Philippine Box Office Roundup 5

Here's my 5th edition of my Philippine Box Office Roundup and you can read my previous recap here. And as always here are some notes with regards to my box office roundup:
  • The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
  • Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.

Four new movies were shown last week to middling results. Leading the pack is Star Cinema's Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang earning $478K/ 20 million PHP, good enough to land on the #15 spot and will likely surpass fellow Star Cinema movies A Mother's Story (24 million) and My Cactus Heart (23 million) to be the 2nd highest grossing local film this year (by a wide gap since the #1 movie so fat this year, UnOfficially Yours is far ahead with 157 million PHP). Another local flick made its debut, GMA Films' My Kontrabida Girl earned $156K / 6.7 million PHP good enough to beat Viva Films's Hitman which earned 5.7 million PHP during its entire theatrical run. The last GMA films movie The Road from November last year earned 36 million PHP.

Meanwhile, two family movies opened last week and looks like they cannibalize each other with so-so results. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax opened with $300k / $12.8 million PHP, a little low for an animated flick in 3D while a retelling of the Snow White fairy Mirror, Mirror only earned $150K / 6.4 million PHP, the lowest-grossing movie among the new releases.

Elsewhere on the chart, John Carter (which earlier this week made headlines when its studio, Disney, admitted that the they will lose $200 million due to the movie's high production budget and disappointing worldwide box office) jumped to 4th place this week earning $1.6 million / 69 million PHP and will surpass Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance next week but will likely stay in 4th place because The Hunger Games will open next week and I expect it to open huge. Let's see ;)

Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at the BoxOffice.com forums:
