17th Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations + Thoughts

The nominees for the 17th Screen Actors Guild Awards were released and there were some surprising choices. Like the Golden Globes the SAG prioritizes the film categories than TV, they don't have a supporting actors category so lead actors compete with supporting actors for one award. One good thing I love thought about SAG is that they have ensemble awards which honors the cast as a whole (everyone has a trophy, yay!). Here are the nominees and some thoughts

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
STEVE BUSCEMI / Nucky Thompson – “Boardwalk Empire” (HBO)
BRYAN CRANSTON / Walter White – “BREAKING BAD” (AMC)
MICHAEL C. HALL / Dexter Morgan – “DEXTER” (SHOWTIME)
JON HAMM / Don Draper – “Mad Men” (AMC)
HUGH LAURIE / Dr. Gregory House – “HOUSE” (FOX)

Competitive category, same set of nominees as with the Golden Globes and this could be the list for next year's Emmy awards too!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
GLENN CLOSE / Patty Hewes – “DAMAGES” (FX)
MARISKA HARGITAY / Det. Olivia Benson – “LAW & ORDER: Special Victims Unit” (NBC)
JULIANNA MARGULIES / Alicia Florrick – “The Good Wife” (CBS)
ELISABETH MOSS / Peggy Olson – “Mad Men” (AMC)
KYRA SEDGWICK / Dep. Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson – “The Closer” (TNT)

While the Golden Globes pulled some surprises with Piper Perabo and Katey Segal sneaking in, the SAG chose the proven names yet again

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
ALEC BALDWIN / Jack Donaghy – “30 Rock” (NBC)
TY BURRELL / Phil Dunphy – “Modern Family” (ABC)
STEVE CARELL / Michael Scott – “THE OFFICE” (NBC)
CHRIS COLFER / Kurt Hummel – “Glee” (FOX)
ED O’NEILL / Jay Pritchett – “Modern Family” (ABC)

I'm okay with Eric Stonestreet getting snubbed here just because Ed O'Neill finally getting some love for his fantastic work at Modern Family. So sad Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory was left out!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
EDIE FALCO / Jackie Peyton – “NURSE JACKIE” (Showtime)
TINA FEY / Liz Lemon – “30 Rock” (NBC)
JANE LYNCH / Sue Sylvester – “Glee” (FOX)
SOFIA VERGARA / Gloria Delgado-Pritchett – “Modern Family” (ABC)
BETTY WHITE / Elka Ostrovsky – “HOT IN CLEVELAND” (TV Land)

Surprised that The Big C's Laura Linney was snubbed here since she's a well loved actress on Hollywood . Very happy Sofia Vergara made the cut, in fact she's the only Modern Family actor to be nominated in the Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG! I actually forgot Betty White had a new sitcom this year! Good job SAG for reminding us and I guess the Golden Globes must be kicking themselves out for the Betty White oversight

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
The Closer (TNT)
Dexter (Showtime)
The Good Wife (CBS)
Mad Men (AMC)

Too bad the great ensemble from Lost was not nominated for one last time

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series

30 Rock (NBC)
Glee (FOX)
Hot In Cleveland (TV Land)
Modern Family (ABC)
The Office (NBC)

Hot In Cleveland was the surprise nominee while I would have picked other shows like The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother I'm not really upset with Hot in Cleveland nod because while the show overall is just mediocre it has a great cast that elevates their material. The past few seasons of The Office have been dissed by a lot of critics but the ensemble getting an another is truly well deserved because I consider the cast of The Office one of the strongest on TV, every character even the minor provides laughs and they have great chemistry. I really dunno what to expect once Steve Carell leaves the show this season. I'm rooting for Modern Family to win because I want the brilliant kid actors of the show be rewarded as well because they have no chance on getting individual nods at all with any major award show

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
JOHN GOODMAN / Neal Nicol – “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” (HBO)
AL PACINO / Jack Kevorkian – “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” (HBO)
DENNIS QUAID / Bill Clinton – “THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP” (HBO)
ÉDGAR RAMÍREZ / Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, aka ‘Carlos’ – “CARLOS” (Sundance Channel)
PATRICK STEWART / Macbeth – “MACBETH (GREAT PERFORMANCES)” (Thirteen/PBS)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
CLAIRE DANES / Temple Grandin – “TEMPLE GRANDIN” (HBO)
CATHERINE O’HARA / Aunt Ann – “TEMPLE GRANDIN” (HBO)
JULIA ORMOND / Eustacia Grandin – “TEMPLE GRANDIN” (HBO)
WINONA RYDER / Lois Wilson – “WHEN LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH: THE LOIS WILSON STORY” (CBS)
