big mess.

Bad Teacher is just like the main character: uninspired, lazy and is just coasting along. The movie wanted to bring outrageous “She didn’t do that!” sequences but the execution was stillborn that instead it just had “Yeah, she did that” moments. Bad Teacher tried to be edgy but it resorted to cheap tricks which mostly didn’t work and in turn made the movie hardly funny at all. 4 / 10
