- The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
- Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
- I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
- Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below

Unofficially Yours continues to lead the Philippine Box Office 2012 as the movie raked in 157 million PHP / $3,704,457 as of March 11. The movie already lost a lot of screens since there are 2 local movies that opened this week (Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang and My Kontrabida Girl) but I think the movie could still earn good enough to cross 160 million pesos but it's not assured yet. Anyway, the movie is miles ahead of the other movies on the chart but as the Hollywood Blockbuster season begins we could see movies that could topple it in the succeeding weeks.
The first large-scale Hollywood flick to enter this year is Disney's John Carter which debuts on the chart at #10 earning 34,976,041 PHP / $823,935 since its release last March 9. The movie faltered in the US Box office but in the country it did fine. The other new release is the Oscar-nominated movie Moneyball which like the previous "Oscar" movies didn't earn that much with only $49,958 / 2,120,717 PHP gross since its release last March 7. The movie is tough sell despite the presence of a major star Brad Pitt as the movie is about baseball and statistics (two things not exactly popular subject matter here for a movie) but I personally enjoyed it despite my lack of baseball knowledge. I'm grateful that it had the chance to be screened here unlike the other "Oscar" movies.
Moreover, only 6/9 Best Picture nominees were released here and only The Tree of Life was released in 2011. Last year 8 / 10 of the Best Picture nominees were shown here in commercial theaters . The Help initially had a screening date here but it was pulled out and went straight to video instead while Midnight in Paris was never shown here nor is it available on original video. Oscar winner The Artist could still be shown here maybe as an Ayala Cinemas Exclusive like last year's winner The King's Speech but that remains to be seen since the other nominated movies with bigger names attached struggled in the local box office so what more a black and white silent film? I'm personally hoping a local distributor picks it up and get a release here because I want to feel how is it like to watch a silent film on the big screen. Here's the box office performance of the Oscar-nominated movies:
- Hugo - 4,407,536 PHP / $103,206
- Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - 3,643,823 PHP / $85,838
- The Descendants - 3,166,812 PHP / $74,601
- Moneyball - 2,120,717 PHP / $49,958
- War Horse - 2,032,464 PHP / $47,879
- The Tree of Life - 841,947 / $19490
Elsewhere on the chart, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance surpasses Journey 2: The Mysterious Island to be the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year while The Vow moves up to 6th place placing Alvin and the Chipmunks 3: Chipwrecked down to #7. One for the Money earns enough to get out of last place and is now ahead of 5 movies.
The much anticipated movie adaptation of The Hunger Games opens on March 21 and I'm very excited to see how it fairs on the box office. It will be huge for sure but how huge is the questions ;)
